A lot of bird photography grows out of simply taking a lot of photos. Not just of birds but of everything. You learn over time what makes a good photo and what sucks. I've been shooting for forty years, starting with a film camera and finally seeing digital cameras become standard and praising them. :) Watching KZbin vids also helps. Heh.

Hi Duade. Thanks for another great video. I recently acquired the rf100-500, and I'm using it with the R6. After using this combination for about a month, I have to say I'm pleased, but I honestly expected sharper images. I'm finding, after lots of experiments, that, unless I'm close enough for the bird to fill at least 1/4 of the frame, the image isn't tack sharp. (For a bird to fill 1/4 of the frame, one has to be very close.) I found the same to be true with the 100-400 II, but I expected this lens to be sharper. Also, in comparing my 100-500/R6 shots with those that came from my 100-400/5D IV, I'm finding that, even in bright sun, I’m shooting at super high ISO's with the 100-500/R6. In bright sun, if I bump the shutter speed up to 3200 in order to shoot birds in flight, the ISO (set on auto) usually goes to 6400. I was nowhere near that high with the same settings with the 100-400/5D Mk IV. In looking at the stats of your shots in this video, I notice the same great ISO difference between your 5D shots and your R6 shots. Now, the R6 does an amazing job at high ISO's, but still, I wonder why, given comparable light, identical shutter speeds and apertures, the R6/100-500 combo requires ISO's 2-3 times higher than with the 5D/100-400. Any thoughts?
@Duade3 жыл бұрын
G'day Daniel, they should be very similar at the same settings, there maybe 1/3 of a stop difference at most I would have thought due to T-stops and the different field of view. The noticeable difference would be if you are shooting at 5.6 aperture on the 100-400 and 7.1 on the 100-500. Generally, if shooting when the sun is out a SS of 3200, Aperture of 7.1 will result in an ISO between 800-1600. For an ISO of 6400 I would expect it to be cloudy and overcast. If it is cloudy then perhaps a SS of 1/2000 would help reduce the ISO. If you have both kits still it would be easy to set both cameras to manual and dial in the same settings and then check the exposure. They should be very similar. Cheers, Duade

Re your talk about KZbin I crave videos like yours. No extraneous jabbering & egotistical garbage. Most Aussie are pretty much to the point but finding them amongst the crud is a challenge. After this I’ll go see Jan’s vids cos he’s on the ball too. Richard Tatti’s ‘Nightscape Images’ channel is also excellent & he’s another Aussie. Have you fellas thought of creating a coalition of quality photography channels? Sort of like the old webring’s where likeminded content creators have links to each others channel’s? Thanks so much for quality content. I know you do it out of love of the art & it’s evident in what you produce.

What is the minimum focal length necessary for small birds
@Duade3 жыл бұрын
G'day, I would say 400mm is a minimum whilst 600mm+ is ideal. I used the 400 5.6 on a 7D for a number of years. Cheers, Duade 👍
@colmranger3 жыл бұрын
I love you too guys I think ye are a great combination. I have been following you both separately for a long time. I'm thinking of switching to Sony from Canon 7d mkii and Canon 400mm f5.6 prime (not enough focal length) to Sony 200-600mm, I'd love to see you try Sony, I like the toughness and durability of Canon Greetings from Ireland
@Duade3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Colm, I hope to try a Sony camera shortly. The 200-600 is a great lens for sure, you might find that you have less focal length moving to a full frame camera as your current kit gives you 640mm due to the APSC crop. If you get a large MP camera you will have the ability to crop. The R5 and 100-500 is another option, it does have a 1.6 crop mode if you want the bird bigger in the viewfinder. Cheers, Duade 👍
@Zx303 жыл бұрын
Hi Duande! I have an R5 and want to start bird Photography. Which of these three lenses would you recommend to new bird photographers? Canon 400 5.6 EF Canon 600 f11 RF Canon 800 f11 RF Thanks for your help. 😁
@Duade3 жыл бұрын
Alberto, the 800 f11 would be the most fun and will give you plenty of focal length to play with making it easier to get the birds large in the frame. The Minimum Focus Distance of 6m is a weakness but if you are not getting that close it is ok. I would likely get that lens and then save for the RF100-500 which would complement that lens well. The 400 5.6 is the better bird in flight lens and is faster if you have low or poor light. But 400mm on a Full Frame is a little short and the bird would be small in the frame. Good luck, Cheers, Duade
