Hi Matt, Im 66 and have worked as a residential contractor when i was in my 30's, but after having back surgery back in the mid 80's and then the economy where I lived ( Cape Hatteras N.C) went bust and the bank fore closed on two spec houses that I had up for sale, I went bankrupt. But I've never gave up the one thing thats in my blood which must be saw dust, because I still love to spend my days out in the garage building boxes and frame for my honey bees. But now that I've seen you on youtube, you have inspired me to start making things to sell, as we are presently living on just my S.S.. My wife hasn't worked for 11 years due to a medical disability. We've been fighting for her to get disability. for the last 3 years by keep getting denied. We finally got a layer so we're keeping out finger crossed. My dad died feuding with his brother over petty nonsense and greed. Before they started feuding, my uncle recommended that my dad use his limited but practical woodworking and welding skills into being productive with our comparitive to the neighborhood larger backyard. Building upstate NY mountain style deck reclining chairs was suggested. Pre cov, rich fools were spending 400 a chair and we have a near by lumber yard. Knowing my dad he could have pumped out alot of chairs in the good weather days and saved the scraps for smalls. He would have outperform his brother's monthly side Hustles and reinvest into something useful like another house. Instead he didn't listen and died poor. Don't be like him, don't waste your skills on blind hate when you can openly spite them with productivity.

I'm a deck and Porch builder in the process of building my first wood shop. I run into demo jobs a few times a year where I could keep some or all the wood I tear down. (pressure treated) With a shop, I could clean it up, joint it, plane it, re-saw it, or whatever to make stuff. I get paid to tear it down then it's sweat equity time to make it user-friendly. Plus I have all the scrap from the new construction we do. Already saving all the scrap vinyl sleeve drops for some Ideas I have.

awesome video brother... I've had my custom shop going for almost 20 years, I do leather wood and metal, it didn't matter whether it was a craft show, flea market or pow-wow, the smalls made the money, I remember many weekends where I would sell $400-$500 worth of handcrafted leather roses in 2 days for $10 each, plus all the other smalls ! I actually designed and made a mini- picnic table similar to the one you showed for the squirrels, but mine held a dollar store salt and pepper shaker set that I included, I sold 2 dozen in one weekend at $15 each, and that was almost 10 years ago.... people love decorations, and useful items

Focusing on lower-cost higher volume things like this is also going to let you greatly expand your market. The amount of people who would want a $1000 piece of furniture are harder to come by than how many people could drop $30 on something they thing is cute.

I live in a very rural, Gold rush area of CA built in the 1850's. I haul old lumber home with 15 layers of paint and batch all kinds of smalls out of it for one of the stores on main street. We both make money and everyone is happy. Smalls is where the money is and if you batch it right, you can listen to music in your shop all day and enjoy the work. Thanks for your videos. Seems like you live a cool lifestyle. I'm seriously considering doing this kind of stuff full time.

Good afternoon, Matt. In recent months my home restoration business has taken off again; so I am doing smaller builds in the workshop. My favorite (and most profitable) project is the garden trellis you recently remade the video on. I'm actually using pressure treated fence pickets so my build cost is less than $5! I've sold nearly 200 trellises at $25 each! The best part is that I have a free spot right next to a very busy road in my hometown to set up a sell my items on the weekends!

So you literally work for nothing… 20$ sales -5$ material leaves you 15$ to pick up the material, cut, drill, assemble + take time out of your day to sell them… assuming you do things right you have taxes coming out off your profit as well
@rickmann52272 жыл бұрын
@@martin8829 It seems you're missing the idea of mass production. You broke down his profit per item. It doesn't work that way. 1 trip to the store. All materials picked-up(not an extra trip, you go when you NEED to) If you have it on order, it's ready to go when you get there. At the shop is where the real time is saved. Every cut is reproduced quickly , production style. You could cut all the pieces in one shift. For all 200 trellises. A couple more shifts to produce them. That's not much work for $4000 gross profit.

@@cattleNhay The point? As I once told a loan officer when questioned about depositing cash in my bank account when she was saying some nonsense like, "It's illegal to do that." I could not help myself, "Do not say stupid statements. What is illegal is not reporting your income. I also collect cash for my rental properties and deposit that money, too. If someone writes me a bad check, then we are on a cash basis moving forward. Check our Income Tax statements and you will see we Legally paid tax on the cast received. NOT reporting it would have been illegal since we have made money." Who cares if the IRS is reading these posts? They have to pay tax on what they earn and spend as well.

Interesting! I make crooks, market sticks and other kinds of sticks here in the UK. My sticks are carefully crafted entirely by hand and finished with oils. Many stick makers follow the same process. At a county show a few years ago I witnessed a stick maker displaying is beautiful selection for sale with price tags of around £150 each and he sold one - all day - and had to negotiate down on the price to get the deal. In another area of the same show on the same day was a guy with bins full of 'rough-cut' sticks; not straightened, mostly green wood, not sanded... in fact nothing more than a stick cut out of a hedge. His 'walking sticks' were advertised at just £5... and he'd sold over one hundred by lunchtime.

I’m retired and really enjoy building smalls. All of my material is free but free wood is not always easy wood. My two sources are a fencing supply company and pallets. I make coasters ,planter boxes , wall pictures displays, and coat racks for the most part. All of my material is from torn down cedars fences and a few pallets. Free wood can require a bit of work but the character in reclaimed wood is amazing and people love it.

Thank you, Matt. The best way I have found for me is to copy exactly what you, or someone else does. Then, I look at it and think, how can I change this to make it mine? What would I change? What would I add or take out? It seems to be easier for me to look at an actual Item (not a video or picture), to get my inspiration to make an idea mine. It takes me longer because I have to build, and then tear down, and then build again, and again. Many times, my design changes multiple times before I am done. However, what I end up with is completely mine, and I am very happy with it because I have spent the time to understand each piece intimately. It may not be the most efficient way, but it works for me. I thought this might help some others who are suffering creatively.

The wall art is my main income source. I gifted one that I was experimenting with (made with ripped 2x4s and 2x6s I had salvaged), and people saw it and I had orders right away for half a dozen more. I mostly do them as commission pieces, and it's crazy how much someone will pay for a unique design that matches their decor. I'm building up a stock of various sizes and designs also to put in an art booth at a fair this summer. By the way, if you do these I've found it best to rip at about 1/2". I tried 1/4 and those tend to warp too much due to uneven drying, unless you have old dry salvage wood. The distressed look also seems to sell best. Use a combo of stains, milk paint, salt effect, and even glue crackle.

Matt, I just want to thank you for your videos. On the 7th of April 2014, I was forced to make the decision to put my mother in an assisted home or shut down my fairly new business to take care of her after she was diagnosed with Dementia and Alzheimers. The obvious choice is mom comes first, and so I shut the doors to take care of mom. All the while thinking. No big deal I can go back to work anytime, being I have been in construction my entire life since the age of 14. Here it is 8 years later getting ready to turn 58 in May and reality hit and hit hard and got me thinking. I'm too damn old to start all over again from scratch. And one day as I was practicing my lines " High, welcome to Walmart" or "Would you like that Super Sized?" preparing for the very real possibility of what kind of job I will be able to get at my age while watching KZbin with an adult beverage ( Jack Daniels). One of your videos popped up and caught my attention so I watched it. And for the past few weeks, I've been checking out your videos. It never dawned on me that I have a bunch of materials leftover from jobs I've done and tools that are just sitting and collecting dust and rust and not being used. And now kicking myself in the butt for not thinking of doing this myself for the past 8 years. And chances are I probably could have had close to $500,000.00 in the bank by now working from home doing this. Thank you for saving me from the Walmart Greeters position and or bail money for when I pull some smart-ass teenager over the counter for a lesson on how to respect his elders. Again thank you, sir.

Thank you! These ideas are so inspiring! Each year I custom paint Easter eggs for the family and have made display racks as gifts, but as I near retirement, I 'll need to ramp up on the smalls from scrap for some extra cash. These are great!

For paint, hit your big box and local paint stores and buy their mistints. Pennies on the dollar.

I so appreciate you doing this to help your fellow woodworkers. I have so much spare wood in the garden that is about to become a huge profit!

I love these videos! I started out a few years ago after wife wanted a barn door console with sliding doors and I became addicted to wood working,. I was making consoles to try to make that big sale. I made a custom pantry size sliding barn door piece and sold for $2700, but now I am no longer chasing those big ticket items alone. I will centralize my woodworking around these "smalls" items like you said. One thing that is hard for me to wrap my head around is the concept of being one of many woodworkers and how to separate from every other wood worker out there. Maybe it just seems that way, but seems like its becoming a crowded small business idea.

I make license plate birdhouses and sell them for $15. I bend the bottom into a U shape, the top one into a peak shape, and then crown staple the two wood "home plate" shaped pieces and drill the entry hole and a screw covered with rubber tubing for a perch.

I'm digging these ideas, Matthew. Thanks! I've been making bottle openers, ones with metal inserts that are handheld, and ones that are mounted on the wall with a bin for bottle caps at the bottom. They're quick to make and easy to sell.

Thank you so much for your advice. I mainly sell knives & survival gear at various gun shows during the winter; and I’ve noticed that even there, while higher end knives ($200 & up) may bring people to my table to look, it’s the low to mid range knives ($30-$75) that everyone actually buys. Unfortunately no one goes to gun shows during the spring & summer, so I’m starting up a Woodcrafting business to keep things going during those slow months. And who knows, if it gets big enough I may just make it my primary business. Either way, I really appreciate the advice you give.

Yes and a valid point... Always have the "Draw". Get them in and sell them something...

Matthew, I love watching your video's. They're very informative and much appreciated. I have been watching for the last 3-4 weeks and have put to use on making a few things and absolutely love it. I am retired (not by choice) and have all the time in the world to experiment and receive inspiration on the things that can be done. We have a lumber mill 3 Mike's from the house that throws out good scrap wood and load up every now and then and use it on many projects. I bought a planner to plan it, I cut down a 100' eastern red cedar tree on our property and have cut many slabs to dabble around with. Many thanks to your video's and informative information!

Nice video. I've been in that same rut of making large pieces of furniture and not being able to sell them for what I'm asking. My uncle suggested I make birdhouses. So I made about 30 birdhouses and bird feeders of all different styles and shapes. Painted some and left some in it's natural patina. Of course this is all old reclaimed barn wood, that's my style that's all I use for my projects. And most of the bird houses/feeders are scrap pieces left over from my large tables, shelves, bed frames etc etc. Well I parked on the side of the hwy where I always park and I sold every one of those bird houses. I mean a few people bought several at a time. I was asked to make more and they'd come back and buy them! And I sold a couple of my larger pieces to boot. so I'm focused on making smaller items like the birdhouses and some of your suggestions as well! Thanks
