You may have seen the video when I bought this lovely machine a few months ago. I named her "Nancy". This machine was serviced prior to my first use by -
Jaycotts, Unit D2, Chester Trade Park, Chester, CH1 4LT
www.jaycotts.co.uk
In this video I demonstrate how to thread this 1939 machine, load and prepare the bobbin and do a first test. My apologies if the camera shakes a bit, I was trying to get as close as I could to show you how it works. She sews smoothly, cleanly and quietly - perfect.
Thanks for watching, please like and subscribe for free so you don't miss anything. I'll be sewing a Patchwork quilt top with this machine soon.

Great simple instructive video. Im getting my singer out tomorrow and i have some canvas chairsbacks that need patching and reinforcement. Time to get sewing. At last! Thanks

I have one of these, I use it all the time and I love it. I've used it to make all sorts of large and small projects, most recently a patchwork quilt for my bed.. I find electric machines scary and fast, I love old vintage things and the gentle pace I can go with this machine, it's. brilliant, reliable and elegant.

Thank you so much for this. I read the instructions on my great aunts hand cranked singer but struggled to get the bobbin to thread to the foot. I normally use my mums old side loading machine and haven't used this one in over 20 years. It's working perfectly and I've been able to shorten and add some reinforcement to my motorbike jeans which I've desperately needed to do.

Update Maggie. First canvas patch sewn across canvas chair back. Strong as anything and even though it’s very tired in the middle, the patch take’s the strain to the sides which are good. So it’s safe to sit on and lean on. ( army folding chair). Thanks to your vid I got the cotton routed right and the bobbin installed correctly. Messed with the tensioner a bit and have nice even stitches. Had the machine twenty years, my missus has said on numerous occasions you don’t use it get rid. I always said I’ll use it at some point. And now I have and she’s quite impressed. I can see a load of jobs being thought of now! Cheers!!

This video is so helpful! I’ve inherited my later grandma’s antique Singer machine which doesn’t have any instructions so I’ve been doing a lot of research. KZbin has been very good and your video is the best one. Thank you. I agree that it sounds beautiful. Modern sewing machines are so loud but this beauty just taps along ever so quietly.

I used to have one of these, I bought it from a guy in Llandudno who was still running his little shop in his 90s. I'm just renovating a Regency Mansion and I've mentioned in most videos I need a curtain maker! I need my sewing machine back! :)

I just bought my first vintage Singer, a 99 as well. I watched a lot of KZbin videos. I heard about 2 ways to do a back tack.( turn the fabric twice by 180 degrees.// Lift the foot, move the fabric back 2 stitches and continue.) But that's the first time that I hear just to turn the handle anti-clock wise. I thought I shouldn't revers the handle movement. I will try it.

I can't get my flywheel to disengage. I mean I can get it to turn towards me, but the needle still goes up and down, making filling up a bobbin kinda difficult. Any ideas what the issue could be? I am familiar with machines. I know how to disengage a flywheel but this one doesn't seem to want to.

Does it use just any needles? My computerized domestic sewing machine needs servicing. It’s been giving me a headache. I’ve got this sewing machine which was given to me when my grandmother passed. Her singer sewing machine looks exactly like this, also hand cranking to operate it, but I really don’t know anything about it lol

Interesting question. I tried to use an unbranded Universal needle, but the attachment was wrong. Each needle at the top has a rounded and flat side and it wouldn't slot in position as the guage was too big. I haven't tried with any other brands that might work. For most items I now go straight to Singer, as I've wasted money on cheaper brands. Hope that helps.

Thank you for doing this video. I recently bought a 1920s singer sewing machine. I can’t find a manual for this machine. Your video was helpful. Do you know where to get a manual

I'd search Ebay or a Google search to see if anyone has a manual for your machine. I wonder whether it would be helpful to photograph some of the pages of the manual for my 99K? On holiday at present, but I might do that when I return.

I just got an old one like this and i was wondering , does it come with a pedal? And if yes please explain how to plug the pedal into the machine itself as i think im missing a cable. I have a pedal with it but other than the cable that you'd use to plug the pedal in , i don't have any others to use on the machine to actually use the pedal thing. Thank you xoxo

Sorry, but I don't have any knowledge or experience with a Vintage machine with pedals. There are many interesting KZbin videos out there though and if you keep looking and asking you might eventually get the answer you need. Happy hunting.

I bought my machine 2nd hand from Ebay and decided to have it serviced before I used it. That cost about £55 and was worth every penny. Perhaps a service might help as it may need internal parts cleaning and oiling. Hope this helps!

Can yu please teach me as my stitches are not neat. The upper stitches are neat but the bottoms one is full with threads.I don’t know how to fix. Thanks.
@thecheshirecrafter4522
@thecheshirecrafter4522 Жыл бұрын
It depends where the threads are - if at the beginning of the stitching it looks like a birds nest on the reverse try 3 things a) thread your needle with the presser foot up as this can affect the tension b) make sure your bobbin is threaded correctly with both top and bobbin threads held together towards the back of the machine before you start sewing. c) Use a piece of scrap fabric as a leader or ender at the beginning or end of stitching your fabric. If it looks "loopy" on the reverse try altering your tension. On this machine it's very delicate, try turning the tension spool above the presser foot clockwise or anticlockwise and keep testing until it looks right. Hard to explain - perhaps I'll do another short video to show you. Look out for that in the next few days. Hope this helps.

I’m confused. What handle for back stitch?
@thecheshirecrafter4522
@thecheshirecrafter4522 Ай бұрын
@Kelsey-s1z Turn the handle away from you (clockwise) to acheive a forward stitch. If you turn the handle towards you ( anti-clockwise) to acheive a back stitch. My machine's not keen to do a back stitch. Hope this helps.

I don't know where you could post a photo. I suggest you Google UK sewing machine manufacturers - the most prolific were Singer, Jones, Brother as they may have a historical record of their machines and possibly archives with photos.

You do know that replacement electric motors are readily available, whoever serviced your machines should have known this and advised of the cost to replace it for you. Under £70 for a new motor, belt & foot controller, plus the cost of fitting.
