How to Set up Graphics Tablet Express Keys on Microsoft OneNote

In this video, I'll show you how to customize the time-saving graphics tablet express keys (hotkeys) on Microsoft OneNote. If you are teaching online with Microsoft OneNote and your graphics tablet, you need to watch this video. Believe me, you will like it.

At first thanks for this infomative video. I found a way to use eraser and Pen with one Pen Button. You can adjust the Quick Access bar with an eraser and with finger drawing symbol. The Quick Access bar allows you to assign an eraser and with the switch button, you can use the pen.

I have a Huion H640P and its software doesn't allow me to input a command such as Alt + D N M to a single button, it only allows me to input a string of commands that only has one letter/number in it like Alt + 1 or Alt + E. I solved this by using a quick access toolbar that shows me my preferred pens/actions/etc. on top, below the ribbon area. The best part is that these buttons have commands that fit my software limitations! For example, the 1st quick access tool I chose is the Eraser and its command is Alt + 1, so I placed that command on my Pen button and now I can do everything else in this video! You can enable your quick access toolbar by right-clicking on the ribbon > Customize the Ribbon > Quick Access Toolbar > Add/Remove your preferred tools. From there you can see all the corresponding numbers for your respective tools by holding the Alt key. Hope this helps someone. Thanks!

Hi Nir sorry for the late response. I couldn’t check the comments during the holiday. I am back :) Maybe you already bought one but J will write what I think about active area. active area is really depends on what you want. If you have a budget and a big desk, enough space to put a big graphics tablet, buy a big size. Bigger sizes are better to work on details. Mediums are also good. For small desks, they are super convinient to use. I use medium size for almost 3 years. but i dont like small sizes. Actually there js no biiiig difference but my monitor is pretty large, thats why small sizes are not convinient. If your laptop is less than 13 inches, you can also ho with small size tablets. Thanks for the tutorial! Is there anyway to use the pan hand and scroll with the pen? The keyboard shortcut works, but it only scrolls with the mouse. When I move the pen onto the tablet, it returns to eraser or pen . Could we set it up so that the tablet acts like the scroll?

Actually, I just figured it out. If you create shortcuts for pen, eraser, and pan, you can do "Open OneNote > Click on ‘File’ > Options > Click on ‘Advanced’ button > Under ‘Pen’ options, uncheck the option ‘Automatically switch between inking, selecting, typing, and panning’." Then, when you click pan, you can "scroll" with your pen on the tablet

Hi Avinash, both tablets are good but I like inspoiroy dial more for a few reasons: 1. It is wireless, no cables around. (it has its own battery and when you use with the phone, it doesnt consume your phones battery) 2. It has the dial. It is not useful for mobile phones but it is useful if you want to teach online with a computer. 3. Better pen, better pen holder.

Thanks so much. This was a really helpful video! I've tried to assign Alt + DT to be able to quickly go back to typing mode, but onenote doesn't seem to like that. It just opens that Draw menu but doesn't select the Text tool and the cursor icon doesn't change. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? I am double clicking, but it makes no difference. :(

I wish to use OneNote for Window 10, but unfortunately could not set the express keys like what you have shown us, though I could do it in OneNote that comes with Office 365. I’ve downloaded the latest driver for the Huion HS611 tablet, so my driver menu doesn’t look like yours and it won’t allow me to add multiple key commands to a single button. For instance it only lets me add “Alt+D,” not “Alt+D+E+K” to get to my stroke eraser in OneNote... any suggestions for how to get around this?

I did the same, honestly, I'd just recommend uninstalling the drivers and installing the old ones... the new drivers don't seem to have many good features and aren't really easy to use. The only good feature I really saw that was unique to the new drivers is the custom layout per application. I can't find it on the old drivers, and that actually would be useful. I personally prefer to use an eraser though...

acctually you can do something so u can pick the different colors directly. First you open another menu (Near to start" then u add all the pencils you need ro this menu band. Then you press alt+ "The letter for the menu" and then u can klick another letter to take the colors instantly

Your video is very helpful, I set up the huion tablet with onenote 2016 but I still have some issues with Panning hand tool and Type tool. Sometimes when I use the pen this functions make the whole program locked, I can't pick any other tool. The hand (if I use it with the pen) looks like fist and is not able to loose. Then I press esc and it switches to Type and again I can't pick Draw or any other tool? When I use the normal mouse it doesn't happen. What can be wrong? Maybe I should use pen in a mouse mode, not in Windows Ink?

I agree this should be fixed. However, in OneNote 2016, you can put commands in the Quick Access Toolbar and then access them as keyboard shortcuts Alt+1, Alt+2,... The Huinon driver will accept these shortcuts. This won't work in OneNote for Windows 10 (which has other problems as well).

Hi, I would like to ask you for advice. :) I bought Wacom Intuos S and I want to use it for writing my creative ideas (in letters mostly), but my handwriting on the tablet is terrible. I have a laptop with Windows and I tried one note app. So do you know how to improve my handwriting through some feature app to plug into One note app or another app that can make my handwriting nice a smooth? Also if you have some tips for apps for writing and taking notes I would appreciate it. Thank you for your help :)

Hi Prasek, the only remedy is the time and practice. It is like getting used to a keyboard. After you spend some time, you will get used to it. Most people spend 2 weeks for that. And then you will feel like a pro. A few things can help you tho. You can Zoom in and write bigger. And also you can create striped lines and use the lines as a guide. Practice, practice, practice. Btw wacom intuos is a good choice. Hope to hear your good news soon :)

Thank you for your video. I have a Huion KAMVAS Pro 16 and was searching for a solution to add the eraser to the pen buttons. Your video led me to an even better solution. If you add your favourite pen and eraser to the quick access toolbar, you can use those shortcuts to programme the pen buttons to flip between pen and eraser. For me, the black pen is Alt + 6 and the eraser is Alt + 09. Maybe this can be helpful to someone else.

FYI, This unfortunately doesn’t work anymore on the newest Huion driver 15.3.19.174, as it doesn’t allow to assign more than one letter as a Shortcut. (I.e. “CTRL+S” [allowed], “CTRL+DE” [Can’t be registered] ) Unless I’m missing something, any help would be highly appreciated!, thanks for making all of these videos, these are *essential* on the times we live in and very very helpful

Gaomon s620 is not compatible with oneNote, because the hot keys can only save a combination of two buttons. In OneNote you Need more. If you close the driver, you have useful functions in the pen, but you can’t use the hotkeys anymore.

I solved the issue, you need to donwload OneNote with the year in the name, like OneNote 2016. He said it in the video but I didn't think it was important.

Havent tried it there but a similar configuration should work there. You can try using alt key and the shortcuts.

don't buy these Chinese tablets because they make the shortcuts very stupid. those shortcuts only work for Microsoft OneNote, but if you're using OneNote Windows 10, which most people do, the shortcuts will not work.
