I don't have swarm commander and I have never catch a swarm with just Lemongrass. I have made myself a mix. Half of a cup Olive oil, 5 drops Lemongrass, 5 drops Lavender oil. Mix it all together, use a clean paint brush and apply all over inside your box. I have catch 52 swarms this season here in Brandfort, South Africa.

Hello Lourens, and hello South Africa! Thanks so much for watching. There are so many ways to manage a bee yard, and we love hearing about different techniques from all over the world. Thanks for giving some great advice!

Great video. Bees are funny little creatures. We had a hive that had died out from wax moths. Through what can only be described as complete laziness I just shut the hive up after I discovered it was dead. At the end of the summer I noticed bees going in and out. A swarm had moved in and set up house keeping.

I thought I am the only one that think crazy about the orange strap, I am glad I found more likemind personalities, lol; I do exact same thing you mentioned about the straps, I don't know if that contributes to it but I do have quite a lot of success on trapping bees. Dan

Thanks for the videos John. But I'm stuck now on placement of the lure. You had recommended to me the vials and said pin it to the back. Spray LG oil at the entrance. Both of your swarm videos show the opposite. But on a good note. My colonies aren't as far along as we was thinking. Lots of drone cells but not 1 queen cell yet, open or closed.
@CentralBeekeepersSupply
@CentralBeekeepersSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Brad, sorry for the confusion. The reason it's different in this video is because the solution you're using includes vials of swarm commander. In either method, you're using a lure at the entrance and also inside the hive. In your case, the lemongrass takes the place of Swarm Commander at the entrance. Same general idea.

This is my first year as a beekeeper. I caught a swarm in a Homemade box with 8 super sized (shallow) frames mounted up in a tree a couple of weeks ago. What is the process for taking it down and moving the bees to a standard hive? Time of day? Seal up opening for a specific time period? Move all frames to the new hive? Put super frames in a large brood box? If needed, when to move additional bees to this hive? I apologize if you already have a video for this . I watched your video for putting out the swarm boxes but could not find one for recovering the swarm box and it’s timing considering a good weather day. Thank you for any response you can provide.

@CentralBeekeepersSupply
@CentralBeekeepersSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there, Nancy! This is from John: Take the catch box down, have a deep hive body ready and set it with the entrances facing one another. Place the frames over into the new box and shake the remaining bees out of trap into hive. Have a queen guard on entrance (hopefully you transferred queen on one of the frames), put outer cover on and leave till after dark. Then move bees to desired location. You will have to deal with whatever the bees do in their new box at a later time. Good luck thanks for watching!

I saw you using a compass. I'm a believer in bees are affected by the magnetic energy lines and build their comb in most cases aligned to said lines. And/or build their way comb in the same orientation as their parent colony. Therefore I like to orient my traps with the frames N-S.

Hello John and Cora . Please tell me in your Swarm Trap video why you have selected the place at such a height. Bees swarm will never get directly in to the box at height. They temporarilly will sit on a branch, then scout bees will find a good place to settle. which is never at height, so they will not select your box but if it would have been at ground level chances would be high. In the video you have used lemon grass scent to attract them. Do you use the same in your other beeboxes so your bees would be used to its smell?

Do you run 9 frames in a 10 frame box with a spacer …. And what is the benefit to this if that’s the case?
@CentralBeekeepersSupply
@CentralBeekeepersSupply 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, we run nine frames in all our supers, especially the honey supers. The reason is that they pull a deeper comb well, and you will make more honey per box. The bees are mindful to be spaced when it comes to brood and honey comb depth. And for the keeper who is concerned with (rolling) bees especially that queen, it allows the keeper more work room. Hope this has helped, thanks for question! #RTBBF

Good info! Roughly how many hives you run your business off of?
@CentralBeekeepersSupply

Thanks Kevin! Our hives aren't for profit, but rather for experience, honey, and to support nature's busy little pollinators. Our business is all things "beekeeper supply". We sell just about everything needed to raise and support a successful colony of bees. From frames and hive boxes to liquid feed and traps, we have it all in-store. Check us out online for more info about what we do and have to offer! www.centralbeekeeperssupply.com

Thanks Craig! In Arkansas the bees typically maintain a decent altitude when swarming. To evade and potential predators, they like to be around 8-15 feet from the ground. Please let us know how your catch goes! We're always interested to learn from a fellow beekeeper. Appreciate you watching!
