Sell or license your invention idea or patent to a company or business. This is the first of two videos on the basic method for marketing your invention. This video explains the steps involved in developing your invention, finding a company that might buy your invention, and then pitching the idea to the company. There is more detailed information about selling your invention on my website at borgesrolle.com/invention-mark.... If you have any questions or comments, please post them in the comments section below.
See my FREE course on how to prepare a NDA (Confidentiality Agreement) which includes sample NDAs you can use: inventive-learning-a37b.think...
Here is the second video which is on marketing your invention by creating a startup company: • How to Sell Your Idea ...
Here is a summary of what's involved in selling your invention to a company:
Preliminary step: Secure your patent rights in the idea/invention first - file a patent application if possible BEFORE you attempt to sell the invention. If you don't have a patent application filed, then you'll need to have everyone sign a confidentiality agreement (including prospective companies).
1. Preparing the Idea or Invention for Demonstration:
Develop the idea to the point where it can be reliably demonstrated. Make a working prototype if possible and make that prototype as professional looking/working as possible. Use 3D printing if necessary. If it's a software invention, then develop it sufficiently that you can demo the software easily with the software performing smoothly and without glitches. The goal here is to make a prototype/demo that will blow people away! Make it as impressive as you can.
2. Identify the Companies You Want to Sell To:
Think about the sort of company that might be interested in purchasing or licensing your invention. If it's a physical product, then target manufacturers. If it's a software type product, then consider a service provider as a sales target. Use a business directory to target companies that match the companies you think might be interested. Search the database for companies that manufacture or sell similar products or services. You're more likely to have better success with a smaller local company, so search using location and number of employees. Google "business directory" and you'll find links to multiple websites and resources that can supply you with suitable lists of business which you can apply. Just get the contact information for the CEO or president or other key executives of the companies so you know who you have to contact.
3. Pitching your Invention for Sale to the Company:
This step is the hardest. The key here is to get in actual contact with the CEO, president or director of the company. You want to make a direct contact with the person who is "in charge" of the company. Avoid submitting the invention/idea to the "invention submission" department of the company and instead try to submit it directly to the "person in charge" of the company. A personal meeting is always best, so try to arrange a personal 1 on 1 meeting with the president/CEO of the company and give that person a demonstration of your invention. Presidents/CEOs are very busy, so make your presentation/talk/demo VERY quick and to the point (a few minutes at most). In the "sales business" this is called the elevator pitch - a pitch which is so short and to the point that you can lay it all out in the time it takes to ride the elevator with someone.
Conclusion: It's not easy to do, but if you take a methodic approach, you can maximize the chances of selling your invention to a company. Make your demo as profession and "wow inducing" as possible and try hard to get a personal 1 on 1 meeting with the key decision maker in the company. Expect rejections but stay optimistic and enthusiastic.

Greetings Elias....It is True... it is very difficult to reach critical decision makers of a company when it comes to selling a patent. The best way for them to steal your invention is, immediately after your presentation they will tell you that "our in-house team is already working on it"... That's when you realize that they stole it on the spot.

That is possible. However, keep in mind that many company are continually working on new products, so it’s quite possible that they are working on something similar. It’s best to protect yourself with a patent application.

What an interesting video. I have done most everything suggested in this video and have found you to be correct in your analysis. I invented an overhead disinfection system for businesses and public places. I have the patent, drawings, video and the University of Georgia built the prototype and it won 3rd place out of 104 entries in their engineering competition. I think it could be good for public transportation, doctor's offices, etc. It uses disinfectant spray or UV lighting. I need help launching it. It can also disinfect grocery carts.

The idea is to use that one to learn on. Get a win, even if it's not your best idea. Use that new knowledge to then progress to your next easiest idea. Crawl before you jump. Just my 2 cents worth. I ventured and sold to retailers and direct. I found it easier to sell to retailers because obtaining large lists of contacts is way easier to get than reaching direct customers. Then later licensed it, now getting royalties. Since, it's been many much more complex homebrew related systems, some marine products, industrial valve, etc.

@PatentToronto 3 жыл бұрын
It’s subjective. It’s potentially easier to communicate with the management of a smaller company. A 50 million per year company sounds like it’s borderline between small enough to be easier to approach and too big to easily entertain inquiries from independent inventors. Good luck.

Very interesting! Thanks for this information. If you present an NDA to a company, what makes you sure they don't "steal" your idea? What if the company just tells you that they already have worked on this idea or a similar one, and therefore are not interested in yours? Also, can your idea be a lever into that company for a job, eg. in R&D? Are companies interested in "inventor type persons", or do they prefer people with relevant education, like in engineering?
@PatentToronto
@PatentToronto 3 жыл бұрын
The NDA gives you some protection in that it makes it possible to sue the company for breach of contract if they try to steal your invention. If you sue them and you have a good paper trail and can prove it’s possible and reasonable to believe that they stole the idea from you, then they have the burden to prove they got the idea before they met you. It’s not ideal, but it’s likely just enough protection to discourage them from stealing your idea.

For your second question. The bigger the company, the harder that is. People in R&D generally have an engineering degree and a track record of outside the box thinking. Assuming you don't have that degree, it's very hard to get them to take a chance on you. Showing them your outside the box thinking with your invention is a good start, but likely not very deep. The last thing they want to do is have to spend a lot of time training you on everything else. or getting you up to speed on understanding their ERP or MRP types of programs. CAD software, etc. Smaller companies, absolutely. Seen it happen a few times.
@_Viking
@_Viking 3 жыл бұрын
@@EVATVDirect sure, it's not easy. But there's a slim possibility for the right person. If I'm that person, I don't know. But its worth trying for someone if he has the talent and dedication that makes him stand out. Thank you for your answer :)
@EVATVDirect
@EVATVDirect 3 жыл бұрын
@@_Viking I would say to increase your chances, start watching youtube videos on those categories I mentioned. Just to familiarize yourself with the terms they would use when asking if you have ever worked with them. If nothing more than to show you know what they are talking about when they say ECO. Even if it's to say you have never worked with them but are reading up on them in your spare time. That looks really good. You might also apply to a lower level technical position there. Like test technician, possibly quality assurance. You don't always need a technical degree for those, and you get on the job training and a solid chance to prove yourself fast.

I’m a patent lawyer/agent. You can go to the US patent office’s website and search for patents where I was the patent agent if you want a list of inventions where I obtained a patent for the inventor.

Hopefully, you have filed for patent protection before meeting the company. Also, you should have the company sign a confidentiality agreement (aka NDA) before meeting them. Those measures will give you significant protection.

I have an invention that can prevent lots of car accidents happening every day. I have tried to contact some companies and the more I tried, the more got frustrated to be able to contact the right people in the companies. Have you any contact with any company in the automotive industry? My invention can be applied to any kind of vehicle but it is more useful for trucks and trailers. I am open to share any profits of the invention with you or any other person who can help me present it to the right people.

Thanks for your message. I can’t provide you with any contacts in the auto industry; however, I will soon be working on a video about contacting decision makers in a company and that might help you.

@PatentToronto

You should detail your invention in an inventor’s notebook and keep it secure and safe. Then, formulate a marketing plan/strategy. Don’t tell anyone your idea without having them sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) first.

The wow factor can apply to how well executed your invention is. Even products which are intended to perform ordinary or mundane things can be very impressive if they are well designed and well executed.

If you publicly disclosed your invent more than a year ago, then it may be too late to get patent protection for your invention. I suggest you contact a patent lawyer/attorney/solicitor local to you and discuss the situation with him or her. Good luck.
