If you're selling to a dealer, check out their FB, YT, Insta, etc. If you see loads of employees, their large posse, or they showing off flash cars, expensive clothes, etc. Expect to get pennies on the dollar if you're selling to them. They need to pay for those fancy clothes and cars somehow!! I never understood how watch dealers are showing off their expensive possessions like cars and clothes, and baller lifestyle, LOL.

In some other video you mentioned that dealers and enthusiasts moved a lot of watches on Instagram? What do you think about that?
@JohnPWatches
@JohnPWatches 6 жыл бұрын
It certainly works for segments of the watch industry. For example Richard Mille, Lange, certain Patek, other high end move well on IG. There are not too many of them in circulation and the demand is high so potential buyers in that segment have to buy where they are and where they are is in the IG pages of the casual lifestyle dealers.

No mention of chrono24. I know they upped their fees last year for sellers but how is the selling experience? Any protections for sellers?
@JohnPWatches
@JohnPWatches 6 жыл бұрын
They provided unparalleled buyer protection- unfortunately legitimate dealers no longer like selling on their platform. We pulled out because it was difficult to remain competitive with the private parties when their fees factored into the item made it too expensive. We strive to be cost competitive while still providing the security and peace of mind of dealer.

Great video JP, thanks. I only just sold my Datejust to a small dealer yesterday and it was hassle free. I thing though…. I sold it for about 17% less than what they will probably sell it for… is that about right or should I have pushed for more? Thanks.

Very insightful! Thank you for sharing the knowledge. I totally agree with the concept of buying enjoyment. I also noticed that what creates value about a watch is often the way people talk about it and communicate their excitement and passion. So even if I would probably never pull the trigger, I tend to have a growing affection for brands like Frederique Constant after watching some videos of Frederico, or Squale after TGV's. Keep up the great videos but last year's intro was more interesting in my opinion.

Hey John! Great content, I have a question and maybe you an Fed can shed some light, I’m from Guatemala and we have a Rolex AD, the thing is they just received a whole bunch of watches that include a Batman, Pepsi, Daytona, etc. Naturally I called the owner and asked about them, and the answer was that they had them but were selling them way above retail, shouldn’t they abide by the retail price Rolex gives them or can they do whatever they want with the prices? Thanks
@JohnPWatches
@JohnPWatches 6 жыл бұрын
Are they selling them preowned or new? If they are truly still an AD and are selling them above retail you should report them to Rolex. it's extremely disgusting. a Rolex AD friend of mine tells me they can lose their AD status, but perhaps Rolex will look the other way considering there may only be one Rolex AD in the country and don't want to go through hassle vetting another shop to be one. It is very hard in these nations unfortunately to police this.

Moral of the story - as it goes for most things you purchase - at the moment you buy it, it is the holy grail, the best bang for the buck, fantastic,... when you sell it: yes but it has scratches, it has been used, it is passee, two tone are you kidding, everybody wants stainless, gold I give you the price of the gold,... Collecting watches as an investment, the times are over you could purchase ex RN Subs for nearly nothing,... You need investing a lot of money and hope the watch keeps up it's value.

Spot on with the advice . General rule of thumb the more you pay for a watch the more you stand to lose when you sell ...There is a relatively shallow pool when your selling a 7k sports watch . There is not going to be a line of guys in your neighbourhood waiting to buy it’s not like selling a 200 buck piece .. Ebay is a nightmare , wouldn’t sell a high end piece using this route . Even with Rolex sports models a year or two old, dealers tend to still be offering 25 % under list .. Either way there tends to be a sizeable loss . My advice is don’t buy an expensive watch if you think you may want to sell . I here guys talking of investment pieces , for most this is delusional....

I also sell on eBay but I just don't get the No Returns tick box it's worthless..a buyer for whatever reason can return the item and get a full refund..I have had items returned that have been swapped for faulty items and EBay and PayPal will always find in favour of the buyer..so you have now lost the original item and the buyer has a perfect item and a full refund...selling to a dealer yes you will probably get a lower offer but the transaction is hassle free...and the dealer obviously has to make a profit...

While you certainly want to be able to recoup as much as possible when selling, remember guys: buy what you want. Watches are luxury goods, not investments. Over the course of years, your watch and watch trading will never beat the compounding interest in a simple savings account, much less a decent stock portfolio. Buy what you enjoy, wear it, and get some money back (hopefully) when you want to change it up. That's about it.

I've been a fulltime eBayer for several years. eBay in general is a bad place to sell expensive/ luxury goods. I wouldn't recommend selling items over $1,000, especially to people unfamiliar with eBay. There are lots of scams that sellers fall for, and also you will get ridiculous buyer demands and returns; people want something for free if it arrives a few days late, people claim their item was not delivered (possibly lost or stolen package), if that happens it is your responsibility and you will have to refund the buyer.

Just because you are in the certain percentage where it was fine, does not make it 100% or even any percent more or less true. It is a self bias as it is possible, statistically that even if only 1% of deals follow through on craigslist, you are in the 1% so of course all deals follow through. This is just a number for example. Same effect is when people say “i’ll never get into a car accident” because it has not happened to them, yet there are tons of people that it does happen, giving them opposite bias. Which city do you live in?
