One thing I do to help with my pronouncing ion as well as fluidity is to read texts aloud while recording them. Very awkward and embarrassing at first, but it really helps with fluid reading, speaking and pronounciation. Even without a teacher, I can compare my pronounciation with that of a reading programme and find obvious differences.

圣诞节快乐🎄 This is really great advice to anyone self studying or doing self study to supplement classroom learning. I have been using Everyday Chinese pretty much since I began learning, and it's the only channel with solid learning and exceptional advice. ❤😊🇨🇳 I really wish I had more Chinese speaking people in my area, in my life in general. It's sad. If I can give one piece of advice- what she said about pronunciation is so true. When I first began learning, I constantly would mimic my native speaking teachers. It's almost as if your voice will change when you speak a different language. Once you master pronunciation, the tones and everything else will fall into place.

I just joined! It has been difficult to find good Chinese lessons on You tube or the internet for that matter. I live in Canada and everything is in traditional characters, even the news! But when I see a Chinese movie, they write the dialogues in simplified Chinese. I have Pleco which is wonderful, but my question is, which characters should I learn, traditional or simplified?

I was told that nobody in China learns through pinyin. I would appreciate it if you kindly let us know how is chinese taught to the natives, I mean without pinyin? Honestly, when the natives speak and there's no pinyin it's impossible to understand the tones of the words, I'm talking from the point of view of the non-natives. I wonder what will happen if the non-natives have to think of the tones for every word and then speak - I think then after one year we will be able to say ni hao only.

Do children born in countries with phonetic alphabets learn to read before they learn to speak? No. Their ears become attuned to the sounds so when they are told a word they intuitively know how it sounds and how to produce that tone (which for them is not a ‘tone’ it’s just the way the word is said) Ideally a non native reaches this level of comfort with tones as well.
