Thank you! Yes! Finally some one posted a video that goes through the whole process and not just skip through it as if people watching have done it before. Good video. I have a '72 Honda cb175 and I have fully restored it after it's been sitting sense '86 and I've spent hours on hours on the internet, even downloaded a Manuel and as always I get lost and confused. I know our bikes are different but they are set up basically the same. Mine is twin cylinder that fire at the same time so thankful you helped me with my problem. Once again great job on the video!

Great video. Points not opening at right point. And after hooking up the dwell as described, found out that the points were not hooked up to the base plate properly, washers were not in the proper place i guess shorting out points before the voltage was sent to the coil. Still not sure why if I turn the cam so the points are at the widest my line on flywheel is not at the T mark? I received a good spark on head and with starting fluid started right up. Thanks again. Now on to the carburetor.

Any advice as to how to get it to start after doing all this? Compression is 80PSI and I have bright blue spark. I just cannot get the engine to fire.
@Amotorcyclenut6 жыл бұрын
80 psi is a little low. you might have a valve or piston ring issue. Also carburetor needs to be right. You might get it to run.

From expirience its a good starting point, but buy a strobe light to set the timing accurately.

Very well explained. On my 1978 xl125 i have to rotate the plate like 1/6 of turn till points contacts. It means that they are worn out? And if i placed them there, engine is hard to start or will just to backfires. I check if the cam timing was off and it is not.
@Amotorcyclenut5 жыл бұрын
Make sure the advance is working correctly. Make sure you maintain the points gap when you rotate the plate, sometimes when you turn it , the points gap changes because the plate fits loosely in the head making it do what you describe.

So I am making this question to be sure...because if you do it wrong the XT400-500 will let you live with an ankle less... When the points starting open is when it sparks

Your cam might be 180 degrees off. You can fix that with out tearing everything apart by removing and rotating the small cam on the timing advance unit 180 degrees.

yes there is oil on the left side oil case. Digital meters seem to respond slow. If you meter has a continuity check with audio beep that will work well.

I have a 1978 XL350 that I can't quite figure out. I connected a test light (positive to wire coming from points, negative to ground) and it would not light up at any point in the rotation. However, I can get the plug to spark when kicking the bike over. Any advice?
@Amotorcyclenut5 жыл бұрын
A Honda XL350 uses a magneto type ignition that does not require a battery voltage to operate. Disconnect the connector from the points to the coil and use a multimeter set on the lowest ohms setting. Hook the red lead to the points wire and ground the black lead. Then you will be able to see when the points open and close.
@JWReynolds965 жыл бұрын
A Motorcycle Nut Thanks for the reply. I’m realizing I had a typo in my comment. I meant to say the test light would not light up at any point during the crank rotation. I can’t figure out why this would be.
@Amotorcyclenut5 жыл бұрын
@@JWReynolds96 There is no battery voltage in that type of ignition system. So you have to supply voltage to run the test light if you want to use a test light. Make sure you disconnect the points from the ignition coil FIRST!, or you'll be looking for a new coil.
@JWReynolds965 жыл бұрын
A Motorcycle Nut thank you! I’m used to working on a cb350, so I’m still figuring this system out. I’ll give the multimeter a shot.
@lilbusyman7 жыл бұрын
You state to rotate the flywheel until the TDC mark is lined up, and "that will be the position in which you want to set the gap of the points." This is a misstatement. At TDC the points will be just barely open. The gap needs to be measured when at its maximum which is well past TDC. I think you meant to say "rotate the engine until the points rubbing block is on the highest point of the advance cam." There is actually a small notch on the cam at that spot. Also, if the timing cannot be set without turning the points plate well beyond normal range it does NOT mean the points are worn out, it means the points gap is way off or else the advance is not returning to idle position, or the cam chain is way worn out.
@Amotorcyclenut7 жыл бұрын
what I said was rotate the fly wheel until TDC marked is line up and the points are open. That is the correct spot to set the gap of the points. That will be the high spot on the timing cam. The cam rotates one rev for every two revolutions of the crank., because its a four stroke engine. If you rotate the crank one rev from that position that will be the approximate location where the points fire the ignition coil. If your points will not adjusted open enough to to get the proper gap on the high spot of the cam they are worn out and you will not get a decent dependable spark.

I got a dt 250 yamaha and I need a dial indicator could I do without?
@Amotorcyclenut10 жыл бұрын
Simon De Asian Maybe, it depends on how creative you can be. The timing for a DT 250 is 3.2mm before top dead center. I have done it with a set of calipers through the spark plug hole. Not as accurate as a dial indicator but it can be done. Once you find the fire position make a fire mark on the flywheel and the case. Use tape and a pen to put your marks on first so if you mess up you can move them. Now you can check your timing with multimeter or a timing light. Once your happy with how it runs, scribe a mark on your fly wheel and case so they line up at the firing point. Next time you want to set your points it will be easy.
