I like how Patrick works with kids. He's so calm and supporting. Like how he shows to the student with every gesture and intonation that he will be successful. It's like... I don't know... listening to Patrick it's impossible even to imagine that something else but success is even possible in this world. Great job!

He's tweaking the kids serve. It looks like coach is getting him a feel for wrist action. Kid looks pretty coordinated and loose to begin with. Serena used a power slice on lots of second serves for easy points as did Pete. I might be wrong but probably coach emphasized that.

Hi Patrick may I ask as its been bit confusing to me, for slice serve when I watched a number of slow motion videos from the pros, most of them would pronate on their slice serve, so I am bit confused on whether to pronate or not as I have heard that if you pronate there is more power. Thanks.

I've seen a few coaching videos (and slow mo pro serves) where they still pronate and rotate their arms when hitting slice. Basically what he was trying to do at the start of the video. What do u think abt that Patrick?

Federer pronates on every slice serve and does not hit the outside of the ball. He contacts the ball at the same location flat and slice. What changes is the direction of the swing path to produce the Sidespin.

I'll tell you a serve you hardly ever see pros use. Why I don't know. That is a hard flat serve out wide to FH on deuce side. The reason it's effective is the returner invariably is looking for a slice to pull him off court but you can do same with flat and it's coming at him faster so it messes his timing. Even if you get it close to him it's an unexpected body shot. And if he's prepared to hit the velo of a slower slice you get a lot of flubs, weak return, or swings to hard and hits off court. I think Isner and Kyrgios do it. And probably Dustin Brown did it to flummox Rafa at Wimbledon a few years back. You hardly ever see the gun read 120-130 out wide in deuce court always about 100-110ish for pros so you know they're not hitting a good hard flat serve that way. ✔it out next time you watch a match.
@MrMaverick0777
@MrMaverick0777 2 жыл бұрын
How consistent are you at hitting flat outwide on the deuce side? Unfortunately because of how one’s body rotates during the serve the slice happens more natural on the outwide on the deuce side and is extremely difficult to hit accurately and consistently. It is a fairly inconsistent serve to do and much much easier to return asswell since the ball is moving in a straight line and you can move out of its way easier. That’s why you see the pro’s using the slice more often for a body serve on the deuce side.

@@MrMaverick0777 I just got done hitting a basket full of serves and my serves are 105 to maybe 120 and was hitting them to some young 20 year old. About 75% going in the box. Then I'd go T on the deuce side as well. And was aceing him or making him flubs. The deal is I stand half way between serve mark and the single sideline. That way the serve crosses the low part of net close to middle. Try it it's not that difficult. I'm 6'2" so fairly tall makes it easier. I should make a video of it.

@@willkittwk wow man 105-120 mph. That’s really impressive. I would love to see a video of this. I’m sure I’ll be able learn more from that video on how to do what you are doing. I’m pretty sure no pro/coach has ever tried this and that’s why we don’t see it in our sport today. I’m really interested seeing this video of yours it would be great if you can include a speed gun aswell. Cause I’m 6’2” aswell and would like to learn from it. Maybe it’s a tactic I can use teach my students and I can become a better coach. So send me a message when you have done that. 😊

@@MrMaverick0777 I just hit about 200 last night. About 1/3 flat to FH deuce court. I put a very good returner there and he was standing back of Baseline bout 10 -12 ft. He literally didn't know what to do when I crushed a sharp angle flat. Then I told him he'll have to move in closer to cut the angle but of course you'll have trouble when I go hard to the T but it's pick your poison and focus harder and hope I miss. Ok to hit this serve U have to serve you should set up bout half way between serve mark and sideline so you clear low part of net. U give a little court position on your BH side but when you crack a great angle with velocity it's good cause he has to go over high net down the line or you have advantage on cross court return. If he doesn't get aced or flubs. Now if he starts cheating to that side you go up the T and he's screwed. Hope that helps. I'm too cheap to get one of those handy dandy pocket velo readers and don't know if they work. Reason I know I'm fast for my age is my kid played pro baseball and threw in round 94-95 not and serves easy high 120 to 130s. College players literally stand 15-16 ft back to get at it but he doesn't care or have time to train that hard. He can throw a football 60 yards in the air. So you can probably extrapolate the arm strength. I use to throw baseball mid 90s and football about 55yards. So you can extrapolate arm strength just another little technique variation. I'd recommend throwing a football with your students to develop arm strength, coordination, rotated cuff mobility and arm power. Mainly be intuitive and open minded. Cross training is amazing.

Wrong.... power and control both come from the biggest muscles...the wrist is so small that if you focus on it over legs core shoulders and arm in that order then any person inevitably will get injured ...maybe seriously....use the wrist as a fine tuning not as a primary source.
