Amazing! My favorite example was the second one. However, I would've personally put a pillow in there instead. That or two felt strips, one on the batter and one on the resonant. I've been looking for a bass drum sound that has good punch at first and then boom behind it. Honestly, for that, I think either a 26x14" or 28x14" would be perfect for that sound. Still deciding between the two. Keep up the good work my friend and Merry Christmas.

What a cool coincidence! I was just plopping around on youtube when I came across your video.. About 10 years ago I found an 18" deep x 28" diameter Keller shell on ebay, bought it impulsively for under 200 bones and decided I needed to build a drum kit around what would become this monstrous bass drum. So, to the coincidence(s). I used all Ludwig hardware and I wrapped the whole kit except the snare(which is transient, I use lots, today it's a Ludwig Supralite 14x8) in the same color dark blue sparkle as the other pieces of your setup. (mine are 14x12 mounted, 16x16 and 18x16 floors, all Keller shells) I used the exact same heads on the bass, ( I dig the Fiberskyns too) and cut the same size port in the same spot (and appointed it with a blue Drum-O) . This is the first time I have seen this video, plus I built this 10 years ago! So It's totally a spooky coincidence, to me anyway. If your bass drum wasn't a marching drum, and was 18x28, and was blue, it would be exactly alike in a lot of ways. Of the 7 kits I have and play regularly, this cartoonishly huge drum kit is the most fun to play ( but not to haul around.) It sounds absolutely killer and I love it. I really love the sounds you are getting too, though it's a little difficult to tell what yours sounds like "naked" (unmic'd, no compression etc) but I'm guessing they would be very similar. That Acrolite sounds very much like my Supralite, both excellent sounding drums. Ludwig's cheapo's sound better than most other brand's high end snares. Oh, and just for the hell of it, I built 20,22,24 and 26 bass drums to match. Loads of laughs for me! Thanks for posting.

It sounds like we were kind of on the same track with what we were going for. I bet yours sounds amazing! I really had a blast working on this, I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out, but, I was happy how things went! It's great to hear that you are still drumming and having a blast with music! Hi Jerimy. Great Video. The 6ply Maple / Poplar Ludwig shallow depth shell moves less air when you strike the head. Quick attack,low end punch. Awesome sound. My personal favorite is the blanket ,no hole. I use 1felt strip front and back ,no hole. Happy Percussioning my friend .👍🥁🎉

Great video, and amazing 28"x10" conversion ..... Gotta say, like you. I'd have personally stopped after you had the minimum blanket muffling... then again, someone would have liked to hear it with the hole... I mount a Beta 91 on a Kelly's Shu Flatz. Inside my Tama 24"x18" with a fiberskyn reso head and an Evans EMAD (I usually use the Powerstroke batter head, but the store didn't have a 24" one in stock when I needed it) and it sounds awesome... again personal taste in what you like to have... Love this video :)

Can't believe I just ran across your videos sir. Great timing though,I purchased a 14x28 Ludwig, awhile back.Just started working on it.Dont know the year,but after taking off the wrap discovered the out side is mahogany, and the reinforcement rings are maple.The inner ply is probably poplar. The inside has the Ludwig white paint on it.In is formal life was a marching drum.gonna have to buy new hoops,mount spurs , refinish the drum inside and out,and polish the mach lugs.By the time I get done probably have a lot more in it than it's worth but that's ok.Always wanted a big bass drum and found mine for $75.00. All in for the new heads,hoops,spurs and the 75.00 I paid for it should be complete and ready to play $300.00 total. Can't wait to get the project rolling.

I just picked up a classic vintage Kent drum set, circa 1968. I want to put a new reso head on the bass drum (20"). Batter head is an Evans Gmad clear with a foam muffling ring around the circumference of the head; which is fine. I'm leaning towards either a Remo Fiberskyn or Evans '56 Calftone for the reso side. Do you prefer the Fiberskyn 'Powerstroke' version over the plain Fiberskyn for a bass drum reso head and why?
@LittleDrummerChannel
@LittleDrummerChannel Жыл бұрын
Hello and congratulations on your new cool bass drum! Great question regarding the Remo Fiberskyn’s. The main difference with the Power Stroke heads is that it will provide the added mylar ring around the inside edge to help control overtones a bit more (check out the video at about 3:13). I liked this option for this bass drum due to the really large size of the drum. I also really like the aesthetics of the Remo Fiberskyn’s and I use them on all the bass drums I have. For your situation with a 20inch drum you could really go either way. If you like having more control over how you choose to mute/baffle your drum you may want to choose the non-Power Stroke version, so you can have less muting/baffling if needed without needing to remove and change the drum head. The batter head Evans that you mentioned will be a nice choice too! Remo used to make a stand alone mylar ring with a foam insert that you could lay on the bearing edge first and then place your drum head of choice on top of it. I still have several of those and use them often…sometimes on both batter and reso sides. I cannot find those anywere these days, but I am glad that I kept the ones that I have because these new combo versions (all in one) are pretty pricey. Sorry for the lengthy reply, but I hope that this helps you out a bit my friend!

I have two 28x14 bass drums and these are the exact heads I use. I put a felt strip on the reso side, no pillows or ports. Large bass drums need to be tuned higher. I was with ya till ya cut that hole! Honestly however I think you did a good job here, but once that port is there it just sounds like any other "box" and kind of defeats the purpose/point of a large bass. Still a great vid, was pleasantly surprised to see.... (get a lot of questions regarding my bass drums) Cheers man, keep on rockin'!

Hey thanks my friend!! I appreciate you leaving your thoughts!! I like that one a lot too. I play live often and phase 1 is tough to use when you are on stage…mainly due to low frequency feedback issues. I can use phase 1 on stage, but it typically then has to be gated with processing and then it ends up sounding like phase 2 or 3…LOL! But for in the studio, phase 1 is sweet!! Love hearing about your new bass drum!!! I hope that it brings you a lot of musical fun and expression!! Take care my friend!!

My first question is , do you always move that fast when you are working and if so then we could definitely make a lot of money, hahaha !!!! Ok I'm done with the jokes. I have a set of ludwig rockers from 79-83 and have been wanting to strip them down to the bare wood and stain them and see how they would sound without that outer plastic shell on them. Y'all done a good job with that base and it really gives your kit a unique sound that sounds great. Have a great day.

Amazing sounds!!!!! Can you explain how to tension the bass drum up? I have a vintage kit and when I put the claws on, some of the claws grab while others do not. I wonder if I’m doing something wrong. What way do you tension the bass drum?
@LittleDrummerChannel
@LittleDrummerChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Hello my friend and thank you so much for your kind words and support! That is a great question that you asked! Sometimes you need to check to see if the hoop is warped, sometimes that could be the issue. If it is you may try to find another one if the size match is not too difficult to find a replacement. Also what you can try to do is to get a different threaded claw length...longer or shorter and see if that can fix your issue. Unfortunately these kind of issues are run into with older drums, typically it’s because they become warped or misshapen through the years. Let us know how it goes and we hope the very best!

@LittleDrummerChannel
@LittleDrummerChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Hello my friend and thanks for your kind words and reaching out! I like the Ambassador due to the extra weight of the head. The extra weight will add a bit of low end and help keep the overtones down and keep the sound more focused. Since its such a massive drum certain frequencies can get out of hand quick sometimes. That’s just my opinion though. Hoping that you pick the perfect head for your sweet drum!
