Found your channel just a few days ago and noticed the Louisiana stamp on some work and got me wondering. Watched a few more videos and you referenced ida and southeast La being hot, I live in the Hammond/Ponchatoula are and guessing you are pretty close to me based on the church t-shirt you wore in one video. Good evening just happened to trip onto your channel and heard you discussing hooking up temp power, FYI a 40 amp breaker requires at least number 8 gauge wire. and when you go over 100 feet due to the drop in amperage and voltage you should run number 6 gauge wire which is good for 65 amps. I understand you spent money's on the 10's but it's only good for 30 Amp at best . Just advise for your safety good luck Jerry.

The few commissions I've done has always started with "Hey, can you make this?" and I've always answered "I can make anything!" Doesn't matter what it is, I'll take on the challenge. I'm right there with you on making pieces and saving up for tools. I started doing scroll saw work with a cheap, WEN scroll saw I got off FB because the wife wanted some Christmas ornaments. Posted them to my regular page (didn't have a business page at that point) and next thing I knew a few cousins wanted personalized ornaments. Made those and then friends of those cousins wanted them. Next thing I know, I'm spending all of Oct - Dec making these and made enough to upgrade from that cheap WEN to a thousand dollar Pegas' scroll saw. That was one tough press of the Buy button, let me tell ya!

I'm interested in getting a planer. Do you have any recommendations between the two and three knife Planers?
@burnstockwoodworking
@burnstockwoodworking Жыл бұрын
I used the rigid and Porter cable 3 blade planers for a while, then an old belsaw (it was a monster) 3 blade planer. I would recommend the rigid out if I had to choose one of the above. I'm currently using a cutech bench top planer which comes with a helical head and I love it. Much cleaner surface and blades last forever. It's around $700. You can find a used 3 blade planer for significantly less, just hop on FB marketplace.

For commissions. For small crafts like this I'll do a post on my business FB and then, if there's not a lot of interest I'll put it on marketplace but that rarely occurs. I use marketplace as little as possible.
@crossgrainwoodproductsltd9230
@crossgrainwoodproductsltd9230 Жыл бұрын
To the guy who can't get started because he can't afford the tools. Most of us bought tools second hand and we still do. You can't afford an electric planer, you use a hand planer. Can't afford a table saw, use a straight edge and a circular saw or a hand saw. Or borrow them from a friend or family member, etcetera. No one starts with all brand-new tools unless you win the lottery and or already have it. It takes time and energy to start any business or hobby. It is much easier to whine than it does to do the work. Save money or get a second part-time job. When I first bought my house I had a rubber-made tote to put my tv on. When I decided to buy some furniture and do some remodeling, I worked all day at a very physical job 8-10 hrs. Go home take a nap, get up and then would go onto another full-time job overnight. I didn't want a credit card bill on top of a mortgage, so I did that for one year. I took that money, 3/4s into the house and the other quarter into an emergency savings account just for the house. I bought furniture, appliances, and supplies for remodeling). Was it worth it? Absolutely! That was one year's salary that was for one purpose only. Nothing unnecessary was bought out of that money. So it also takes discipline and restraint. If you really put your mind to it and it's what you want, you will find away to do it. By the way, I was able to purchase quality antique furnishings, which now some 25 yrs later are worth 3 times what I paid for them. An investment in my future.

I do not. If I lost it in marketplace I will put a price but if we're sharing a commission I don't list prices. This has actually helped to lead into more work because now someone that's interested will message us separately and inquire price which gives us the opportunity to make another sale.
