Hi I received my RXA6A and set it up yesterday WOW. I first set the speaker system up manually, I set up my Golden Ears Triton 2+ floor standers to large and frequency cross over to 80Hz. But when I ran the YPAO, the system changed my speakers to small and changed the frequency to120 Hz? ? and yes I had my bass set up with extra bass which I have now turned off. So far very impressed, I have now removed my near new Cambridge CXA81 out of the system and will probably sell it. THOSE WHO SAY YOU CANT GET HIGH PERFORMANCE AUDIO OUT OF AN AVR NEED TO TAKE A SECOND LOOK. This receiver certainly satisfies my audio appetite.

Thanks Gene. I had used Extra Bass feature on my old Yamah RXV677 receiver.. But since your previous video relating to Pure Direct, my setup with two channel stereo with subwoofer now involves sending music via external DAC and Phono stage to analogue inputs on the receiver, turning on Pure Direct and connecting a REL T7x subwoofer via high level Neutrik Speakon interconnect cable (hence using my receiver as a power amp only in this setup).. Stereo music is sounding so pure to my ears!!

You can access a web-interface in the receiver by typing the IP-address followed by /setup/. This is a really easy way to make changes on the fly without having to bother with the onscreen GUI. This works for a lot of Yamaha receivers. And no, no problem with the extra bass setting, got the hang of it way back when setting up a (then) brand new RX-V2600.

I have the Aventage Rxa 3050, when I set my mains to large I couldnt get hardly any bass out of my sub, so I changed to small then it worked well. But I also went into the setting and send all the low signal to the sub. ( 80hrz) So all my mains play highs, mids it sounds great. ( Klipsch rp 280s). Figured let the sub handle all low so mains focus on highs & mids on a 2way speaker. Setting the speakers took a time playing with tow in & so on, now great center imaging, I swear sometimes I get up to make sure my center speaker is off and it is but it sounds like it is playing. Wow, I havent found the boosted bass but hearing your video on it Im glad I didnt. Specially after seeing the graph you put up, what a mess in measuements. 😱 I like your channel because its mostly scienced based, not subjective opinion based. Thxs

This was a great video and very informative. I know it's a bit older but just wanted to leave a quick note. I'm only running smaller bookshelves (B&W) on an older Yamaha receiver, but I found this info very interesting. I've had the speakers set to small and crossover set to 80hz for a while. Decided to give this a try and set the speakers to large with extra bass ON, wow, very noticeable difference. Definitely not full range capable speakers, but I really prefer the "fullness" of the sound like this. I also only have a single smaller SVS subwoofer so the extra bass up front really helps with blending the low frequencies into the sound stage. I'm not sure how graphs would measure this but I really like this sound, especially at mid to lower volumes. I also live in a condo so there's no reference levels happening here by any means, and this sounds great at my listening level. Thanks Gene.

Interesting!! I have a Yamaha AVR RXA4A paired with front Klipsch Towers. I just enabled the Extra Bass along with another setting in the same menu for Clarity, and I found that when I turned the front speakers to LARGE, the speakers lost Bass and gained Highs. When I turned the same front speakers to SMALL, the extra Bass is heard and felt and the Highs are blended in very nice. I kept the front speakers as SMALL as I can definitely hear and feel the difference as opposed to setting them to LARGE. I tried this back and forth and even the Warden (Wife) approved. I like Big Bass and I cannot Lie!

I am having the same results with my Klipsch Towers and my Yamaha RX-V479. Music sounds much better with towers set to small and Extra Bass turned on. It seems to tame the highs a bit to a level I enjoy and the bass sounds good to me. It's odd that people think this is wrong as Yamaha clearly states in their manual that Extra Bass offers enhanced low-frequency response even with small speakers.

@@whoofman2013 nobody is saying it's "wrong", the video is just showing you what it does to the frequency response. If you like how it sounds with the speakers set to small and extra bass on, use it. For right now I just have to manually turn it back up to 0 just so I can hear the subwoofer and the subwoofer can do subwoofer things. If not you can clearly hear its not doing anything. But this video did answer why my sub was on sometimes and wasn’t at other times. Thought my sub was going out. I had the Sony receiver before and it seemed easier to use. At least for the optimization part. Still learning this receiver.

Thanks Gene, I totally agree, Extra Bass was not necessary for my Topline Aventages (RX-A3080/3060/3050) since it led to a boomy bass. On the other hand, I have a specific case where it helps: I am driving an 2 way system (4 inch in closed cabinet) in my bathroom with the lower end RX-A660. Speakers are lacking of bass from about 130 Hz and lower and there is no place for a subwoofer. Thus I am using high pass for the small speakers, subwoofer 'on' (though there is no subwoofer connected, but you cannot set main speakers to large without subwoofer) and extra bass 'on'. This kind of compensates the lack of bass. Furthermore 4 inches are protected by a 40 Hz filter which acts like a kind of subsonic filter. Ok, it's not a real audiophile sond in my bathroom, but fun and a much more linear frequency curve than withour extra bass (I should check it with REW). Looking forward to seeing the results of RX-A6A measurements, especially about the Low Frequency Mode. I cannot believe what Phil Shea told aboout it: LFM just identifies problematic modes and consumers will have to correct it themselves with REW equipment and PEQ?? That's not user friendly and no fully automatic YPAO. Regards, Roland

They sound much better with Extra Bass on (all speaker on). Sometimes I also add the Enhancer to further improve the anemic bass. So better advise Yamaha to leave this function as is. Thanks! Joe C.

Oh wow. Yes i have the A3070 and have the extra bass set to ON with all other speakers set to small. I have 4 subwoofers, one in each corner. And when i run REW i get a similar response to your measured graph with a dip at about 25-30hz and a peak at about 60hz. I thought it was just my room doing it and just tried to EQ as best i could after time alignment and put up with it. Now i need to go measure my subs again and turn that feature off.

What about center channel? Should that be set too large or small? I have 6/5 inch bass drivers and on their website they say if they're that size then to leave them as large. I don't know though, because yamaha settings are weird compared to other av receivers.

Hi Gene! Thanks for another great video. This time however after following your recommendation my system is lacking significantly in the bass region. I have a cx-a5200 and found after a lot of trial and error that it sounded best when my towers were set to small and extra bass on. Now that I set them to large there is barely any bass with or without extra bass on. I have two subs btw. Can you help me figure out ? Thanks!

Modal cancellations is playing tricks on you. Try simulating your room and speaker setup in REW. That will most likely explain it.

@@MovieViking I’ve got exactly the same problem and I’m not sure what exactly I should do to fix it. It just sounds better to me with the towers set to small and extra bass on
@MovieViking2 жыл бұрын
@@mrkokimoto81 If it isn’t modal cancellations it can be the phase settings. I highly recommend simulating your room and setup in REW and be carefully filling in the data on your speakers - and when you simulate the configuration where the towers are set to small remember to adjust the cutoff frequency according to the crossover setting used in the receiver.

Thanks again Gene for another very informative video. Really appreciate you and all the Audioholics gang. You guys are awesome! I have a Yamaha scenario where my speakers are not gargantuan but I still want fronts set large and extra bass turned on...I own the babies to the speakers in your background. I like to let them roll off naturally with my subs playing along with them. I have a suggestion for Yamaha and the others. Instead of these manufacturer's giving us a work around, why can't they just give us a toggle to "Play Subs In Two Channel" and make it strait forward. While at it give us a way to set the low pass crossover settings when in this mode too so that we don't have to do it in another device. And most certainly as you have shown us so well take away the ability to have simultaneous "Small Setting" and "Extra Bass" turned on. 🗣GET VACCINATED PEOPLE 💉

will the low pass of the sub be set to the same xover point when the mains are set to small or large and using extra bass? in other word can I choose to increase or decrease LPF even if they are set large. In your video the sub remains to 80hz
@WoLShiverify2 жыл бұрын
Gene, can you try extra bass small with crossover @ 60 and 40 Hz instead ?
@craigweidenheimer9441 Жыл бұрын
Nailed it! So odd that they have the small/large speaker conflict; and why use the term "extra bass" when what you are looking to do is engage the Sub in stereo? I would think most setups would want the sub engaged regardless of speaker size and source. If you have an imbalance in an exceptional case you can always turn the sub off at worst.

FYI for some of the older Yamaha receivers like the 2070 it's the "option button" that brings the extra bass option up

Muito bom esses gráficos. Em alguns testes realizados com Yamaha anterior e no atual, o Extra BASS deixava o som muito ruim com caixas pequenas! Explicado agora com essa análise dos gráficos,

I have Yamaha 4850 and I have small lrc speakers and a sub - when i kickin this Extra Base i loose clearity of sound meaning some freq is missed it seem very strange sound. May be this explains it and yes i have set speakers to small as they r tiny
@kevinweithers12233 жыл бұрын
Hi Gene. Can you explain what happens if you set the front left and rigt speakers to "large " but have crossover set to 80hz? What would be the logic/advantage of this configuration vs a setting of "small " with an 80hz crossover.
@matthewbir31803 жыл бұрын
Setting front LR to large allows the speakers to receiver a full range frequency signal regardless of whether the drivers themselves can handle this. Ignore crossover at this point. When small configuration is selected along with an 80 hz crossover this will essentially route any signal below this mark to the subwoofer (ie. 50 hz). Bass frequencies are more difficult to drive and demand more from the amplifier/power supply. So part of the logic would entail that your receiver will run cooler or more efficiently as less is demanded of it.

Does anyone knows whats the crossover number i get when i set my Yamaha 771 receiver to small speakers? I dont have an option to crossover the speakers, just the subwoofer. Thanks

Wait if you ALREADY have a sub and your speakers are set to small, is it better to increase the volume on the sub versus enabling EXTRA BASS?

That's a great test of an AVR. I heard you say you tested the "pre amp outputs", would the speaker outputs be the same? Also, I have to ask if you any experience with Onkyo receivers and the "Phase Matching Bass" setting and how it works? As always - Thanks Gene!!

Are you shure that there was no setting aktive with small and extra bass on? i have many expirience with yamaha, and you could not found everything in the menu. For example: i´ve you made a YPAO measuremt: I see changes at the outputs even when i set the peq to "trough". So to be shure that there is a bug like this: please make a factory-reset and repeat the test. maybe the result is different.
