Great explanation. What you now need to do is show and demonstrate how everything is connected together by the various cables etc. For a beginner like me, this would be a great help especially with all the options of different cable types available. Can you believe no one has ever done this yet! I've looked but can't find anything on U Tube. Which cable is best from my CD Transport to my DAC and where do they go? What cables go in and what cables go out and to where? That would be a great video. Cheers

One thing to add, if the source file on your iPad/phone is a heavily compressed file, example a 128kbps mp3 you might not hear a lot of difference between the headphone output (3.5mm jack on the iPad) versus using the better external DAC and Preamp. I buy 24bit FLAC files and buy CD's still, I use EAC (its free) To rip the CD's to FLAC which is still a very good uncompressed sound. My point is having higher quality audio files will give you the best reason to do an awesome external DAC/Preamp/Poweramp setup and actually hear more of the difference.

I really enjoyed that recap of the whole process, I'm bookmarking this to show my gf, so hopefully I'll get less odd looks while I'm building speakers. She is a life long musician (trumpet) player, while I've spent most of my time in aviation engineering and mountain biking. I'll be testing my new center speaker with 10 drivers and three cross-overs on 1100 watts hopefully tomorrow. You said speaker building can be addicting, god help me... I still smile every time I turn that knob to the right on my rack mount.. ;)

Kirby, I'm sorry, but the signal coming out of a DAC is already a line signal (1,5 to 2.0V). You connect it to a pre-amp so you can control the volume. If you'd connect it straight to the power-amp, the sound would not be distorted, if the digital source isn't set to full volume. If you would set it to full volume, it would be like turning the volume knob all the way open on your pre-amp. And who does that...? The pre-amp also makes it less harder for the DAC to 'drive' the inputs of the pre-amp. This also benefits the sound, but that's a long story...

Hey, Kirby! I'm a complete noob to HIFI systems and I'm going to be investing in a very expensive system soon. I would like to know exactly what I need to complete this system down to the wiring or cables. Also before I get into the system components I'd like to run a DAC and a Vinyl player in the setup. So I know some of the components I'm going to get, I just don't know what cables I need and how to hook it all up. So here is what I'm thinking about getting: SPEAKERS - SVS Ultra Bookshelf speakers AMP - Rogue Audio Sphinx v2 Integrated amp VINYL PLAYER - Clearaudio Concept So I would need a DAC for digital audio, preamp, and cables? Let me know exactly what you would do to set this all up and what cables to buy for the entire setup. Thanks!
@lukesousa9986
@lukesousa9986 5 жыл бұрын
You don't need a preamp for an integrated amp (sphinx v2). Integrated = preamp + power amp. Also general rule of thumb so far as bang for buck is no pieces should cost more than your speakers so Idk, popular consensus would be multiply the cost of those speakers by a factor of 2 to 3 while downgrading the cost of those other pieces. Also cables/interconnects that makes up less than a percent of what's really important.

Kirby, What's the difference between this and say a 5.1 channel Yamaha receiver? Does the receiver do all the conversion to analog and pre and power amp to create sound? I guess I need to know if this will produce better sound and can you plug in multiple sources?

Love you videos! Could you possibly do one on crossover design? I am working on a build project for custom tower speakers and have done a lot of research into matching speaker components but I cant really find a good guide to crossover design for a multi speaker tower (i.e 1x tweeter w/ 2 or 3 woofers) I understand this will be based off the the frequency ranges for the specific speakers but I am also interested in design based off of wiring configuration for impedance (I think...?)

Please, I have Schiit Valhalla & Bifrost Combo and wish I could bind them to a pair of speakers, I would like to know if I can only connect to active monitors or could connect directly to passive speakers. @marcianoacuerda
@marcianoacuerda 6 жыл бұрын
Mostly yes. With a turn table you don't need a DAC, because they are already analog. Then you'd need to know if said turn table is pre amped or not. If yes, you just need the power amp and the speakers. If not, you should connect it to the pre amp and the rest remain the same. With a cd player, or any other digital device it will depend on the outputs it has. If it has a way to output a digital signal then this video applies completely, if not, you're mostly going to connect it to the power amp, but as Kirby said, crank it to 90% and then change the volume on the amp.

How is it that the Dayton APA150 has a volume control if it needs a preamp? I have to admit that the preamp kind of confuses me. Let's say I wanted to send a Chromecast audio signal to an APA150, I would still need a preamp for it to sound good? I just bought one on your recommandation and it seems weird to buy a 350$ preamp for a 150$ amp... Are there cheaper options that would work? Thanks for the video!

Hmm in a way you are right. DAC can get the as much stuff out as was in there. Right? And if you use a service like Spotify or KZbin or Apple Music these have lossy compression so you cannot get much out of the DAC (because there wasnt much information anyway) but if you stream lossless then a Good external DAC can do wonders. I am no audiophile but this is my basic understanding.

when an amplifier says it has 130w rms (1ch) and 80w rms (stereo) but it's a 5.1 system does that mean in a 5.1 setup each channel gets 80w rms of power? And when it says 400w power consumption does that mean it's 400w rms total? Confused person here please help :/.

Abdurrochman Hamim afaik, nothing bad really. I'm current using a dac which is directly connected to a power amp (odac connected to a behringer a500). The sound coming from my floorstanders is real nice and without any distortion. That being said however, I'd advice using a pre amp purely for controlling the volume.

Their are some China made DAC'S using the AK4490 and some very very good J-FET OP AMPS and they cost under $100 and i bet you a thousand dollars on your low end equipment and speakers you wont tell a difference.start to get some high end AMPS & Speakers and you will start to notice better bass from the Schiit because of it's discrete output stage. That's when you buy a Kit that needs to be assembled and soldered that is using two AK4490 DAC chips one for each channel then toss out the electrolytic capacitors for some wima polyester capacitors also use 1% metal oxide resistors you could even add second tube output stage from the DAC so you can switch between the two. Then build a linear power supply and now you have a high end DAC that will out perform your Schiit for less than half the cost of the Schiit aint that some SHIT !!!!!

Way to much money uselessly spent. BROKE PEOPLE READ ON : For digital only content (that being 90% of you) : BUY A FULL DIGITAL AMPLIFIER like I Am D V200 ! 150$ tops on aliexpress, has EVERYTHING you'll ever need. And put all your money where it does matter : the speakers. I repeat, the speakers. - You want cds ? Use your computer or a shitty dvd or cd player that has a digital output (toslink/optical/digital coaxial), it will do the exact same job as a 4000 bucks cd player : pushing the same bits to your DAC. - You want a chromecast ? buy a chromecast audio, it has optical built in - You want bluetooth ? most FDAs have it built in, don't bother with another device This comes from someone who had a 10,000$ setup before I was knowledgeable enough to tell apart all the bullshit this market is filled with.
