Great video. I have a Silva compass from Canada, had it for years and never had to adjust the declination (22 degrees West) as I used it throughout Nova Scotia and never had to change it. I took it with me to Scotland to hike the West Highland Way (2 degrees East) and had a “seniors’ moment” on how to adjust it. I had forgotten about the little screwdriver in the lanyard. It’s adjusted now and I’m ready.

Hi , I have just been given this exact compass yesterday as gift, for an expensive compass you would at least think the cardinal points - North , south, east, west would much more visible - orange on orange! , like they are on much cheaper silva compasses , black on clear , or white on black etc. They really are difficult see. Any thoughts ?
@verysurvival7 жыл бұрын
I agree it is a harder compass to read than my cheapest type by Silva!!! On the other hand it has more glow in the dark markings so they had to make the markers kinda fat to show up good when they are glowing. but it should have other markings that also are more precise in daylight conditions. I am going to make a review comparing the cheapest Silva, the Ranger which is a bit more expensive and the Expedition which is the most expensive. Basically most expensive doesn't always equal BEST in all respects!
@Mark-sx1ur7 жыл бұрын
Hi again , yeh its looking that way . I may very very carefully paint these areas black.

@@verysurvival It is terrible design, for a compass this expensive. Very annoying. I only read this comment after buying the compass (Expedition S). I'm thinking of returning it for this flaw.. it makes the compass hard to read. Same thing with lining up the degrees on the dial. I do have a question for you: how useful (in your opinion) is the mirror, when you're out navigating in the hills? (I will do most of my navigating in the Irish hills). Seems to me that opening and closing the lid all the time is a hassle. Also, I have doubts about this compass being fully waterproof in heavy rain?
@zrig122 күн бұрын
I’ve noticed that Silva has stopped using the tick mark to adjust declination. Back in the day, it was a breeze - just turn the screw until the tick mark lined up with your declination. No need to even orient the compass. I’ll have to see if this is the same when my 16DCL arrives in a couple of days.

its taking me ages to get to that video about this . so to cut a long story short if your were trying to walk a perfectly straight line, after 3 KM you would be about 300m wrong if the declination error was 5 degrees.if you worked it out mathematically with perfectly straight lines it would be 261 m wrong, I like to think of it as about 100 m wrong per each 1 KM travelled since that is close enough for in the head calculations...

Super clear and easy to follow...just did mine for my local area here in Oz. My question now is, does anything change as to orienting a map doing map to grid or grid to map conversions ? Or do you even need to do that now ?
@verysurvival Жыл бұрын
You just navigate without making further conversions. Because By adjusting your compass you avoid manually having to add or subtract for magnetic deviation. So you can navigate faster. That is the advantage of an adjustable compass. Basically you have set your compass to permanently point to map north , so now your map and your compass are always the same

Its the clinometer arrow, you can measure the slope with it. Simply rotate the compass ring so that W (270d) is facing straight ahead on the plate, then hold the compass on its side at eye-level and rotate the entire compass to match the direction of slope (the little red arrow will move freely). You can then read the slope angle from where the little red arrow is pointing to on the compass scale.

@verysurvival6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thatis interesting mate. according to wikipedia. they should not be sold in Canada, but I guess that can be wrong or you have got one that has snuck in under the radar. Wikipedia says: North American trademark disputeAfter the founding of Silva USA in 1946 and Silva Ltd. in Canada two years later, both affiliates were later acquired by Johnson Wax Associates, later Johnson Camping, Inc., and by 1985, Johnson Worldwide Associates (JWA). From 1980, JWA had imported Swedish-made compasses manufactured by Silva Production AB for sale in North America.In 1996, a decision by Silva Production AB to end sole distribution of its Swedish-made Silva-brand compasses by Silva USA led to a court battle the following year between JWA and Silva Production AB (Silva Sweden AB).[9]In 1998, JWA and Silva Production AB of Sweden reached a settlement whereby JWA retained the exclusive right to sell compasses under its Silva trademark in North America, made by unnamed manufacturers.[10] JWA also retained the North American rights to some product names such as Ranger, Polaris, 1, 2, 3 and others commonly used and recognized in the U.S. and Canadian markets and made popular during the time Silva Production AB was manufacturing Swedish-made Silva compasses for JWA in North America.[11] JWA was eventually renamed Johnson Outdoors, Inc.For its part, Silva Production AB/Silva Group retained the right to manufacture and sell compasses, GPS tools, and other navigational products under its Silvatrademark outside the United States and Canada, as well as market its Swedish-made compasses and GPS tools in North America under the Brunton, Elite, and Nexus brands. The Swedish firm also retained the right to state on Nexus packaging and in the Nexus catalog that Nexus compasses were made by Silva Production AB, but did not retain the right to advertise this fact.[11]In 2009 Fiskars sold Brunton Inc. to Fenix Outdoor AB of Sweden, and in consequence, Silva Production AB stopped exporting Silva of Sweden compasses to North America under the Brunton and Nexus brands, and halted further imports of Brunton products to markets outside North America under the Silva brand. Currently, Silva of Sweden AB no longer distributes any of its compass products to the USA or Canadian markets.

Go to silva dot se. (I think it is in the press release section ) In Oct 2017 Silva Sweden announced they had regained ownership of the Silva trade name, for N. America, meaning both the USA and Canada. And starting Jan 2018 they would again start importing and selling their products in N. America. Now I will no longer have to order my Silva Sweden compasses from Ireland or Germany, (for some odd reason Amazon UK wouldn't ship them to the USA.) And I will also be able to order models with scales made for common US topographic map scales. I just purchased a Ranger 2.0 Quad compass. It is marked Designed in Sweden, made in China. A little surprised it wasn't made in Sweden. However. I know Daiwa has some excellent fishing rods made in China. So I doubt there will be any quality problems with the made in China compass models. Big companies that make it a priority to produce high quality products seem to have their own people in the China factories insuring that the quality control is very good. It's companies that aren't focused on making a quality product, that just want a certain type of product to sell, that buy shoddy made products made in China. The Silva Expedition compasses are great compasses. I have both the base plate mode and the S mirror model. I wondered why the compass ring has a flat , straight, part along the edge of the bezel ring. I couldn't figure out a purpose for it. My favorite Silva mode is the Expedition 54 360 prism sighting ( I think recently replaced by Expedition 55 360 model) I can't find them on the Silva se website, but if I do an internet search I can find a link to them on the silva se website, and at some retailers online shops. Joel at Silva explained to me that customers had requested the compass bezel be made larger in diameter. Which they did, but then noticed the edge of the ring covered the ruler marks. The solution to keep the ruler marks from being covered by the edge of the bezel ring was to make a flat part to the edge of the bezel ring. The bezel doesn't cover the ruler marks on the S model, but it does on the non mirrored model.

Fixed it myself. It's Quite easy. Turn the compass upside down and inspect the octagonally shaped black retention wheel. The wheel has 8 thin springy blades each with a pin overlapping the baceplate. With a small screew driver deflect each pin inturn to release compass assembly through the baseplate. Gently work in clockwise direction applying slight pressure to ensure each pin in turn passes over the baseplate rim. Voila - it is now out and the direction arrow can be reset to any angle E/W.. Pop the capsule back after setting declination as you wish.

Once declinated, you want to leave the bezel where 360 is at 12 o’clock, correct? You would only change the bezel while marching, but while orienting in the map you still want 360 at 12 o’clock? In other words, change the arrows beneath the needle to match, but DON’T rotate the bezel ring, right?

So my map says true north is 1°04' East of grid North, magnetic North is estimated 1°24' and 1°23' West of grid North. Annual change is 12' east. What numbers do I go off. Thanks in advance
@verysurvival6 жыл бұрын
Hi, first thing is for basic navigation with your map and compass you can ignore the 'map says true north is 1°04' East of grid North', you might need that number if you had two different maps and wanted to compare them and for some reason use both. The important declination number is is 1°24' and 1°23' West of grid North for navigating with that map and a compass. there are 60' in a degree, so your declination is just a little less than about 1.5° West, which is probably easier to use as an adjustment figure than degrees and minutes. Good news for you, Practically speaking 1.5 degrees is such a small declination you can ignore it for land navigation, you will come across a landmark to correct your route long before you get lost due to a 1.5 degree error. with a small hand held compass even measuring a bearing to 1.5 degrees is basically not possible anyway. if you can take a bearing with 2 degrees error you are doing about as well as can be expected. with a 12' change east , it means that it will take 5 years (5 * 12 = 60 minutes = 1 degree) for the declination to move 1 degree east, so if your map date is 2018 in 5 years the mag declination will be 0°24' and 0°23. In 7 years the Magnetic north will be the same as grid north, which is cool... the reason it says 1°24' and 1°23 is because the declination even varies on your map slightly. To know the exact declination where you surveyors use instruments to measure it exactly, so the numbers are saying is that that is the average kinda declination on the area the map covers.
@leeharbord6 жыл бұрын
That's pretty in depth but I think I get ya. Lol thanks for the response, you've put me at ease great video thanks for sharing.
@verysurvival6 жыл бұрын
90% of the time you can ignore declination for land navigation, it's important if you are navigating a boat because you travel hundreds of miles without seeing anything. but on land you will come across a land mark, like a river , a hill, a train track , a road long before you get lost because of it. and as said accurate measuring 1 degree is not even possible.

Interesting to see that as you presented the silva provided screwdriver to the screw in order to make the adjustment, you can clearly see the compass needle reacting to the metal and actually moving as you are about the turn the screw...!!! not great from silva as in reality the declination will be far less than the 20 degree example used and the needle movement was probably sufficient to make the whole exercise redundant..!! I think I'd still prefer to work out the magnetic variation manually, as we did before this screw arrangement, and go from there..All of that said, great video and thanks for putting it up as it has clarified for me that fact that I think i will buy the Silva expedition 4 instead and do without the faff of the declination setting.

Cool. That you added the update in the video description. Here is a link announcing acquiring N. America distribution rights. tinyurl.com/Silva-se-acquired-N-A-distrib And announces 2 new global needle compass models preview.tinyurl.com/Silva-se-2-new-global-compass I have both the Expedition base plate model and the Expedition S mirror sighting compass model. You might notice a flat / straight area along the edge of the outer edge of the compass bezel ring. Below is an explanation of it's purpose. I was puzzled about what it's purpose is. Actually I thought maybe some bit had broken off. But Joel at Silva Sweden explained to me people requested the bezel be make larger in diameter for more precise setting. Which they did, but then noticed the bezel was so wide it would cover the ruler marks on the base of the compass. For a solution to that problem they added the straight area on one side of the bezel rim so the ruler divisions are not covered when the bezel ring straight area is turned to align with that area of the ruler. It is not a problem on the Expedition S because the base is a little bit wider than the base on the standard Expedition model. But both models seem to used the same compass housing. fwiw, I just ordered a Silva Ranger 2.0 quad compass silva.se/product/compasses/us-compasses/ranger-2-0-quad/ The packaging says designed in Sweden, made in China. I don't think being made in China will be a quality problem. Large companies that are focused on the quality of their products seem to have their people in the Chinese factories ensuring the quality control is done to a high standard. I know that Daiwa has some excellent fishing rods made in China. Other companies that just want to sell a low cost fishing rod have rods made in China lacking good design and high quality control standards that are not very good quality. I expect the Silva compasses made in China will also be held to a high standard of production by Silva Sweden.

keep learning keep extending your range of techniques once previous ones are fully accomplished acheived or intellectually learned ingrained in you fully learnt it is better to know less than more!! but not know it really accurately or well enough than know more but not have that navigational know how to be able to execute it properly often when it is most needed? by familiarising yourself regularly with map n compass diff nav techniques concepts practising it in ideal conds then going out to do so in less than ideal conds and see if it feels you perform in the precise same way!!? i can bet you that you we all needs to up our game when it comes to learning nav techniques properly that includes if you lose yer only map n compass aswell as the more advanced techniques with it!! some of the orienteering modern methods are excellent at attaining your next line of attack or target destination using terrain wisely its well.worth a dip into their range of fast moving techniques aswell ad more advanced methods of mt navigation incl altitude or changes in terrain snow ice inclination descent ascent etc as it all makes up the bigger picture you need to read the terrain well & adapt yourself constantly to be a good navigator its often a minute by minute decision making exercise to be pinpoint with your navigating aswell as lots of practise of diff techniques in all weathers & not always just the ideal conds! as doing the 2 are like chalk n cheese!

I don't think you need to do this by taking the magnetic needle into account at all. Just use the base of the arrow and the declination scale. Was wondering why you didn't mention what brand Swedish Silva compasses are sold under in USA and Canada... and realised they haven't been for almost ten years. Obviously I don't keep up with this stuff nowadays!
@verysurvival7 жыл бұрын
The base of the arrow is open ended. So You have to position the open end over the dec point you want. You can do it that way but it is not as accurate. If Silva just added another mark to show the middle point it would be the best way of doing it

I don’t think the setting of declination on this compass is very good. I think the cheapest basic Silva base plate compass is easier to read

My experience is that humans are actually very good at that kind of precision. In this case I think our eyes more than match what we can achive with normal screwdriver without a long lever attached.

when setting your declination as you say get rid of everything that can be possibly magnetic arounds you incl moving away from boulders hollow ground or large trees mouths of caves etc a good place to set declination is on the forest floor on dry leaves or open areas of grass with map and compass aligned allowed to settle evenly no bias no uneveness dead level as possible as regards best methods of seeking declination from a map id advise caution here!! as not everybodys maps are always fully bang up to date you can calculate the years since map was first printed to asess the current declination however a website does exist that gives you your precise degree or mils of declination east or west of the olgonic line!! which is the equivalent to the gmt base zero mean line but in purely magnetic lines!! field not the true or grid north lines the olgonic line moves around so your amount of degrees to add or minus will also vary aprox every 3-4 5years before significantly affecting your regional navigation if you are planning to explore a new country or area it does actually pay to look up this website as it gives the very latest up to date info and all you do is click on the map where you intend to do most of your activities like google earth viewfinder icon it then comes up with all the relevant info incl your distances away from the olgonic line east or west which can so vary enormously even town to town area to area within the same gen vicinity depending upon how far to the east or west you situate yourself away from the olgonic line to do your navigating in once set if you stick to that setting in your gen area it should be good for between 3 -5yrs depending upon the rate pace of change in your area the olgonic line is currently lying over missouri way ish it is quite surprising how even over relatively shorter distances that the declination settings can vary so if you do actually want to acheive pinpoint accuracy a close eye on these settings always needs to be taken into advanced considerations before navigating your way around as even a 4° degree parallax error can put your bearings out very seriously!! even over relatively short distances or in poor visibility i will try to look up the name of the website so as viewers can look it up for themselves it covers everywhere usually ive often had to correct peoples declination after using a 1953 map even 60s 70s 80s so up to date info is what is required as you can often find that in a place where you once had to add declination you now may well have to substract it just because of the drifts of the olgonic line east or west of earths magnetic flow pattern fields over time!! :)

In Australia we call it magnetic variation not declination. I watched the video because I'd never heard of declination. So different parts of the world have different names for the same thing.

Great video..... But according to Wikipedia, some time in 2018, likely after you made this video, Silva/Sweden reacquired the north American rights...should be easy to put a call out bubble on your video stating such. Thanks for the video... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silva_compass

Magnetic declination changes every 4 months or so...HOW can you have a PERMANENT dec setting with a mechanical, magnetic device? Have you personally altered the Physics of our Universe?
