I'm Aja Dang and this video is all about how to build sinking funds for both monthly bills and trips! Saving up for things in advance is the best way to stay on financial track, especially if it's for a huge expense like a vacation/wedding/car. Thanks to Empower for sponsoring this video and download the Empower app using my link: bit.ly/Empower...
Empower is the money management app I’ve been using for a few years now. I trust the Empower Card* with my sinking funds, and I recommend you try it out because you get paid up to 2 days faster^, earn cashback up to 10%†, and can count on Cash Advance up to $250** with no interest or late fees if you’re ever in a jam between paychecks.

† Cashback deals on Empower Card purchases, including categories, merchants, and percentages, will vary and must be selected in the app. Cashback will be applied automatically when the final transaction posts, which may be up to a week after the qualifying purchase.

Just to reiterate - you do not need to have sinking funds for your monthly bills - I am a psycho. Focus on things that are most important to you. But please also remember, your sinking fund is NOT your emergency fund. Those are two different things with different purposes.

You're such a boss, thank you Aja! I really put my money into a proper system last year, because of you. I'm reaping the benefits now, being without income for months, and having my emergency fund and sinking funds saving my ass. Also I am taken ABACK by the cost of destination weddings - the balls it takes to encourage people to spend this kind of money 👀 I of course don't know the situation or full story, but just in general... That's a shit ton of money 🙈

I can understand why Aja has a sinking fund for her bills - with the type of work she does, her income must fluctuate monthly. But for someone like me - who’s income is the same every single month and will only change if there is an emergency like illness or losing the job and then an EF would be used, a sinking fund for bills is unnecessary. My sinking funds are for home maintenance, a new-to-me car, travel, and then this lump account for gifts, holidays, annual things like flood insurance, auto insurance, car registration, car maintenance etc. Not nearly as organized as Aja but it works for me. :) Sinking funds really do relieve a lot of stress.

I need to have a sinking fund just for eating out 😅 I cook at home often but those restaurants and eating out trips definitely add up especially with this summer weather when i want to go out every weekend. I just started putting money away in my vacation account and it’s great because I’m leaving for Cape Cod this weekend and I’m happy I have money put aside for it. I love budgeting and saving money, so this is fun for me When I go on vacation I hate penny pinching. I put enough aside so that I can enjoy my vacation rather than stressing about paying for every little thing 😓 I like to spend money on experiences/food so i always have a large cushion for those categories.

I don’t know, I am torn about sinking funds. I get it when you’re first getting started, someone like you with unpredictable monthly income, or a larger goal of course. Your point about prepaying bills makes sense if you can get a discount. Otherwise I’d rather just cashflow things as they come up and get the money working in the market instead of sitting in a bank account waiting…but really helpful explanations, thanks for a great video!

I've just been calling sinking funds "subsavings" because my credit union allows me to open as many subsavings as I want for free and I can name them whatever I want. Got my first double-digit per hour job this year and immediately set up automatic distributions for any "excess" income to the subsavings/sinking funds, each of which is named after a goal (I have....11? I think? Everything from car maintenance/repair to clothing to travel to wedding decor/vendors/bride&groom expenses). It's been SUCH a lifesaver. And of course I'm working on my emergency fund too. If it's a goal with an endpoint, like the wedding, I already have plans for what to rename the subsavings when the goal is reached.

Random question - I want to get into sinking funds now after paying off my student loan debt. How do I set this up - do I take the money needed for the sinking fund from the money I would sent towards my emergency fund or do I take the money from my "spending money for the month"? I currently calculated to have 450€ to spend for myself (grocerys, eating out etc) and 1250€ for my emergency fund. If I were to take 50€ a month for a sinking fund, where would I reduce money?
@nataliewong5291
@nataliewong5291 3 жыл бұрын
i think this is up to you. it depends on how quickly you want to build up your emergency fund and your sinking funds. you can definitely take out a portion from the money that you would put into your emergency fund to put into your sinking funds, but this is really up to your comfort level. if you want to build up your emergency funds asap, then maybe focusing on that first might be better, and then you can focus on building your sinking funds. hope this helps!

I'm a huge fan of sinking funds because of you! I am trying to implement this in my own life, and I feel like I'm overthinking some of the logistics lol. Do ALL of your sinking funds go into that one account, and you divvy it up yourself? Or do you have multiple accounts for your Christmas, wedding, and bills savings, etc? I find myself overwhelmed with the amount of savings and checking accounts that I feel like I want to open up to keep all of my goals separated, but I'm not sure if that's necessary! 😬

I love the idea of sinking fund. I already saved money for my shopping season (Thanksgiving and Xmas). With this, I will not overspend (that is very often for everyone). However, I don't get the point of sinking funds for the internet or other utilities. I think these costs should be included in the emergency fund. Am I correct? In addition, just leave your money in the bank (even high yield bank) is not a great idea. I want to put this kind of money to my investment account. Overall, I love the idea and do it every day but for just some specific stuff.

do you still utilize the qapital app?

I asked the same thing but my comment was never posted. I’m guessing she no longer used it. I cancelled my Qapital account because the customer service is HORRIBLE. I was never able to get my funding account linked and none of my support tickets were resolved. Different agents kept closing my support tickets with no comments or updates. I got fed up and asked that they close my account immediately. It’s a shame too because I was really excited about using the app.

My bf and I missed a wedding this year because of how expensive it is to fly there, food, drinks, clothes, room, and driving - we were like no lol. Destination weddings are beautiful, but man these times are hard for it
