Seahorses are NOT as difficult as many people think. A lot of the online information about keeping them is outdated, so I do hope this will help anyone thinking about setting up a new seahorse tank. I will actually set up 2 tanks on video in the very near future, but this video covers the guidelines that will help you keep seahorses successfully. There is a longer version that I will post shortly. I did my best to be straightforward in this video, with less of the pictures and detailed explaining. haha!
This video is for NEW seahorse keepers, or those researching how to set up a seahorse tank. There are many ways of doing things successfully, and the aim of this video is to start up correctly, so that a keeper CAN try new things once they understand their seahorses, and their needs. Please ask any questions in the comment section, and if you'd like to see any videos about specifics....just ask :)
Upcoming videos include: "Macroalgaes - the good, the bad and the benefits", "dwarf tank set up", "fry tank set up", "fry keeping", "how a seahorse keeper can vacation", "Live food cultures", "Buying seahorses guide" and "Who's Who - a review of the current seahorse online information and where to find the best advice"! I'm working hard to get these done! Stay tuned!!!!!
Here is a link to tank mate guidelines (but please take my advice and start with seahorses and snails! Once you obtain healthy seahorses, get them eating and happy, and learn their behaviors, you can then decide what your risk tolerance level is, and add based on that :) ALWAYS QUARANTINE! You can learn so much about individual animals by getting to know them before adding to a display. It also reduces the chance of adding a pathogen or deadly hitchhiker:

I did neglect to mention salinity, which is very important. Salinity in a seahorse tank should be 28 - 36 ppt or 1.021 - 1.027 sg. I personally have found that my seahorses are most active and happy at 1.023sg (30.5ppt). As with all saltwater creatures, keeping your parameters stable is much more important than a specific number. Avoid fluctuations, and they'll get used to your system :)

Great Video! I'm planning to have a macroalgae reef tanks(softies) with 2 seahorses (hippocampus reidi), 2 pipefishes and 4 manderim gobys(different species). I have 2 questions: 1º with a good clean up crew (CUC), the macroalgae and rocks for the bacteria, did i still need a skimmer? 2º can seahorses eat dry goods? Thanks!
@SeahorseWhisperer

1. I ALWAYS recommend a skimmer!!!! Macroalgae is amazing and I use it in multiple tanks to handle nutrients. But nothing compares to a skimmer.....that's not only removing major organics, but also helping with oxygenation! I'm currently trying to keep a smaller all in one seahorse tank that can only accommodate a smaller skimmer. And I'm seeing MAJOR differences!!!!

Do you cover the protein skimmer? Or just the filter I take and powerheads, do skimmers need to be covered?
@SeahorseWhisperer
@SeahorseWhisperer 6 жыл бұрын
I've never had a skimmer that wasn't covered? Most of my tanks have sumps, so the skimmer is not in the display. But my 2 hang on skimmers have sponge around the intake, and came that way. You need to cover ANYTHING that a seahorse could hitch on, and their tail could get caught in. So, if your skimmer has an intake with no sponge, then YES, cover it!

I have a seahorse, not sure what kind, but he/she was fine when I got it. He was shy at first then got comfortable. He ate fine and swam sometimes. Recently he hasn’t been eating, twitching kinda, and is just sitting on the bottom, or floating to the top. What do I do?

@SeahorseWhisperer
@SeahorseWhisperer 6 жыл бұрын
Apologies! I thought I responded ;(. Do you plan on breeding the seahorses? Seahorses are vertical swimmers so all of them will appreciate more space to swim, but the need for more height is more about the egg exchange. They twirl around each other in this magical dance, coming together to do the exchange near the surface. So, when breeding is the goal, the higher the better. However, I’ve had many seahorses Complete the exchange successfully in shorter tanks. The recommended height guideline is one that isn’t crucial to their well being (if you’re buying CB seahorses, and consider their adult height). The 3 reasons for the guideline: 1) people don’t realize how big the seahorses can get. My big boy erectus is probably a foot long, and wouldn’t be able to swim very well in a short tank. Just know that you might have to upgrade with larger species. 2) the exchange - as stated, I’ve had many do fine in shorter tanks, but some seahorses won’t try if there isn’t adequate room up top. 3) wc seahorses can have de-gassing issues based on the depth at which they were collected. However, even the tallest home aquarium won’t help with this issue, so....just buy CB :). Now that ive rambled to no end.....I think you’d be fine in a 40b, at least initially. But, most people end up wanting more seahorses, or wanting to try their hand at breeding. So.....if you only have a 40b, we could make it work. But, if you have the option, always go bigger! The macros really do make a tank magical! You can see I love them, and can send you some when you’re ready! But, definitely QT anything you add to the tank, from any source. The last thing you need are hitchhikers! Let me know when you get started! I’ll help any way that I can :).

i heard that seahorses hold tails like their holding hands with their mates when they swim around. is that true?
@SeahorseWhisperer
@SeahorseWhisperer 5 жыл бұрын
A “couple” can swim around tail locked. But typically when they hitch on each other it’s an irritating thing :). A seahorse will “hitch” (wrap tail around) another seahorse face if it happens to be there. Or I’ve seen males almost wrestle each other to get to food or a girl using their tails to push the other back. A pair does swim together in a magical dance when they’re courting. And When a pair is ready to exchange eggs, they swim in a synchronized spin towards the surface of the water, coming together perfectly so the female can release eggs into the male pouch. But, to line up properly, they can’t be “holding tails”.

A sump is a low space that collects often undesirable liquids such as water or chemicals. Sump can also refer to an area in a cave where an underground flow of water exits the cave into the earth. The purpose of the filter on your aquarium is to remove excess food, decaying organic matter, free-floating particulate, dangerous chemicals, and the fish's waste products from the water. The fish excrete waste constantly as they swim around in the water. A sponge filter is good which seahorse whisper shows in a video HOW TO SET UP A DWARF SEAHORSE TANK VIDEO.

@SeahorseWhisperer
@SeahorseWhisperer 6 жыл бұрын
People believe they are difficult because they aren't setting up properly for them, and blame the fish when things don't work out. Years ago, seahorses were kept in tanks that were too small, at too high a temperature, in uncycled tanks, without feeding the necessary foods. When the seahorses died, those people blamed the fish 😉. One thing that hugely impacted how difficult it was to keep seahorses was captive breeding programs. In the past, most seahorses sold were wild caught. WC are not frozen food trained, not used to living in a tank, and typically have parasites, worms, or other pathogens that they might have been able to deal with in the ocean, but multiply too quickly and take over in a small area. If you buy a CB seahorse from a breeder, you avoid so many issues. These seahorses were born in tanks and buying them helps conserve the wild population.....who are happy left in the ocean :). I still see articles online that claim that "seahorses pair for life" and "seahorses require low flow" or "can't be kept in homes". None of these are true, and it just goes to show that the more we learn, the easier it is to keep "difficult" fish 😁

Don't be scared! 30 gallon tank per pair of seahorses leaves you plenty of room for mistakes. Buying CB from a breeder means you start with quality seahorses, who were not stripped from the ocean, and can call on the breeder if you have any issues. In case you haven't noticed, I absolutely adore my seahorses. I might just upload a special video of them rushing the glass and dancing up and down like little kids when I came home from my trips.......just for you! They were sooooo cute

best species to start with ? if you want to keep the tank temp around 26 degree Celsius ( 78-79 Fahrenheit roughly) and can it be done at that temp
@SeahorseWhisperer

Best species for a newcomer depends on where you are located and what's available. The number one thing to look for is CAPTIVE BRED! If you're in the US, I would suggest Hippocampus Erectus. They are SO easy to raise and keep, and are very active in the tank. My personal favorite species is h.Barbori, but they are extremely picky eaters and should only be attempted by experienced breeders. Tell me where you're located and I can provide more details

@SeahorseWhisperer

Stick to small gobies that are not aggressive. Nice blennies work too. As for starfish, a sand sifter would work, but avoid any species that you’ll have to feed or might munch on algae that grows on seahorses (those small asternia stars are a huge pain and hurt seahorses). For sand, I like snails. Nassarius snails are great for excess food, and margaritas are wonderful for everything else :)

Do you have any recommendations for the best cleanup crew with them ? I know you mentioned snails a lot. Also, do you have any recommendations on what power heads to use and where to locate them in the tank?
@SeahorseWhisperer
@SeahorseWhisperer 4 жыл бұрын
I love my snails :). I typically use a lot of them, peppermint shrimp and then refugium or scrubber in the sump helps too (although that’s not really CUC). Many people use blue-leg hermit crabs also. Just steer clear of anything aggressive. Powerheads: In my larger displays, I like wave makers with controllers that allow adjustment and have a feed mode. I personally use jebao - in my 65g, I have one RW4 on the left towards the top, and a second on the right near the bottom pointed up (to help with any dead spots). Strength of each wave maker is approx 50%, and I would recommend watching the seahorse to determine whether yours might need more or less. Seahorses DO NOT need low flow. In fact, they often swim into the flow. But, they should be able to swim easily in all areas, and have places of lower flow with hitching posts to rest. I cover the wavemakers with plastic mesh connected with zip ties. In smaller tanks, I’ve used 1-2 typical powerheads, which typically have attachments to cover any parts that might hurt seahorse tails. In every situation, make sure there is good surface agitation. I personally pull this off using return nozzles and/or typical filters at or above the surface, or under the water pointing up to create that ripple. Oxygen exchange demands this type of surface agitation, so if you need to use a power Head to make it happen....do so! Abby Underwood (of Seahorse Source) gave terrific advice about using combined means to make up the flow within the tank. Turnover should be 10-15 times (via HOB or sump), with approx 5-10 times circulated throughout the aquarium via powerheads or wave maker. So, for a 60 gallon, you’d want a pump or HOB rated 600gph + and 1-2 wavemakers with combo gph of 300+. Obviously, you can play with this combo to find something that works for you and your seahorses. But the combined flow is what really helps! And adjustable pumps and powerheads are fantastic! I’m literally working on the help articles for the website as we speak....so if you think of other questions that might be helpful, please let us know!

I've never used heaters, because keeping the tank cool has always been the priority (remember, stay under 74!) A captive bred seahorse is trained to eat frozen MYSIS SHRIMP. However, frozen mysis comes in packaging that is filled with preservatives and other things that will lead to higher organics. So we recommend that a keeper use a brine shrimp net or sieve to defrost the frozen mysis, while also rinsing it off. If you're using live feeds, the process is a bit different. But it is always important to add only the feed to the tank.

I definitely think it’s possible, and actually think it’s quite a cool idea. I believe that Todd Gardner kept seahorses in his classrooms at one point. I will ask if he has any tips! If you have any questions regarding set up or care, please let me know! We would love to be updated on how things go if you decide to proceed! If you would like to share , my email is kelly@seahorsewhisperer.com. Depending on your long term goals for the project, (and without knowing the details), my general suggestions would be: - use captive bred seahorses only (to promote the conservation/ aquaculture) - stick with a hardy species (like h. Erectus), because they will interact more and get less stressed by the students and situation) - if you don’t plan to include breeding, get all the same sex to avoid fry, or keep them separated. Fry and dwarfs would be more difficult to leave without food for a day. As far as not going in on Saturday, some people actually fast seahorses for one day out of the week. I do not personally do this, but they should be fine for one day if well fed thoughout the week. Other ideas off the top of my head are: teach the custodian to feed them on sat? Or add live Mysids Friday after lights out. The Mysids would have a chance to hide, and then the seahorses could hunt them all sat. I’m quite envious of your students :). I wish my teacher in high school had kept seahorses! We got a silly bunny. lol.

I read somewhere taller tank is NOT good as their gills are not that efficient so its advised to have wider tanks to increase the surface area for better oxygen. Can you clarify why you are specifically suggesting taller tanks?
@SeahorseWhisperer
@SeahorseWhisperer 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I need to make an updated version. As we learn, we figure things out :). When I made this video, people though tall tanks were better. Especially for breeding seahorses, to give them room for the egg exchange. We now know that tall tanks are not necessary, though none of the scientists, hobbyists or breeders that I have worked with have ever suggested that it was harmful. It’s just not needed, and we now recommend a tank that is easier to clean (in other words a person can reach the bottom without difficulty. I DO appreciate you calling this to my attention though! I’ll get a new video up with updated info and link to it!

@SeahorseWhisperer
@SeahorseWhisperer 6 жыл бұрын
Ocean River Aquatics I don't put a lid on any of my seahorse tanks. They don't jump 😉, and the oxygen exchange tends to be better with no lid. Also, because keeping the temperature low is so important, a lot of people who don't use chillers, will use a fan blowing the top of the water. A lid would trap heat, so while a tank with a lid won't hurt them, I'd be sure to use a chiller on a lidded tank, and test ph, alkalinity and salinity often.
@SeahorseWhisperer
@SeahorseWhisperer 6 жыл бұрын
As far as a light, as long as you don't have anything else in the tank that requires light, you could get away with just using the room light. However, seahorses' breeding and feeding cycles revolve around "day and night". They need light to know it's "day", and darkness to get rest during their "night".

Dee From Brooklyn do you mean tank size? Dwarfs need smaller tanks :). Is that what you’re thinking of?

Seahorse Whisperer i thought the smaller tank worked better as they were such messy eaters and harder to feed.
@SeahorseWhisperer

That's actually why the bigger the tank, the better. More room for error. Left over food (or the um......resulting....waste, lol) will be a much bigger problem, much more quickly in a smaller tank, with less water volume. If I pour 3 shots of vodka into a 2-liter of sprite, I could drink all night without stumbling. But, if i pour 3 shots of vodka into an 8 ounce bottle of sprite....trouble there will be. Even though it's the same amount of vodka, it will affect my system much more quickly and potently in with less dilution.

yeah....I probably should have come up with a better example. hahahaha. Out of 7+ seahorse systems and 1 reef, only the reef and 1 sh display have substrate. This helps with seeing anything that needs to be removed. I also use pumps and wavemakers that shut off for 10 min during feeding, to keep the food in one place. The "seahorses need low flow" idea is way outdated, so once the pumps come back on.....i'll see anything that I did miss. I also keep tons of snails.....just in case. My seahorses are pigs, so there's never any leftovers anyways, but you get the idea. Even the 30g per pair of seahorses is pushing it in my opinion. It is the minimum, and can be done, but a lot more water changes are required to keep up with all the food. I can't think of any keeper who hasn't eventually upgraded.

Bruh I just killed an angelfish and the other two are literally catatonic staring at one spot... Soo I definitely don’t trust myself with a seahorse. All the aquarium workers I spoke to said I’d don’t do anything wrong 🙄

I really want to get a herd of seahorses! How do you control breeding? Is it possible to keep separate gender tanks? From the sound of it, it sounds like they breed like rabbits lol. I read that you can separate genders, but they might not be as happy as they pair up and bond. Just wanted your opinion
@SeahorseWhisperer
@SeahorseWhisperer 2 жыл бұрын
Completely depends on your goals. There ARE methods to control breeding and separate gender tanks are possible for sure. We talk about this a lot on Wine Wednesday (our weekly livestream at 8pm est) but I believe you're asking more about separating species for breeding purposes, and learning how to condition them? If that's what your asking, respond so I can provide a more in depth answer.

Saying that if you add ammonia to an empty tank and it doesn’t clear within a day that you need to add more biological filtration is not correct. Multiple variables could affect this, how long the tank has been running, what the empty tanks bioload is(have you been feeding the nitrifying bacteria) and the amount of ammonia you add relative to the bioload. The bacteria doesn’t exist in the filtration media for the fun of it, it requires food. If you tank an empty tank and add more ammonia than it’s used to the bacteria that processes the ammonia into nitrite will need time to increase to deal with the extra load. Then the bacteria that processes nitrite to nitrate will need to do the same. Extra filtration is good but adding it for no reason is just expensive which puts people of saltwater aquariums. Consistent bioload test will show if your tank has cycled.

i could not agree more. Can you tell me where in the video it says this? We have a redesigned website with a complete video how to guide that includes exactly what you just described (the need to feed the bacteria). But, I would still like to correct any mistakes and appreciate your comment to help.
