As a professional feller , I specifically use the Stihl 2018 MS 201 C-EM pro model with a 12 inch bar.For more power, I turbo charge it with a mini Garrett turbo and run a K&N filter on the intake.Stock it comes with 2.41 bhp , however after the turbo @ 10PSI of boost I get 269HP and 420Nm of torque on the dyno. With this mod I can easily outperform the Stihl MS 880 Magnum that only gets 8 bhp. The little saw shreds right through 50 inch logs in an instant and yet it stays light and very maneuverable. Just stay with the 201 and mod it , its all you need.

I love my MS 180C. I can use either a 12'', 14'' or 16'' bar and chain. I use mine with a 14'' bar and chain. Plenty of power and very useful all around chainsaw. Always keep your chain sharp. That's the key to any saw you buy or use.

I bought my first saw back in April '95. I was new to chainsaws and decided on a Stihl 066 (the equivalent, I think, to today's ms661) I didn't want the 'daddy' saw (the 084, I think it was) for, like I say, I was just a novice and new to chainsaws. The 066 came with a 25" bar. If I want a bigger saw I simply put on my 30" bar, and if I want a smaller saw (like, for limbing or hedge cutting) then I revert back to 25".

What's wrong with less unnecessary pollution? People need firewood but that doesn't mean we shouldn't care at all about the world. Would you rather we just take all the cats off vehicles and just forget about trying to limit pollution? If guys cared even a little we wouldn't get so much BS from the EPA about diesels and modified hot rods too. I like them as much as the next guy but guys that just want to pollute as much as possible are ruining it for the guys like me who rely on a diesel to make a living, not drive around a lifted 1 ton rolling coal to impress trailer park princesses..

Just buy 2 or three. More is better. MS261 is a great all around saw. Handles up to a 24 inch bar; MS 310 -don’t know the current number. Work horse. Mine is 25 years old; MS361 great medium size saw 24” to 30” bar. MS 066. Last of the 066 before the 661 series. Second largest saw Stihl makes. I use 24” and 36” bars with very aggressive RS chain. I have not tried it but I think the 661 will run great with a 42” bar. I cut oak in Central Texas. Very hardwood.

I like the fact that he said they are easy to pull to get started. I have a bad shoulder and just can't yank those things like most of you can. But I wished he'd started a couple so we can see it. One other thing is I could never get my foot in the handle to hold it down to start it. I can't even remember which one I had but I sold it anyway to get rid of it. Wonder why they can't make them with a bigger handle to get your boot into it.

Jay Davis The easy pull really is easy. You just pull it up. No yanking, no tugging, no "throwing" the saw away from you. It can remain on the ground or a step or a log. The pull spins up a mechanism in the engine which "releases" at the top of the pull, thus turning the engine over. It really does work well. Have had mine over a year, and being in my 50s I do appreciate it.

I’m having a hard time fitting the specifications. So first off never used an actual chainsaw.. I use a pole saw all the time. I don’t need something so expensive, I’ll be using it around my house for limbs and trees.. but my trees are pretty big. 16” bar would be fine for a few trees but I don’t need a huge one. And I may use it here and there or I may eventually end up doing more cleanup with the yards I mow and landscape. Who knows I just know I want something to last and be the happy medium I need for the price I’m comfortable paying, don’t want to have to buy too big of one or too small of one and have to go get another one. I need to cut down some dead pine trees but I’m afraid they’re gonna fall on the house. And I can’t afford a tree company , so learn myself

i have 3 saw.. ms180 a 044(same as ms440) and a husqvarna 254(about the same a the 044). i mostly use the ms180.. easy to handle.. i climb trees and do all with the small ms180. for firewood cutting on the ground ill pick the 254 or 044 , both heavy but allot of power.. good for thick trees and fast cutting my advice.. you can cut anything with a small saw (up to 60cm thick trees).. you going to use it for firewood only or cut only 3 trees a year?.. just buy a small saw.. like the ms171 ms180 ms181 maybe 211 if you like a little more power you saw allot?.. get a big one and a small one.. like i have you going to climb trees or you just want a easy saw? get a light one: the 1 hand saws: ms150 ms193 .. 2.6kg and 3.3 kg. 1.3 and 1.8hp i find my ms180 allready a little to heavy with 4.1kg, buts its the cheaper hobby saw if i would buy my first saw. with the information i know now. i would buy a ms193 1.8hp and 3.3kg. and if i would not have the money i would buy the ms180 right over again. ;)

I would grab the 461 or the 066 99% of the time 066 had a 28" bar. 088 had a 6' bar used it for big silver maple stumps and nothing else. 461 is the go to brush saw with a 24" bar

When you sell a saw to homeowner Joe, you should sell them at least one extra chain and inform them they'll be spending half as much as the saw cost at the dealer every couple of years. That's to put a carb kit in along with other tune up maintenance. Most won't learn how to do any of those tasks properly and they should know what the true cost of ownership is. Also they won't be as likely to get frustrated when they need their saw and it doesn't run right. That's when people blame the brand and it was actually lack of maintenance or operator error.

I have a Stihl chainsaw which I purchased new and it never have been a good saw for me. The main problem I have is starting it, and when I did get it started it didn't do much, as I mainly use it my saws to cut limbs, and brush I can't get to with my tractor and brush hog around my rural home. There is my older Poulan saw which still works and have taken care of my place since I got it after the Winter storm we had in 2000, and I still have to depend on it. I purchased a new Stihl weed trimmer, and it works better than the saw I got, but I will never buy another Stihl saw.

Let me start by saying that I think the ms271 is a perfectly fine chainsaw. My question is in this video he states that the ms271 is built for constant heavy duty use correct? I thought the commercial saws were built for constant heavy duty use. From what I understand I didn't think there was much difference between the farm and ranch / homeowner saws other than size. I thought they were labeled Farm and Ranch because they were just bigger more powerful saws then the homeowner saws. I know there's a big difference between Pro Models and homeowner and farm and ranch saws. Maybe someone can enlighten me on this LOL

Hey stihl,or anyone out there who really knows!!!...question Are the engine parts the same in the PRO saws vs farm saws? Will the pro saw last longer?
@jdailey19811
@jdailey19811 6 жыл бұрын
AWESOMESAUCE in short, yes. They are built to last longer, because they are for the ones who will rely on their chainsaws to make a living. These saws are also much easier to repair, rebuild and parts are readily available, whereas the homeowner and ranch saws are a clamshell engine in a plastic case. Some call them "throw away saws", where people throw them out and go but new. These saws can be repaired and rebuilt, if you know what you are doing. If you take it to a shop, they purposely charge more per hour to make the time and parts in the saw make it more than what the saw is worth, and want you to buy a new saw. If you have the know how and a few hours of evening, you can repair and rebuild these saws that will work even better than they did brand new.

If you're not using your saw day in day out, you're not going to need to rebuild it. Just tune up from time to time, feed it good gas and sharpen the chain.

I love Stihl chainsaws but my advice is avoid the easy start option. it really isn't that hard to start don't know why they came up with that feature.
@benjamins9121

Right. As long as they're maintaining correctly they start up fine. I've had no problem starting mine in the teens and 20s F. That's about as cold as it get here in winter. I've been riding and racing 2 strokes my whole like though so I know exactly how to maintain and store them to avoid any problems. Like draining the carb, avoiding over-oiling since it doesn't really save the top end of the engine like people think. Stihl's ratio is just fine, clean filter, etc. Another thing is to really clear it out before storing it. I have an older model that I put a petcock on so I shut off the valve and run it WOT til the carbs empty so theres no oil to gunk up the inside of the carb and the spark plug is fully burnt off, a semi-fouled plug has a weak spark and that is a big part of hard starts on 2 strokes.

Yeah im 13 and use my dad ms180 and ms 250 there not hard to start at all. Now we are farmers so we're built for work but in reality i think a 5 year old could pull the ms180 the easy to start is just a reason to suck money out of the costumer and another mechanical part to fail throw some hay bales around for summer and fal then come mid fall and you start cutting wood to heat the house you'll find that starting a saw is easier than buttering toast. Just have a good mentor like your father to always help you and you'll be fine. My dad had used stihl for 30 years and I love em too,our local dealer is a friendly guy we visit alot we have5 stihls for use on the farm and at the hunting camp feed the stihl oil and ethanol free gas mixind and wood cutter bar and chain oil,keep that chain sharp and it will last you a life time.

Stihl 660 magnum is the way to go if your cutting some serious wood. It's worth the price, cuts like butter . I have both 660 & 880 an I don't think the 880 is worth the extra money for the extra power. The 660 will do everything you need to do. I have a 24/28/32/41/60 inch bars and I usually use the 32 cuz it has just enough power while still having a pretty big bar . Bigger bar less power. That's not to say the 60 inch doesn't get the job done. Happy chainsaw hunting !

Yeah but if all you’re doing is bucking average trees why carry the extra weight of a 661
@chad1755
@chad1755 8 ай бұрын
@@Johnnyreengo Because when you have a longer bar, you can buck standing up, which is easier on your back, even if you're holding a heavier powerhead. Heavier powerhead standing up is less fatiguing than bending over while holding a lighter saw.

I want to tell people about my brand new stihl chainsaw, i am 60 yrs old, farm boy for yrs.and very experienced,orchards and logging in my background. my friends have Sthil and love them, they are mostly bigger saws but some smaller sizes. i was building a "real log cabin "and making lots of lumber the hard way,with a chainsaw, and thought i should have a spare. i bought the 3rd saw from the bottom of the row of saws. it has the bigger chain though, not the 5/16. forgot the model name. anyway that saw is a HUGE DUD !! it does run ok, but here are a few of the many problems, first it is very hard starting and cold blooded. i have run Huskies mostly and they have been excellent, i know each model varies but this model is really bad ! i never planned to use it much, just have it as i spare, i would never think of making lumber with it,its to small for that. Next it does not oil the chain well, i called my friends who have Sthil saws, and they said make sure you buy the Sthil bar oil , it made NO difference, this is a new saw mind you (329.00 dollars) i take it apart and after only 20 minutes of use it is collecting crud in the oiling pathways inside of the base of the bar. i clean it out and try again, still ,not enough oil on the bar,i drip oil manually to get a job done. then it runs out of fuel quickly, and the caps are giving me so much trouble i can't believe it. i love the way the caps have a nice flap to make it easy to open while wearing gloves but i can't get them on easily, also it is almost impossible unless the oil level is 1/2 in below the top. ok ill baby the darn thing and try to get that part perfect. but still i cannot get the caps on without much much trouble, both caps. i know the marks are needing to be alined so don't think i am that stupid. anyway there are more problems than these i have mentioned.It also leaks oil, i must store it on its side or i will have a big oil slick on the floor, that is ridiculous. DAMN !! i do understand it is not a pro model but 329 dollars i expect a better saw, i am a busy guy and did not have time or will to try and return it ,and no doubt they would either try to give me another of the same model or tell me i need to bring more paperwork so i didn't return it. its not easy to do returns where i am, its a lot of driving etc. so its been 16 months and all i have is a blog where i can at least tell the truth of this worthless saw. maybe a rep will see my honest note and make it right for me,who knows. send me a email. organicduderanch@yahoo.com.thanks

C Jacob you're probably flooding it I made the same mistake I flooded my engine multiple times and got frustrated after trying for an hour to start it come to find out I was flooding it by trying to start it with the choke on. First set the choke on and then pull no more than 3 times or until the chainsaw burps. then switch it to half choke and then pull until it starts which for me usually takes one or two pulls

I would NOT buy a Stihl after my current experience with a key component product defect, coupled with Stihl UK's customer service. I bought my Stihl MS391 in December 2016 and used maybe 6 weekends a year in my large garden, so small usage compared to forestry/tree surgeons. Last month it had problems starting so I took it to a Stihl dealer/service agent and they reported that the thread on the cylinder head is damaged so the spark plug won’t tighten enough for the machine to start the engine. I was quoted £275 for labour and parts on a chainsaw that cost me £475 four years ago, now retailing at £650. Stihl refused to compensate me or find a mutual resolution as they insist it's a wear & tear issue It's crazy. What would you do?

A Pro would know what he was looking for? A Pro would have a local dealer to lend him saws that he was interested in? Homeowners looking for professional saws on the other hand, are simply an accident waiting to happen. Don't blame the distributor for being conservative in their recommendations, blame the law-suits that result from Darwinian accidents.
