Thank you so much for this- I’ve been trying to figure out how to cut a graver for this purpose for WEEKS and none of the information I found was clear enough to allow me to do it. This, I think, is what I needed. Understanding the function and mechanics of it makes it a lot easier to figure out the angles I need to create.

Hello, would i be able to make a graver with annealed blue steel or pure iron as both are a 4 on the mohs scale, silver is a 2.7 and opal is 5- 6.5.. will the graver cut the silver without damaging the opal? Im at a loss of how to bright cut an opal bezel without damaging the opal
@thediamondsetter6158 Жыл бұрын
the problem is that you have a sharp corner of the graver and the bezel has hardened due the process of hammering it down. SO - if you move the metal down that there is no gap between the stone and the bezel I use an old round bur (no carbide!!! ) or an HSS. I polish the parts where the graver could get in contact with the stone. also make sure the pressure is orientated against the bezel, not towards the stone. Just set fire opals - worst stone to set (for me) - there and also with a lot of other stones you have to bring the metal down the way you fix the stone not by hammering it all the way down, but by leaving a gap between so you can cut the bright cut without get in contact with the stone.

@@thediamondsetter6158 thank you so much for the reply, lots of useful info. No i would never use carbide on an opal haha! I'm cutting and setting Australian black opals which are a 5 to 6.5 on the mohs scale so i was thinking with silver being a 2 upto a 2.7 on the mohs and brass or softened steel being a 4 it may still cut the silver without damaging the opal?. Maybe i will try and let you know how i go keeping your tips in mind aswell

thank u so much for the video .what is te angle of the facet?
@thediamondsetter61585 жыл бұрын
Hey ! Thank you ! Around 45 ° - but it depends on the radius. Big round Stones only neet a second facett - sometimes 10° is absolutely enough.

Thank you for sharing.. do you cut with the belly of flat graver or face? Hard to see in the angle when you're cutting
@thediamondsetter61586 жыл бұрын
@@allenl9214Hey ! I used an onglette graver. You can see the face was sanded off one-sided. The facet does not change which side you use for the cut. you only "break the edge to create an clearance angle :)
@allenl92146 жыл бұрын
@@thediamondsetter6158 ah okay.. thanks.. think I understand now. so it's the angled face of an onglette graver. I was confused and thought it was the tiny green colored heel that prevents the marks
@thediamondsetter61586 жыл бұрын
access No - it is the GREEN FACET that avoid this marks - the green facet creates the clearance angle. In my opinion ther is only one available sharp edge to cut with 😁
