Depends on the setup. Add the bacteria and a small amount of fish food to help them get going. Test the water daily until nitrates appear. Add the fish slowly, beginning with 5-10% of the tank's max bioload, and continue with daily testing. If ammonia appears, stop adding fish, reduce feeding to a minimum, add another shot of beneficial bacteria. Keep going this way until ammonia and nitrites are flat and nitrates are steady.

Have a few questions for you, or anyone else that has experience: I had tanks for many years back in the 80s - 90s. but have been away from it since. I'm thinking of setting one up again, but things seem to have changed quite a bit since I was into it. Tank wise, I'm prob going with 29 gal to 35 gal. Having looked at a few filters, I'm thinking of going with Aquaclear Power filter. Would it be wise to go with one rated higher than the tank size? Say an Aquaclear 50 vs Aquaclear 30 for a 29 gal tank? Also When I was researching filters, I noticed there aren't a lot of under-gravel filters these days. They were really common when I was into it back in the 80s. Is there a reason for that?

I see this written a lot, but I think most people won't know what is meant by driftwood. Most driftwood floats. What works best for me, is going to a swimming hole and finding not rotten sticks that is so saturated it stay sunk on the bottom of the water. Beginners might not understand.

Thankfully, cycling the tank initially can take a lot less time these days with some of the bacteria-laden additives available. 39 years ago I usually took a week before I added fish, but I've had plenty of success after 3 days over the last few years. However, I still start with one or two of the least expensive fish I can find until I know the tank's cycle has taken root. Then I add more in pairs (just so I don't throw off the tank's equilibrium). I try to keep the tank sparsely stocked just because it reduces cleaning requirements and makes it safer for the fish. For example, I typically keep only about 5 fish in a 30-gallon tank. -Still plenty to look at, IMO.
