Properly detailed and clear as ever... Especially using same pump (accuracy is a factor of consistency), and that reattaching pump drops pressure ONLY because air fills the pump (you do not loose pressure on fork when removing pumps)

So much good info here, will need to try this next time I ride. My Yari felt harsh so I dropped the pressure from 100 to 60 still gets good sag but rebound and compression is completely open now. However it seems that I have lost feedback and control somewhat. Will try these recommendations to see if I can find a good compromise between comfort and control.
@9unner223 жыл бұрын
Rebound is linked to rider weight and distribution, something neither this guy nor many others ever mention. Heavier rider(and or more weight on a specific shock) = more open (less damping) & Vice versa. I.e. Average weight rider / bike, flat terrain, neutral balanced stance = central clicks (front & rear) Heavier downhill rider = more open front rebound and comparitively closed rear. Lighter XC (uphill) rider = slightly faster open rear, slightly slower closed front... Etc.
@chiccorocker4 жыл бұрын
Indeed being consistent in the way you measure sag on the front is really the key for a good setup. I find myself really struggling with the usual methods. If you lean over the front you rarely do it the same amount. Easy to verify: measure the sag 3 - 5 times in a row without doing any change and I would be surprised if you get the same numbers all the times. For me that doesn't happen at all and it caused me wrong setups in the past. Maybe sitting on the top tube nearer the front could yield more consistent results. But another way I'm experimenting with now is simply pumping down the fork with my upper body weight while standing on the side of the bike. This seems to give me much more consistent and reproducible results compared to sag as to find the correct setup. I know I need about 50% travel when pumping down and this gives me a fairly good starting point with the pressure and this also happens to match what RockShox suggests, so I think I'm on the right path. The rear is much easier and consistent with sag measurements, just put your full weight on the saddle, done.
@camwells97264 жыл бұрын
Yeah I don’t obsess over the sag set , ( trying to measure ) due to the variations you can get , I do a bit initially to get it close , but then go off feel as I adjust to get it right

Great video! When you talk about setting rebound by turning the knob to the right, does this mean looking onto the knob from a top (on the bike) or bottom viewpoint?
@mrsmartypants_14 жыл бұрын
Bottom viewpoint. From bottom viewpoint turning rebound all the way right (ie clockwise) fully closes it - makes rebound very slow. Clockwise on my Rockshox Lyric is indicated by the turtle 🐢 icon. My Lyric has 20 clicks from fully open (rabbit) to fully closed. So to set mine I fully close it and then back it off 9 clicks counter-clockwise for general riding. If I’m taking a big jump line flow trail I click it 4 more times to the right to slow rebound way down to prevent getting bucked forward (over the bars).

I've had the base setting from rockshox for a few rides now( 1 token, 100psi middle clicks of rebound) and I've blown through the travel a few times which isn't bad i dont think yet my small bump compliance is next to nothing. Feel like I have loads of stickion on the first part of travel. Im going to play with all the settings and put another token in and drop the psi to 80 and see how i get on.

I just want to know if I take the all travel spacers out if that let's the forks go lower before bottoming out or if the spacers stop the fork from extending more. I want more travel but don't want them going lower, as it is they go down only leaving 50mm or so of exposed shaft at bottom out, spacer should be 50mm in mine, so if they just let the forks go lower before bottoming out, I'll be almost smashing the top and bottom since there wouldn't be any exposed shaft anymore, plus I can't see the geometry of going 50mm lower when bottoming out being comfortable but if it prevents the forks from extending all the way and doesn't affect bottoming out then that would be great. (2k8 Specialized RHcomp29er w/Tora 318 solo air, bike specs say 80mm, service manual shows 80mm 100mm 130mm as options). I'd have to assume that the spacer isn't just basically a bottom out bump stop as then it seems like a totally useless feature but maybe it is just a gimmick? I can see manufacturers liking being able to adjust, limiting the travel as to not have it compete with other products with more travel? But if it's just a gimmick then I also get it being preset to 80mm as more might just suck..? Doesn't seem right but then I read about people intentionally limiting their travel, which I can understand in some scenarios like light xc or street riding if you don't need the travel but otherwise I wonder if it's done for better feel/performance because the max setting sucks? Hard to tell from the service manual pics and while I've torn apart and built lots of bikes and all their parts, the one thing I've never done is take apart forks but they're overdue for maintenance anyway and I'd love me a bit more travel for free as long as it doesn't kill performance or only result in going closer to the ground.. I never even knew any forks had such an option until looking at rebuilding them last day, didn't even know uturn was an option (though from what I can tell that just preloads a spring to make it shorter/longer to adjust travel which I can't see being as smooth/linear as air) .. also apparently I can put the argyle moco in to add floodgate adjustment also but I think that precludes the possibility of having a remote adjust/lockout upgrade which the tora can be upgraded for..never had a fork with floodgate adjustment so I dunno if it's worth it but it sounds interesting and I like tuning (I build and tune cars and engines) and apparently one can at least semi hack adjust the tora fg by using some creativity and plastic but.. and I'm not even fully clear on what the adjustment does, seems like it adjusts oil flowrate above/below piston? So would sorta adjust how fast compression/rebound could be? On cars, a ton is dictated by your springs not just dampers and air is rare especially in performance stuff but some dampers have a bypass adjust which sounds similar to floodgate adjust?

I don't know if my eyes are failing me or he was using two different bikes with very different travel on the forks? One looked like about a 100mm travel and the other much longer, maybe a 160mm? 20% sag seems awful low to me but maybe that's more appropriate for that short travel fork. I have a Lyrik 170mm and RockShox's manual says to go for 30%-40% sag. Probably too model specific for this though. The video was very helpful, I think I can get my fork dialed in really well after watching this.
