Change the headlight to a 20 or 15. Tailight to a 10 or 15. Also run an in line fuse in that regulator wire in case it ever goes bad it doesn’t overcharge and fry your battery.
@galinvayov
@galinvayov Жыл бұрын
The charging wire must be connected to the other side of the 40 amp fuse. Away from the battery. For two main reasons: 1. The battery can provide a significant current, several hundred amperes. Therefore, it is connected to the rest of the wiring system through a fuse with a short cable. The unprotected part of the wiring is as short as possible. If we connect the charging wire on the battery side, we get a meter of wire going around the frame without any current protection. If shorted, this wire will turn hot red. 2. When the engine is running, the charging system is the main source of power. Each load receives power through its own fuse. One for the ignition, one for the tail lights, one for the headlight and one for the battery.

I have an electric start on a 1955 FLE. After a few starts, I started to realize that the generator wasn't charging the battery up to a sufficient level. I installed an extra ground wire from the regulator (type that fits on the end of the gen.) to the frame. Testing the battery with a meter at 1000-2000 RPMs, it was charging up to 15.75 amps! 👍😎

I’m sorry to hear this brotha. I’ve never had that issue with one of these batteries. I usually get about two seasons out of one before I have anything come up but that’s because I don’t usually remember to put it on a trickle charger or bring it inside from the cold. If properly maintained they can last much longer than that

I picked up a 98 dyna that I’m wanting to completely rewire. If I strip it down and remove the wiring harness, could I rewire it using this tutorial if I change to a points ignition? I’m wanting to delete all the bells, whistles, and hand control buttons off the bike.
@greasesgarage
@greasesgarage Жыл бұрын
Yes. If you go to points and mechanical advance you can do this exact setup. You’ll delete your ECM (sell it on eBay for $200), delete your voes and be able to replicate this setup. However, you’d need to wire in a starter and starter relay as your 98 probably doesn’t have a kicker like my bike does. Still would be deleting quite a bit of junk though, a great move 🤘🏼

Great Video! 👍🏻 I absolutely hate doing electrics! I've been gifted a 70's era (1974) Ironhead kickstart chopper that I'm giving new life too. It's going to be fairly basic as yours is, however I plan to run dual headlights up front, and dual tail/brake lights in the rear, plus a horn. Is it any more difficult to wire up dual lighting (front &/or rear) than what you've shown here? Thanks.

You also have two coils with with 2 plug leads from each coil. Look on the coils there are 2 low tension connections. If theyre spade terminals they are usually marked + and - You want a fused feed to that terminal, or if the coils have fly leads the male connectors. The other side of each coil is wired to one of the sets of points. One set does cylinders 1&4 the other set does cylinders 2&3. Seem to remember they're marked on the back plate? Connect the HT leads to the appropriate plugs.

In the process of rewiring my bike and don't wanna drop $250 on a simple wire kit . I have a question though, I noticed a lot of online builders use a 30Amp circuit breaker vs that fuse box. Any reason why you favor the fuse box vs circuit breaker? (03 XL1200)
@greasesgarage
@greasesgarage 2 ай бұрын
Great question. I use it because when a fuse pops, it’s popped. The circuit is broken. You know something went wrong and WHERE. With a circuit breaker, it trips during the issue then resets itself. All you know is your bike shut off and you were able to start it again a few minutes later but as far as where the issue came from, you can’t know for sure. Of course it’s nice to not have to buy fuses but most of the time nothing blows anyways, I’ve not replaced a fuse in over a year. But if and when it happens in the future, I want to know exactly where to start looking. Good luck and stay safe out there 🤘🏼

Good morning 🌅, This is how I use to wire my bike back in the 60/70s, Triumph Bonneville, Norton Dominator, and Commando, this was my first Chopper, then in the mid 90s , HD 1200 sportster, FXR 1340 , then 2000 Deuce, I had to sell it in 2019, and moved from the Uk to France, I have just bought a 2003 Deuce, bad problems with the alarm system, I’ve problems switching it off neutralising it, to the point where I have to remove the battery needs, I’ve spoken to HD, and they told me I cannot do anything with it apart from replacing some bits, Have you any idea how I can bypass the alarm system and away with the key fob?, So all I need to do is put the key in ignition turn it on and start it., this was my first one I had worked, never bothered with an alarm just had a very large chain and padlock, I don’t know anything about electronics. I can wire a bike where you suggest , as I’ve done it years ago, but there is a lot more to them nowadays, well over my head, and I’m now in my 70s, Keep up the great work if you can help be appreciated, France,

It’s definitely possible to wire yours like mine but you wouldn’t want to delete your ECM unless you were going to points ignition. Points ignition and kickstart only is why I’m able to delete basically everything besides four wires. But between this video and the one that shows you how to add electric start I could get your wiring simplified quite a bit

@@greasesgarage okay, thank you for your help, Have problems getting parts from HD , I have only had the bike for 2 months, I purchased it from the UK, and imported it into France, I knew when I purchased it that there was some issues mainly backfiring through the carburettor, I’m now completely stripped the carb and put all new jets in, the same that was previously on my old bike, As I mentioned, it’s got a problem with the alarm system, Hopefully, I can sort it from what you have been telling me, I knew that I had to replace final drive belt, but I’ve now looked at the pulleys and they are shot, obviously the belt has been too tight, Just been quoted nearly €1000 for a power of pulleys, which seems excessive, And I have since found out mainly this morning, as I am slowly going through things clean them, getting prepared to put things together when I do finally get all the parts and gaskets, et cetera, been told anywhere between 4 to 6 weeks, And by the looks of it, they’re in a primary case has been repainted at some point, especially as you can see black paint on the inside of the primary case, and you can definitely see a line where somebody has cleaned the coating off on the outside to a certain point then sprayed it, I did not pay a lot of money for the bike just over £5000, In some respect, I thought I had a good deal, but the way things are going it might have been cheaper for me to purchase something over here, but I did find that they were a lot more expensive here than they are in the UK, I’ve already paid import duty tax, paid for a conformity form, I still got to get the bike registered and I’ve still get the bike through control techniques, similar to an MOT in the UK, Already put two new tires on the bike, What I now seen of the bike going through it, it’s obvious that somebody’s been inside it, but haven’t done proper job, extremely filthy dirt mud et cetera, so before I take anything apart, I’m having to rush it all down, sorry I’m jabbing on a bit, Hope you have a great weekend, France

If you buy a factory service manual for that bike it’ll have a wiring diagram or you could probably find it online. That would give you the stock colors of the wires but if someone rewired it some of them may not match anymore

What's your thought on using those automatic reset circuit breakers?
@greasesgarage
@greasesgarage 7 ай бұрын
A lot of people swear by them but I’ve never used them. Might be my own ignorance but I never understood the concept. If they auto reset, how do you know where the problem circuit is? If it trips and the bike shuts down and it resets, you’re sort of left without a starting point. Maybe I’m missing something though?

All are possible yea. Easiest is a hidden switch. Would go between your battery and the fuse block I show in this video. Right where my key switch goes. This switch would just turn on/off the power to your block which powers everything else

If you wanted turn signals where and how would you wire them? On the Ganged box?

Yes you would use those unused ports for the signals, you would wire a turn signal relay between them as well which is what tells the bulb to flash like a turn signal light does

Ive got the 30 amp breaker bolted to my frame and it seems to ground out sometimes as my whike system will go dead and if i wiggle the 30 amp itll cone back. Is that even possible or is it something else?
@greasesgarage
@greasesgarage 6 ай бұрын
When we talk about intermittent problems like that my first thought is always loose terminals. A loose battery ground, a loose wire somewhere in the ignition circuit etc. I would start by wiggling every terminal connection to ensure nothing is loose. If you find nothing, pull the breaker off the frame and see if it continues to happen. But having it on the frame doesn’t seem like something that would cause that issue sporadically. It would either be grounded all the time or none of the time.

Do you need that 30amp from the battery to the fuse block if you are using a capacitor instead?
@greasesgarage
@greasesgarage 2 ай бұрын
Hmm, that’s a good question actually. I ran a capacitor on my xs650 but I’ve never seen one on a Harley. My thought would be that you’d still want one anyways because capacitors discharge very quickly and you’re using that fuse as a protection against overcharge

When you say the hot wire is going through a 30 amp fuse, why does it look like a circuit breaker? Is it in fact a fuse and not a circuit breaker?
@greasesgarage

You’re correct, that’s a circuit breaker. It functions very similar to a fuse in this application. Many stock bikes will come with them so you can reuse them for this section or add in a 30amp fuse if you prefer 👍🏼
