Whatever the specs on your speaker say they are, in many cases they're put out by very fine companies telling you the absolute scrupulous truth, and if you were measuring in their anechoic chamber you would achieve exactly the same numbers. Your living room, your listening studio is not their anechoic chamber. When you see a loud speaker that claims, for example, to go down to 34 Hertz, which is extremely deep bass.
0:30
In many cases it's not because the manufacturer can't do that, or the speaker can't do that. It's because your room, even with the speakers perfectly set up, can't support that. Rooms are enormously destructive and particularly of bass.
It's important to realize that while the manufacturer's being scrupulously, honest, that speaker in your space set up the way it's set up, may not be able to support that. But let's say the speaker's claims it's 32 hearts. Wow. That's a huge pipe in a pipe organ.
1:00
Well, the reality is the way it's set up in your room and your room is not an infinitely large chamber. It's good for maybe 48 or 50 Hertz. Why? Because that's the nature of physics. If you've got a room that's only 14 by 20 feet long, it literally physically cannot support the wavelength of 32 Hertz. So we end up making compromises. We get the speaker sounding as good as it can. It falls off at 48 Hertz at 50 Hertz, and that's a full octave, octave, and a half of music that's missing.
1:30
It's not just the music. It's the hall it was recorded in, it's the recording studio it was recorded in. All that information evaporates and your brain listens to it and goes, yeah, that's not a high end system. That's not real life. What we wind up doing is we come in well below the speaker.
Why? If you take the typical, perfectly designed speaker, which basically looks like a flat line until it goes away, and you take the perfect theoretical subwoofer, which also looks like a flat line until it goes away at the upper end of its peak. What you need to do is actually separate them by a certain amount.
2:00
Because the area under the curve, where they both can join is actually additive. I'll just make it simple. That area under the curve is additive flips and inverts, and you get a perfectly flat response between the REL and the main speaker all the way from the lower end of the REL, all the way to out as far as that tweeter can work.

I agree 100% with this. Even before I saw this video or knew about it, out of curiosity, I measured my B&W 804 D2 in my room (manufacturer specs rate them at 34Hz -6dB) but in my room they fell off pretty quickly after 54Hz. I can't tell you how many people buy their speakers and think they're getting that low end as specified by the manufacturer. They're not. And when they look at these REL subs that are rated at 30Hz, or 32 Hz and they think their speakers hit 34Hz, in their mind they're wondering why would they want to invest in a sub that only gives them 2 more Hz. In reality that sub is actually covering 20 Hz or more of a range in the low end. I use a pair of T5i's with my B&W, but now upgrading to T7x and I can tell you they work flawlessly with those speakers and bring out an experience in music that doesn't exist without subs

@@cyberathlete thanks, the reason I asked because I am surprised they fall off so quickly and I am curious if you are just experiencing a cancellation due to room modes, specifically at that frequency you mention. The speakers may not be located in the best location to help with the standing waves.
@cyberathlete
@cyberathlete 2 жыл бұрын
@@Eugene737 He did a nearfield measurement of the speaker which means the microphone was right up next to the drivers and thus the frequencies were mostly free from any impact of the room and he was going to get the max dB out of all the frequencies. You can't do that as the speaker sounds significantly different when your ears are next to it, vs in your listening position. The listening position is the real world scenario you need to work around. And since it's in the living room there is no acoustic treatment I can do there without getting kicked out of the house. So you need to have a real world measurement of the speaker and then work around that. You can't look at specs of reviews and think you will get the same results. Don't forget their review rooms are bigger, and they have purposed those rooms to get the most out of the speakers, which 90% of us can not do. They also move speakers 6 feet away from the back wall, which again I don't think any of us can do unless we have a dedicated room for speakers.
@Eugene737

@@cyberathlete yeah I agree, I don't expect what the manufacturer got in an anechoic chamber or what someone got in their house will work in another person's house when it comes to bass. I only mentioned the review (knowing it was nearfield) to say that it is capable of producing below 54hz and was just confused by what you initially said as I took that as *it doesn't produce anything useable 54hz and below*....relative to your listening position in your room. Is that true? If so, that sounds like quite a deep and wide null and glad you were able to combat it with multiple subs placed appropriately in your room given you can't move anything else.

Fantastic. Now how do we set the crossover? Where is part 2?
@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics 4 жыл бұрын
We recommend in most situations to start with the crossover control set to the 10 o'clock position, or approximately 15 clicks from minimum on the dial. From there you can adjust so that the crossover is set to below where your main loudspeakers are naturally rolling off in their low-frequency extension in your room, with as minimal overlap as possible. Typically when the crossover is set too high you will notice boominess and a lack of detail in the upper-bass to low-mid frequency range, and when it is set too low the transition between the subwoofer and your main loudspeakers will not be smooth and you will hear a disconnect between the two.

@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics 2 жыл бұрын
In our experience, the best method is to start with the Crossover set to the minimum position, and the Level set to a moderate point. With reference material playing, you can slowly raise the Crossover dial, and stop once you begin to hear a clear overlap between the subwoofer and the main loudspeakers, which often sounds like boominess and a lack of definition in the low-mid to upper-bass frequency range. Once you hear this, lower the Crossover by a couple of clicks, which should restore a more natural blend.

Thank you for reaching out, and for choosing a pair of REL Acoustics subwoofers for your home audio system. The Crossover control on your subwoofers should ideally be tuned by-ear to just below where your main loudspeakers naturally roll-off in their low-frequency extension in your room. Since this low-frequency extension point can vary depending on your room and how the speakers are being powered, we advise tuning by-ear rather than aiming for a specific numeric frequency point. To do so, start with the Crossover dial set to the minimum position, and play a familiar reference track that features deep and consistent sub-bass impulses. With the track playing, slowly raise the Crossover dial until you just begin to hear an overlap between the output of your main loudspeakers and the subwoofer, which will sound like boominess and a lack of definition/detail in the low-mid to upper-bass frequency range. Once you hear this you can lower the dial back down slightly which will restore a more seamless blend. More information about tuning stereo pairs of subwoofers can be found in the following article from our website: rel.net/blog/2015-07-20/tuning-guides/how-to-tune-a-stereo-pair-of-rels/

REL recommends you set speaker to large in a home theater system with the LFE AVR output to REL LFE input so how would set the crossover on the mains in the AVR?
@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics 3 жыл бұрын
Once the main loudspeakers have been set to large or full-range within your AVR, there ideally shouldn't be any crossover or bandwidth limiting applied to the main speaker channels. When using the high level input on our subwoofers, any crossover being applied to the main speaker channels will also limit the low-frequency extension of the subwoofer since both the speakers and the sub are receiving the same signal.

Hello REL, when setting the crossover with speakers which use a High Pass Filter and Low Pass filter such as the KEF Wireless II, should the REL crossover be dialed to the same frequency as the LPF?
@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics Жыл бұрын
Thank you for reaching out. If you wish to apply a low-pass filter to the signal being sent to the subwoofer, then we recommend connecting to it's .1/LFE input jack. The .1/LFE input bypasses the subwoofer's Crossover filter circuit, which will allow the filters within your KEF wireless speakers to completely control the output of the subwoofer. That being said, to get the best possible performance from your main loudspeakers and the subwoofer we recommend running the speakers without any high pass filtering applied, and then set the low-pass filter for the subwoofer output as high as possible. You will then be able to connect to the Low Level input on the REL and use it's Crossover dial to tune it's output to below where the main loudspeakers naturally roll-off in their low-frequency extension in your room.

Thank you for reaching out. Ideally the Crossover dial on a REL subwoofer should be set to just below where your main loudspeakers naturally roll-off in their low-frequency extension in your room. If the spec sheet for your speakers indicates that they are able to reach down to 39Hz then it is possible that in a typical home listening environment they will actually reach down into the mid 40Hz range, though to get the best results we recommend tuning the crossover by ear. Start with the Crossover dial on the sub set to the minimum position, then with a familiar reference track playing slowly raise the crossover until you begin to hear boominess and a lack of definition in the low-mid to upper-bass range, at which point you can lower it back down slightly to restore a seamless blend.

Congratulations on your new subwoofer! The Crossover control setting on the second T/9i will likely be the same as the first, though since you will now have two subwoofers in your room the Level controls on each will likely need to be set slightly lower than on the first subwoofer when it was used on it's own. For optimal performance, we recommend having both subwoofers placed just next to the corresponding speaker channel, meaning that the left channel subwoofer should be placed next to the left channel speaker and the right channel subwoofer should be placed next to the right channel speaker. how do you invert/flip the triangle up... I mean what do you need to do?
@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics Жыл бұрын
Thank you for reaching out. When the crossover on a REL subwoofer is set just below the natural low-frequency roll-off of your system's main loudspeakers their output will become reinforced in this frequency range, which results in the linear output shown in the graph at 2:13 in this video. This happens naturally where the output of both devices overlap slightly. If you set the crossover on the subwoofer too high then this range will become overly reinforced, resulting in output that is boomy and lacking in definition, though when the crossover is set correctly the output will become linear between the speakers and the subwoofer.
@shawnmathew825

so what does that mean...? if a speaker has a frequency response low of 30 hz, i set the REL crossover to 50 hz?
@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics 4 жыл бұрын
If your main loudspeakers are truly able to reach down to 30Hz with power and authority then ideally you will set the crossover control to just below 30Hz. However, in our experience very few loudspeakers are able to do this in a practical listening room, even when their published specs quote a 30Hz low-frequency response. This is why we recommend tuning the subwoofer's crossover control by ear, rather than aiming specifically for the speaker manufacturer's published spec, and listening for a smooth transition between the loudspeaker and the sub without any boominess and with minimal overlap between the two. Feel free to write in to contactus@rel.net if you have any questions regarding tuning REL subwoofers in your system.

@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for reaching out. If a pair of main loudspeakers is designed to reach down to 70Hz, then you would ideally want the subwoofer's crossover set to just below that point, likely around 60-65Hz. However, in our experience very few speakers perform exactly as the manufacturer's spec sheet states when placed in a typical home listening environment. For this reason, we recommend tuning the subwoofer's Crossover by ear, rather than aiming for a specific frequency. This will help the subwoofer to blend seamlessly with the main loudspeakers and how they are performing in your own listening environment.

I want to hear “good” bass whatever that means.
@johnclark3067

I think he means that it will not enhance frequencies of a certain range while considering speaker placement. There is a phenomena called "suck-out" where any amount of speaker output in a given frequency range will be dramatically quieter than outside that range. This could be caused by phase issues between multiple speakers playing the same frequencies in different locations. They could basically cancel each other out sometimes. I understand what he means by the size of a room versus wavelength of frequencies, but in practice you can hear and feel very deep bass especially with subwoofers. All in all, subwoofers should be located where they work best.

@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics 10 ай бұрын
Thank you for reaching out. Part of what allows a subwoofer to produce deep sub-bass output that a main loudspeaker can't produce is that a subwoofer is dedicating it's amplifier power specifically for producing sub-bass output, rather than also producing midrange and high-frequency output. It takes a fair amount of amplifier power to produce strong sub-bass output in a room, which is in-part why in most systems the amp power rating of the subwoofer will be greater than that of the main loudspeakes' power amplifier. On top of that, all of the other design attributes of a subwoofer (the driver, cabinet, filters, etc.) are tailored specifically for sub-bass reproduction, which help them to overcome room issues that main loudspeakers have a more difficult time overcoming since they are designed to reproduce low-mid to high-frequency output accurately.

Thank you for reaching out. The Crossover dial on our subwoofers is not linear, and in fact a Crossover dial setting of 15 clicks from the minimum position actually sets the filter roll-off point close to 35Hz. You can then play a familiar reference track with deep and consistent sub-bass impulses, and slowly raise the Crossover dial until you just begin to hear an overlap with your main loudspeakers, which you will hear as boominess and a lack of definition/detail in the low-mid to upper-bass frequency range. Once you hear this overlap, you can then lower the Crossover back down by 1-2 clicks to restore a more seamless blend.

Yes another concise explanation for dummies , l get it and from constantly making adjustments looking directly at my bookshelf speakers and listening for a change l worked something out but know l know where to start thanking you . Also i do 5 channel stereo mode, old Denon with a tone button that sets levels much quicker than me . The volume [ phone to BT analog ] and EQ plus amp gain are crucial all 3 can't be over driven for the room to bounce . One more thing sorry , is your twin brother Caesar Millan ? Both very calming voices. Cheers @@RELAcoustics

My music room is small and the bass sounds better outside of it.

I must be an idiot, because no matter how I keep listening to “track 4” (which I’ve really grown to hate) I seem unable to find the right balance.

While "Cosmo...Old Friend" (track 4 from the Sneakers soundtrack) is our recommended reference track for tuning subwoofers, realistically any program material that you are familiar with that features deep and consistent sub-bass impulses will work well for tuning subwoofers. In your case, it would be worth trying other reference tracks to see if it helps you to achieve a better blend between the output of your subwoofer and your main loudspeakers.

If a speaker cannot support bass frequencies because the limiting factor is the room size itself, adding a subwoofer will not override the laws of physics. I think REL and Mr. Hunter need to rethink their position on this.
