how to set engine timing with a test light

1. put the ignition on
2. clip test light alligator clip to the distributor side connector
3. earth or ground test light and slightly loosen distributor mount bolt
4. turn engine timing makes to manufactures specification
5. slowly turn distributor until light comes on
6. turn engine backwards slightly and check light coming on at the correct setting
7. tighten mount bolt and recheck that light comes on at the right timing marks

Thanks Wanted to make sure I was doing it correctly Working on a 1954 Chevy 210 Sedan 235 6 cylinder No timing mark on front pulley, only small triangle mark on flywheel.

How did you move the crankshaft just by turning the belt?

I have an MSD ignition system and could not replicate this simple procedure. Do you know if the MSD is interrupting the signal? I spun the crank 360 degrees to see if it'd hit on any of the plugs and nothing. Suggestions? I'm stumped, because technically, the coil hits the distributor before the MSD box.

hi you connect the alligator clip to the negitive side of the coil (low voltage) not the high side leads, hope this helps

Does the alligator clip need to be connected to the condenser/wire or does the wire need to unplugged from the condenser first and the test light connected to just the wire coming off the negative post on the coil?

hi thanks for your comments, the test ight only works on distributors with points, you need a timing light if the vehicle has an elctronic distributor. hope this helps
