Thanks Charlie. They are excellent videos. Just a question - if you set the heating schedule for the radiators say to be at a certain temp between 0500 and 0700 and then a certain temp at 1700 - 2300, do you just set those times in the schedule and in between 0700 and 1700, the radiators will go off?
@charlieshooter6 жыл бұрын
You would need to set a schedule at 0700 to a low temperature (say 14/15deg) so it wont trigger the boiler, and then it will stay at this all day until you set another schedule at 1700 to say, 20deg. Hope that makes sense? I am going to do a video on that because I've had so many questions asking about it.

Please do Charlie! I am struggling to get my ageing head around this Nest! So it appears you technically cannot turn the heating off for a defined period, just turn it down! Keep those videos coming - Nest owe you something!

Brilliant video Charlie, crazy how there are no easy read instructions with the Nest out the box. Your programming video is a lifesaver, but you do not mention the programming of water function only, which would have been very helpful. Not a criticism, would just have made it even more useful for me personally. We have moved into a new house with the Nest already fitted and found it baffling until watching you video. Many thanks. I have had my Nest for some time now. Was on a 2nd Gen and went to the 3rd Gen too. I had a schedule set and I also used the Away feature, it worked great. We would leave the house at 8:30, Nest would detect no movement in the home and go into AWAY mode which would drop the house to its AWAY Temperature. Then at 5 PM, the schedule would kick in, the house would start warming up so when we arrive back home at about 5:45, our house is at our desired temperature. LIVE WAS GREAT!!! THEN... the AUGUST UPDATE HAPPENED!!! Now we leave our home and the NEST goes to AWAY, now called ECO MODE. BUT!!!!! Our schedule for heating the house at 5 PM will no longer kick in and start warming our home since the device went into ECO mode. The only way to get the Nest out of ECO mode is to either walk in front of the thermostat (but I am not home) or launch the app and manually turn off ECO (SO now I have to remember to launch my app everyday) The new update makes the Nest ECO temperatur overide your set schedule. Now, if I ever forget to launch my Nest app, I always walk into my home and it is FREEZING...(winter time now) I cant wait until the summer time now where there will be no Air Conditioning running because I forgot to launch my app. Our 40 dollar old thermostat could at least have our home nice and cozy for us. All Nest needs to do to fix this for us is please create a switch, toggle or something where we can still use the cool Away/eco feature, but still have the scheduled times work for us.
@charlieshooter6 жыл бұрын
I see where you're coming from! You could maybe turn eco off so it never kicks in? However that sort of takes away one of the Nest's best properties! We use an app called "Coming Home" which creates a geo-fence at a radius around the property and when we come into that it knocks eco off and the heating on. Not sure if it's still available though.

Hi Charlie, good video. Is there a way to schedule a switch off time i.e. set it to come on at 5.45am at 20 degrees but switch off again at 7.45 or does this happen automatically when we leave the house?
@charlieshooter7 жыл бұрын
+Jean Smith If you set a schedule of 20deg at 5.45am and then another schedule of, say, 17deg at 7.45am, that will in effect turn off the heat at that time. It will go to your Eco temperature after it has realised you're not there though, if you've set that up.

The Nest has learned that it takes 3hr30 to heat the room to 21deg from 17deg it seems (which is a long time to be fair!) If you want it to just come on at 6.30am on the dot you need to turn of 'True Radiant' in settings. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the review. Did you have a view on whether it takes more energy to maintain a steady 20deg say, rather than letting the house cool down and then reheat. I assume there is a tipping point of frequency and duration
@charlieshooter6 жыл бұрын
I'm still unsure on which method is the most beneficial. One thing I will say though is don't let the house cool down too much, because everything starts to feel cold....the furniture, the walls etc and then it does take a while to warm up properly again. We don't let our thermostat drop below 17deg now and the max we have it is 21deg.

If I was looking to set up my schedule so that the heating was only on in the evening, how would I go about doing that? Say from 8pm til 11:30pm and then off through the night and the rest of the day? I have just had mine installed and currently have a temperature set at 8pm but there is no 'end time' so I feel like it will just be on all day at said temperature.

+Isaac P Using the example you give what you would do is set the Nest to, say, 20deg at 8pm, then set it to, say, 15deg at 11.30pm. Then copy that to each day. The house isn't likely to drop to 15deg so effectively the heating won't come on until 8pm every day. Does that make sense?

Hi Charlie, your videos are very intuitive. I need some help please; this whole system has gone over my head. I've have never had a stat in the house house and basically I need to programme the heating to the following settings as we are only home for these hours: Mon to Fri 5:15am -8:30am Mon to Sun: 17:00-19:00 Sat: 6:30-8:30 Sun: 7:15-10am the way I understand this is otherwise if I set it to say 20 degrees it will keep switching on until it gets to that which would then be a waste of energy as there will be no beneficiary at home. Can you please assist?
@charlieshooter7 жыл бұрын
+Nitin Parmar Firstly....thank you, I try to make them as simple to follow as possible. Ok, here we go. Few options..... 1. Let it learn the schedule by turning it up and down at the times you need it and don't need it until it learns your schedule. Not the most accurate way though really. 2. Set it to 20deg constant and use Nest Home/Away Assist so when it recognises you're not there it will go down to your Eco Temperature you've set. Eco Temperature is the temperature you want it to heat the house to when you're not there. Again not completely accurate and it seems like you'll know when you will and won't be there so..... 3. Set the schedule as shown in the video. Set the first temp/time point on a Mon at 5.15am at 20deg. Then set the second time/temp point at 8.30am at say 16 or 17deg. Then set another temp/time point for 17.00 at 20deg and another at 19.00 at 16 or 17deg. Copy this to all days and then go in and alter Sat and Sun morning. The last one is your best bet for what you want. Hope that's clear. 😀

If you turn up the Nest in between, it will stay at 22°C until the next schedule point. Doing this will not alter the schedule straight away, but if the Nest 'learns' that you do it regularly it MAY change the schedule using auto-schedule. You can turn that feature off though.

charlieshooter thanks that makes sense! What I don’t understand is how it knows to follow your schedule if you’re away. So if you have a schedule set for it to come on at 5pm but you’re not at home (but set it to come on at 5 so that’s it’s warm for you coming home at 6) it won’t follow the schedule because you’re not at home. But then if you happen not to come home until 9pm one night it might have heated the house from 5pm when there was nobody there. So when will it follow a schedule and when will it ignore the schedule an save on energy?
@charlieshooter7 жыл бұрын
+R K If you're not there and it's set itself to Eco, then it won't follow the schedule. I've got another app on my phone called "Coming Home" that tells my Nest when we are nearly home so it will turn it on ready when we are x no. of miles away.

+Angie Mills It wont automatically know he has gone to bed. It will set the temp at 20deg until the next scheduled point which could be the morning. Even if you just use it to heat, your heater is far more efficient when its not cycling on and off every few minutes... ive heard estimates that it uses 6 times more energy if you were to let your house cool down to a certain temp and then run it and heat it up 10 degrees or so.

Umm I'm pretty sure it does. It's called heat and cool. You set the temps for both cool and heat.
@CurvedSlightly5 жыл бұрын
It kind of does this, you just didn't know it. It's called error correction, so it doesn't actually maintain an exact temperature as it would be flicking on and off every 10 seconds. So it heats and cools past and before the temperature set. When it goes below or above a certain temperature it kicks in again or shuts off.

If I want the heating to come on at 7am at 20 degrees, but do not want the boiler to fire up earlier so the house is at 20 degrees by 7am, do I turn off the True Raidiant option in the settings ? It's just that the boiler is in the kids room and I don't want it waking them up 5 in the morning ? Also if I turn off the True Radiant setting is the Nest still smart enough to switch off the boiler if for example it knows the house will continue to heat up to the desired temp using the radiators in the house ? Thanks
@charlieshooter6 жыл бұрын
+Owen Lloyd Its not something I've actually fiddled with on ours...although maybe I should because the boiler is in our bedroom! Just had a quick look into it, and yes, turning it off would stop it coming on until the time you set. However, there's another setting within it called Max Duration which basically enables you to stop it preheating during the night. You can set this right down to 0. Only thing with that is, I don't know what it classes as 'night' so it'd be trial and error. Doing the latter means the Nest will still switch off the boiler early, knowing the house will continue to heat up using the radiators like you said. All that is adjustable in the app or on the Nest itself. Hope that helps!

You can do as many as you like, but they do have to be an hour apart at least.

how does the nest work for hot water?
@charlieshooter Жыл бұрын
I've not used it for hot water myself but someone might chip in and answer. It is when you have a hit water tank to schedule when that is heated.....i think!

I think I might have made a mistake buying the nest. I work a 3 shift rotation and thought I could program individual weeks to match my shift pattern.
@charlieshooter6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately you can only set the schedule for a week and then it repeats. It will know when you're not there though and put it into Eco mode so it doesn't heat the house when it's empty.

My Nest seems to go off on it's own sometimes getting colder than what I set. Do you have any ideas why?
@charlieshooter7 жыл бұрын
+CapeCodBelle I haven't come across that problem to be fair. Is the schedule set correctly? Is the radiator thermostat in the room the Nest is in fully open?

I've not had that problem. Maybe try uninstalling the app and reinstalling it...that may work?

Is it possible to set the Nest to "turn off" at a certain time?
@charlieshooter7 жыл бұрын
+Arlene R If you mean to turn off the heating then yes you can set it to go off at a certain time, but if you mean does it turn off completely then no. Although while no one is around it goes into sleep mode.

good video but you didnt mention how to operate the domestic hot water system. can you give us a clue please. Alan Beasley
@charlieshooter7 жыл бұрын
+alan beasley If I'm honest....as I my set up is with a combi-boiler and I haven't got a hot water tank, I've never looked into it. As I understand it, it's very similar to setting the heating although I think you can only do it twice a day, or 'boost' it whenever required. Thanks for watching.

Between the specific times that you set, does the temperature always stay the same.
@charlieshooter6 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. It might drop by half a degree or one degree, but the thermostat takes care of that.

How does it know when to go of ?
@charlieshooterАй бұрын
@@sarahjames2525 Like any thermostat, it detects what temperature the room is at and then turns off the boiler.

I don't think the next actually saves me any money (or uses less energy since gas prices are through the roof) I had a manual thermostat before which came on and went off at times I had programmed. Now I am bright, but confused. Its as though the boiler is always on but only running when it is maintaining a temperature. So when it hits the temperature it has on off control to maintain the heat. Has anyone done a study to determine if it is more energy efficient to have your boiler on at a lower temperature all day long so you maintain a steady state and your property holds its thermal mass. I find my house (well insulated) take a while to heat up and cools down pretty quickly when working at temperature extremes. ie 6am be 20Deg, at 9am, be 15 degrees. at 4pm be 20 deg at 8pm be 15 degrees. If I set the thermostat to say 17 degrees all day would that be more energy efficient I wonder?

Apparently not....Martin Lewis has done some kind of write up on it recently! 🤷🏽♂️
