23:53 Guys, the AE lock button for your second (pan) settings only works if you don't use back button focus. If you do, you'll have to choose another button to configure otherwise it'll near impossible to focus unless you can split your thumb in two. I have set mine to the depth of field button.

Don't worry Mark, there is a learning curve with mirrorless but the quality and options of the R5 and R3 are just mind blowing. I do prefer the R5 for the ability to crop more but the R3 is a great camera. Just be patient with yourself !
@MarkKerton10 ай бұрын
Agree. The crop factor on the 5 is outstanding and great for my long pulls for stock imagery. The R3 is perfect for the 70-200 on the whole. I’m enjoying learning my way around mirrorless👍🏻

Top job as always matey. One thing to be aware of is if you shoot in silent mode it turns off the flash and therefore won’t trigger remotes….as I found out at Leeds the other week…doh….user error….again lol.
@iamdantephotography556510 ай бұрын
What I found is if you shoot Electronic you can turn the shutter volume down to 0 so it’s “electronic silent shutter” but not silent shutter and you still get to flash!!!! Yellow wrench menu page 2 Volume.

Thanks for the case 4 settings which I'll try out for sports where multiple players are occurring. I've had good luck with case 2 but was even starting to even slow down the AF sensitivity closer to what you have described. I wished the firmware had a method to easily switch between two FPS modes, so action vs an individual fan but for me I've configured the video button to show the fps choices and quickly change. Totally agree on the EVF waking up, missed a lot of shots vs 1dx that was ready to go.

Yes, the shutter “wake up” lag can be a pain sometimes! I press on the way to my eye and it seems to be ready when I compose. Thanks for watching

Thanks Mark. I'm still with my 1DX but hopefully this will come in useful in the not-too-distant. I shoot mainly sport and some performance art. I could only stretch to a single R body; would you recommend the R3, R5 or R6 II? Cheers
@MarkKerton10 ай бұрын
Hi Col. for quality it has to be the R5. For sport and big fps go R3. Not had a go with the 6ii but heard it’s impressive👍🏻

Thanks Mark. tbh I'm a bit put off by the rolling shutter reports of the R5. Should I be?
@enri_19869 ай бұрын
I’m a student and I shoot to make a few bucks but mostly because it’s my hobby. Went from the 1DIV ->1Dx ->1DxII ->R6II. I switched to mirrorless a month after buying the 1DxII when I knew I needed to buy a 70-200 again. Plus the camera wasn’t an upgrade from my original 1Dx, I found no difference in stills or the autofocus. The R6II pairs wonderfully with the RF 70-200 2.8. I can fit my 70-200 stuck to the body along with my 35 & 85mm 1.4 primes in a single Think Tank Retro 7M. I will add a 15-35 2.8 into the mix and I’m pretty confident it will fit. I don’t crop heavily or do BIF so the R6 II was an easy choice.

The drawback of turning "Silent shutter function" to "ON" is that when you turn off the camera the mechanical shutter will not close (as that would make noise) thus leaving the sensor exposed to dust. To avoid this and get the same effect, I set "Silent shutter function" to "OFF" and set the "Volume" in the yellow menu 2 for all items to the minimum (which turns them off). So there will be no noise when shooting, but the mechanical shutter will close and protect the sensor when turning the camera off. Hope this helps!?

That is a brilliant point, and thanks for bringing that up. I will mention this in the next video, as I’m sure there are quite a few photographers that are not aware of this issue!👍🏻👍🏻

Hi Mark , great content as always . I guess your interested in the East Yorks stages thats coming soon , its not my cup of tea but great to see entry is about full . Cos I work for RSD in Malton our main interest is the British Historic Championship which kicks off next Sunday with the Riponian Stages . Hope our latest spec Fiat 131 can hold its own .

Ah hi mate. Thanks for reminding me about the Riponian. I’ll try and get to it if I can. Will hopefully be at the East Riding Tarmac stages couple of weeks after all being well. Talking historic, well not quite but I was glued to the online live coverage from the RAC back in November! Hoping to get to a stage or two next time round in 25🤞🏻 Good luck with the fiat anyway, I’ll be keeping an eye one the times👍🏻

When doing the color space setting you said RGB but the camera showed sRGB. Which one did you mean?
@JGZphotography10 ай бұрын
I use cRAW to shoot to the main 512 GB CFexpress card and JPG (M) to the second SD for emergency backup. Half the file size while maintaining full resolution of 24 MP and the dynamic range. Noise is reduced using the Luminace slider in Adobe Camera RAW. I also use the HIGH temp off instead of Standard. This gives the camera more tolerance to generated heat before shutting off. This was a firmware update over a year ago. I had one of my R3s shut down due to the summer heat, but not anymore with the higher setting. The R3, like other R cameras, is deeply flexible. I am sometimes still fussing around with alternate settings after two years. Everyone will have their own methods for different photography genres.

While I also shoot sports (mainly tennis), I always shoot in RAW. I do not find that the larger file size is a noteworthy disadvantage (and I can take advantage, if needed, of having the raw data available for editing - although most of the time it I do not need it, but for the 5% of the time where I need it (because I messed up with the exposure settings in camera), I find it worthwhile dealing with a larger image file sizes). In addition, I strongly rely on the "camera raw filter" for editing photos, so opening RAW files and going through the "camera raw" functionality is of no drawback to me and seamlessly integrates into my personal workflow.
@MarkKerton10 ай бұрын
Interesting👍🏻 My mane question I guess is, do you send live during the tennis or other sports and what are your images used for? my images will only ever hit a magazine at best and quality wise, JPG images are fine for that. Plus of course, trying to send out raw images, Pitchside would be a nightmare for speed!
@cdiderich10 ай бұрын
@@MarkKerton, I send live jpeg (quality set to 10) files from the camera to an assigned editor. I am typically using 5G via my iPhone or Ethernet (when offered in the stadium) with no problem. Sometimes I even crop in camera if I want a specific crop and time permits (usually possible during changeover in tennis). When doing so, I am working for an agency that redistributes to newspapers, magazines, etc. Speed is required to ensure that they have images before the end of the game (very often the selection is first-come first-served, versus image content). I shoot jpeg/raw combined so that I have a raw copy if and when needed. I have never transmitted raw files (I have tried at home and it works fine) as I have nobody (apart from me) who is interested in raw files.
@careylee59512 ай бұрын
Can you explain why you shoot in JPEG?
@MarkKerton2 ай бұрын
There’s no need for big file sizes in editorial. Plus jpg is so much quicker to process and when printed editors only need 300dpi👍🏻
@careylee59512 ай бұрын
@@MarkKerton I'm a rodeo photographer and unlike yourself my indoor venues have very poor lighting (iso 12800) I can see why you use jpg as you are in a venue that has lighting made for television. yes editing over 3000 photos can be a little time consuming.
@tbgsport10 ай бұрын
You lost me the moment you said shot jpeg for sports, that just makes no sense
@MarkKerton10 ай бұрын
Raw is just too big a file to send through ftp pitchside. The clients don’t need massive raws and I have no interest in using the images afterwards so jpg’s are fine. If I were shooting something to print or keep then it will always be raw, such as landscapes or woodland but for sport, jpg’s are what is asked for by the agencies👍🏻
@cdiderich10 ай бұрын
@@MarkKerton, if I am transmitting from pitch-side, I am saving both RAW and JPEG and transmit the JPEG (and still have the RAW file for potential later use).
