thanks for the video. Even though I only used the drill with the plastic spool step, the process was pretty quick and easy. Plus I got the right amount of backing on my reel the first time I ever setup a new fly reel.

Used this method to setup my new 8wt. I used my shop vise with a bolt and washer to hold the fly and backing spools. Using the drill to pull the line off the reel was super easy. Awesome method. Thanks!

Excellent tutorial, I do a very similar method on my spinning reels, I join the backing to the topshot and wind it onto an empty spool, and then onto a second empty spool and then onto the reel, always a perfect amount.

Nice idea about Cup. I did not think about that cup. I use drill and different diameter of nuts to fit different spool and had Japanese made spool adapter to wind the thread with tension. You learn something everyday

Hunter Cano , it really depends on the manufacturer. I have just purchased a Greys platinum stealth line which has no loops either end, they do however supply 2 braided loops for you to fit. Being really new to fly fishing I’m so thankful for all the information and instructional videos available on KZbin! Hope that helps. Regards Clive from Dorset UK.

Yes you can but it is very thin and tough on hands when reeling in. Dacron is larger in diameter, softer and definitely more friendly on the hands.

@@Wyatt_Olson Dacron will rot over time and must be replaced. Because it is more expensive than monofilament, it can get expensive. To get the most life out of your Dacron line, rinse your reel in tap water when you get home and make sure you let it dry thoroughly before putting it away. Dacron is also susceptible to what is referred to as "braid bite" or sinking into itself. If not wound tight, the Dacron will sink into itself on the reel and cause your reel to lock up. This makes the drag ineffective and puts a lot of pressure on your line. The end result is usually the line breaking. Another disadvantage to Dacron is that many anglers complain that it is difficult to tie knots with. Certain knots do not ever seem to get tight and stay tight which can result in losing tackle if you are not careful. Braided Dacron is also known to have very little resistance to abrasion. It has been known to break if it rubs against anything jagged or rough.

Then why don't you figure out another way. Yes this method sucks. It takes lots of time. It requires tools. The whole process is major pain. But, I don't believe there is another method that insures you get the proper amount of backing on the reel.

I tell you what genius. Do a little web search and see what you find. If you really want the correct amount of backing on your reel there aren't many other ways to do it. In fact, if you find one, I will post the link right here for all to see. Just guessing how much backing to put on doesn't count.

I had taken your advice prior to your offer and found a video that explained it better for me. It also put your video more into focus. Im not denying your knowledge, I just struggled with your technique. Ta Fisher was the channel. Thanks for the reply. I think, in time, your way will be a timesaver so I'll return when I get a better understanding.
