Jason, I can't thank you enough. Got my DJI Mic yesterday and although I have extensive experience with the lot of the RODE range and also various other brands, that's my first kit with receiver gain option. The first thing I did was to lower the camera preamp as low as possible, as I always do when gain staging, then set the TX to +6 which sounded acceptable with no hiss/distortion. The receiver gain was the pickle, I set it to +12 in order to preserve the low preamp gain and the sound was fantastic (I did compare it with 4 other mics in the process), BUT the doubt if I have done it correctly was still with me. I have watched most of the related videos available for the past 24 hours and you are the only one to make a note of the receiver gain role. Thank you so much for the reassurance, I am off to the gym (it's 3am lol) to film my next episode with the exciting new microphone set!:) Excellent channel, + sub!

Great video jason. Question, I have an FX3 would it work to connect the receiver into the XLR input (using a mini jack adapter of course). I'd rather have the full buttons controls on the XLR module of the FX3 rather than file with menus on the camera for gain etc...

Thanks for this tutorial. Super straightforward. How do I get the DJI microphone audio to record onto the video file..or does this setup ensure it does that? Tried recording with my Sony EV10 and the audio on the video file was quite bad as it picked up lots of background sound. I hadn't amplified any receiver gain. Any tips?

Thanks :) The mics in the transmitters are omnidirectional so they pick up sounds from all around, you can get lav mics that you plug into the transmitters that are not omni directional which might help a bit as well - also check out this vid if you haven't already for a deep dive kzbin.info/www/bejne/amTGeoRujrCLbtU

Yes if you also record sound to the iPhone video and then sync it in post using the matching audio.

Jaason, If I have this right, adjust transmitter gain first to ping -12 , then w/ Sony cam level set to 1 set receiver gain to ping -12 level & boost cam level past 1 if needed. Is there a max level the transmitter gain should not go past you think? Thanks for this.

Hi Phil, that's what I'm doing on my a7S III - lower camera setting and higher receiver gain setting - you need to experiment a bit to find what combination works better for your camera :)

Hi! I recently bought the DJI Mic and I believe that the quality of the backup recording is better and cleaner than the sound which goes into the camera. Do you know why this might be happening? I tested it with my sony a6300 and FX30 (same results). Also I tried it with my Zoom H5 and the sound is amazing (same quality as the backup recording) 🤔 Thanks for your videos!

Hi, the backup recording goes straight from the mic (with some amplification etc) into the files on the transmitter. The sound in the video files on the camera also go via wireless transmission + down the wire from the receiver into the camera + through the cameras amplification and finally encoded into the video files audio - this means there are more steps and more processing any of which could be degrading the sound quality.

That's strange - I don't have an a7m3 to test - you could try a different cable and make sure there's not a setting on the camera to choose between internal and external mic.

Hi, it sounds like the cable from the receiver to camera was not setup or working correctly. You should see the audio meters on the receiver and camera moving up and down when you are talking.

I just picked up the dji microphone and run a sony s7aiii. I have a rode videomic pro+. Can i spit 3.5mm jack to the in on the camera and run the both setups? The rodes needs the power from the camera and the dji doesn't.

Never tried that but in theory it could work - I don't think the rode needs camera power - that's only for the auto on/off - you can just manually turn on the rode.

Did you just get a splitter that split the stereo signal into 2 stereo signals? Like this one www.amazon.com/Gold-Plated-Connector-Splitter-RFAdapter-Headphone/dp/B096XNHTH3 you could try plug this into the camera and then connect the rode to the red and dji out to the white - you would then get rode on the red (right) and dji on the white (left) - if it works please let us know :) :)

Hi Brandon, the mic receiver doesn't know when you press record on your camera. The auto record is to do with the internal recording on the transmitters and it should start when you power on the transmitter.

You have to press record on the DJI receiver or transmitter to start internal recording on the transmitters - it does not start automatically when you press record on the camera.

If you mean the hotshoe adapter where you slot in the receiver you would have to check on the specific model but a lot of cameras do have them

They solved it with the DJI Mic 2 and the Sony Mi Shoe adapter for Alpha Cameras (from what I know the compatible cameras are the A7III, A7IV, ZV-E10, FX3, FX30, A7SIII and A6400/6700
