How to Set up Custom Modes and When To Use Them

All you need to know about custom modes.
Never heard of custom modes? Here is why you should use custom modes and how to set up custom modes. Also depending on your camera, you can set the custom modes to change with a single button. I'll show you how to set up custom modes on canon cameras, but it can be applied to most camera brands.

Use my c1 for low light sports, c2 slower iso for non action shots coaches and people slower shutter speed. It takes a while to set up for all your settings are saved, af auto focus types, anti flicker. Not just iso, shutter speed and aperture. Take your time setting it up.

I like that Idea of using them for a few different shots within one game. Much easier than trying to keep switching though the settings

Very quick and hard to follow at the end, because you know what you are doing, but for first time, I need a little clearer help... Is it possible to have one button switch between the 'Custom' modes, C1, C2 and C3 without the other modes?

Hi Kenneth, Thanks for watching and asking the question. Unfortunately I'm not sure if you can switch between just two of the modes. I'll have to look into the settings to make sure. But I know I cycle through all of them when switching on my R5.

Z9 shooter here. Does anyone know how to assign shooting banks to a button in the Z system? This seems super useful.

There should be a way on the Nikon. A friend that shoots Nikon is the one that told me about being able to change settings with one button.

Dont laugh. I set up C1-C3 for birds, sports and I already forgot what my third one is. If I dont use them for a while, I cant just go to the one I want because I forget which one is which. They need some kind of ID for old forgetful people like me. One other important thing I found on my R6 custom settings. Maybe the custom setting needs tweaking for one reason or another. I make the change and the first time my camera sleeps or I turn it off for some reason it reverts back to the original setting I had entered. I found I had to go into camera settings to set the camera to accept any tweaking it needs and saves the change.

That would be helpful to label each custom setting! One down side if you aren't using them a ton. Which is probably why I'm mainly using it to switch to slow shutter and back.

There should be a setting such as 'auto update settings' within the custom shoot menu which will constantly update your custom modes with the changes you make within them; at least that's what's available for the R5, hope this helps

Some of the newer camera allow you to label the Custom Modes and allow you to Auto Update Settings - certainly the Lumix S5ii and the MFT G9ii have these functions.
