How to set up a pair of speakers. Part one - basic room acoustics advice

Correctly setting up your speakers can make a big difference to how they perform in your room.
This first part covers possible issues with room acoustics that should be addressed first -

I'm just getting into Hifi and vinyl and this is probably the most eye opening video I've seen with regards to the room and how the environment affects the sound and little things and placements can make a difference. A friend of mine has spent thousands on his set up and to be fair I've never heard anything like it but if we took it all and put it I'm my room it could sound totally different.

I could not agree more about the importance of the room when it comes to good sound. My living room is 16x12x8 feet, there is a 5 ft opening on one side the leads into a 14x12 ft dining room and a 32 inch doorway into a front wall (speaker wall) and I find these help with bass because it gives longer wavelengths someplace to go. My equipment is setup on a heavy record cabinet on one side wall and there is a low record cabinet with a pair if power amps between the speakers, this is low enough to stay pretty much out of the way of the mid and high frequency wavelengths. I have a pair of 2x4ftx4in thick panels sitting kitty corner in the corners of the speaker wall and a book case between two windows on the back wall of the room. There is a heavy area rug on the floor with a sofa against one wall and upholstered chairs opposite the speakers. I was have a glare problem but that went away after I swapped the location of a stack of components and a Rega P3 turntable, I think the TT cover was bouncing a first reflection at my listening position. That was solved by just switching the location of the TT and equipment on that heavy record cabinet.

Nice video I did leave a comment about the rega amps you showed on your last video if you could it a glance . Regarding speaker placement I couldn’t agree more , but in a non dedicated room we just have to compromise on speaker placement. You obviously know your subject and have a well tuned ear to pick up on these subtle changes . I’m afraid I don’t have such a high skill level, but I can appreciate a good system all the same . Doesn't help with most places, other stuff in the room,but on my SVS Subwoofer have an antimode unit which helps the room eq out and not have too much bass for example where it shouldn't be.

Have you tried bringing both the speakers and the listening position further into the room, away from the front and back walls? I found that made a tremendous difference to the realism of the soundstage in my room. Thanks for an informative video.

Yes, it can make a difference.. weirdly both dem rooms here were the other way around, sound better sitting against the wall.

Wobbly speaker....man. Wow. That Will do wonders for your imaging Yeah. It Will completly ruin it. Very little damping in a almost perfectly reflecting room. Especially the large radiator comes to mind. It must sound awfull.
