Using leg drive is major key. Cool seeing how the different pros are serving nowadays

Hey Ryan, fantastic detailing with great explanation, yet again ... Just one question - which drill(s) during practice will help to achieve "the body goes up using leg drive, when the racquet goes down" ?

Brilliant illustrations & explanation. Sometimes I think the word leg drive is misinterpreted as a push, leg some sort of a squat motion. But it's really like a quick down and up on the balls of the feet like a basketball jump shot. It's quite tricky for many people.

Well I just re watched my own service motion and my racket tip is around 9-11 o’clock and sometimes 7-9 o’clock at the time of the leg drive. Essentially I am losing power. I’ll try to practice with shadow swings to fix the muscle memory. I wonder if this will increase my serve speed. Will be interested to find out! Thanks for the tips.

Happy to help. Make sure your toss is low e enough that you can drive up correctly. Many players toss so high that their leg drive is delayed. Thanks for checking!!

Does Sampras have the same technique??? Sampras is similar to which one(Taylor, Isner or Kyrgios)?
@2MinuteTennis2 жыл бұрын
Sampras is closest to Isner when it comes to leg drive timing. But his motion doesn’t hit the birthday hat like Isner. Thanks!

This last video explains the timing of the leg drive. I have found that by starting to lift the ball from the inside leg and accentuating my back to the net, I can get the racquet to drop by pointing three fingers to the sky and turning to the net. (Letting the racquet go) I play with the grip to place the ball into the three areas: out wide, body and center line. You might want to comment on these issues.

1:14 so the range of acceptablility when yo explode up, is it better if you go up earlier like Taylor? Or is it the same

Great video! Just what I needed as I drive up when the racket is already down but it is so ingrained I don’t know how to fix it. If my toss is low I just don’t drop the racket down so that doesn’t fix the problem. What else can I do?

Again, wrong diagnosis here by this coach, early racquet drop has nothing to do with the toss ball height, it is a bad behavior a player does in serves. Quite a few atp and wta pros did early drop when serving. One extreme example is a pro player started serving from the lowest racquet drop position. The motion of early racquet drop is such that a player starts dropping racquet before his body begins to move upward by pushing his legs against the ground to initiate the serve.

Interesting that Fritz seems very straight up and down as opposed to Isner and Krygios who have their chests pointed high...might lead to shoulder issues.

These big servers are big servers because of their height. They have stronger legs because they carry around more weight every day, They have more range of motion (leverage) because of their longer limbs, and with the trajectory of there height they can hit 100% flat ball and get it in the box. Thank you though for the analysis you are a very good coach. I would bet Schwartzman has the same or better technique however hell never be able to bomb 130 serves because of his height.

You are correct about the definition. But knowing the definition isn’t enough to fix it. When you see a player with early racket drop it’s almost always that their toss is too high. Their leg drive is then delayed bc they can’t explode up yet bc there’s not ball. That results in the racket motion continuing and “dropping” too early behind the back. Except, it’s not the racket’s fault bc the toss was so high the legs couldn’t explode up. When you lower the toss the legs explode earlier and racket drop and leg drive timing are corrected. You keep talking about the definition. I’m talking about, in this video, why it happens and how to fix it.

@@2MinuteTennis no, I am talking about the fact that ball toss height has nothing to do with early racquet drop. So changing toss height is not a fix. For example, these 3 pro players all have early racquet drop: wawrinka, potapova, swiatek.
@2MinuteTennis Жыл бұрын
This will be the last time I respond. All three of the players you mentioned have tosses that are too high. The reason their rackets are “early” is because their legs are delayed. Why you ask? Bc they can’t explode up until the ball comes down from their high toss. If they all lowered their toss, their legs would be forced to drive up earlier, resulting in the racket not dropping early yet. You keep talking about WHAT early racket drop is. I’m talking about how to FIX it.

This is a strange breakdown to be honest. It's not that "you should bend your knees when you release the ball" but more so because you are tossing it forward into the court, so therefore your body leans in naturally which causes your knees to bend on their own because your center of gravity shifted and if your legs are still straight as your upper body leans forward, you would be off balance and fall.

Copying pros is often a surprisingly bad strategy for amateur players. Often there are things that pros invest a lot of time and money into that are outside the scope of normal tennis players. For example on the serve a lot of pros have a toss which is more difficult to do but harder for the opponent to read. If you copy this type of stuff as an amateur player, you may see inconsistent results and years of struggle with your game because shockingly you are not a pro, you're not serving hundreds of balls per week. So if you're going to try to copy pros, make sure you understand the level of investment and determination its going to take to get throughput of your strokes. Yes you can have a massive serve, but its going to be a long hard road getting there doing it that way.
