How to set up VPX Virtual Pinball

By request, a quick video on how to set up VPX Virtual Pinball software and get some tables going!

I finally got all three monitors to work. One question. I must be missing a setting, but can't right click on the dmd to get the resize option where you get a white border around the dmd. This is needed to permanently move the dmd to the middle monitor. Otherwise, I have to move the dmd window off the playfield onto the middle monitor every time I open up a table. Thus, do you have any insight on how to permanently move the dmd off the playfield monitor and move it to the middle monitor? Also, the f3 button doesn't work to refresh the screen once you moved the dmd to the middle monitor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day.

2 Monitor's is not too hard, Set them side by side in Windows, When installing the VPX Setup near the end it will Ask you "Do you have a Second Monitor, choice Yes, Then in VpinMame after you install it and set paths/defaults you can Edit the DmdDevice.ini for Size and Position aka X, Y, Z, setting for the DMD

Hi Rudolf, I'd suggest reinstalling it as administrator - make sure to install the B2S backglass controller even if you're running a single screen.

I got The Walking Dead to work, but it looks terrible. It's grainy and hard to see the ball on the playfield. There's a million settings to change and/or tweak, but I left them alone as I'm a complete newbie and didn't want to screw anything up. The playfield is static and it's hard to follow the ball flying around the playfield. Not sure if there's a setting for camera views. If there is, I can't find them. Perhaps there's a video on YT that steps you through each of the tabs and the settings within them. Thanks for the video btw!

Hi! Are you just having trouble with this one table? I've tried Walking Dead and Walking Dead Limited edition and both work fine, though LE has a dark coloured ball which is difficult to see sometimes. Camera view is set in the editor, either by manual entry of the values, or "on the fly" by pressing F6 in the editor and manipulating with keys as per the onscreen prompts - exit without saving if you get lost, or exit and save if you get the position you want. Hope it helps. I'm so busy with work just now I might not get a chance to make any more videos for a while, sorry about that. Good luck!

Hi, the B2S Screenres file is generated by running the small B2S_SetUp program, which is located in the tables folder. Hope that helps, cheers!

Thanks for the informative tutorial, this helps make some sense of the minefield of vpx. I have a 32” play field set up portrait, is there a setting in the editor to turn the screen to portrait? I don';t recall having any lissues with this, but I did change to PinballY which I preferred, and I also preferred the PinballX Database Manager. Take a look at those to see if they solve your problem at all. I'd also look on the PinballX forum fo rmore help - they've probably seen this before. Cheers!

Hi Antoine. Sorry for the slow response. I'm sure you've found the answer by now, but this works similarly to MAME, so pressing 5 should add a credit. You can also check and change key assignments from the menus in the editor. Cheers!

Hi. In the editor, click the backglass icon near the top of the icons on the left, then click the options icon just above. @@arnoldj.rimmer5116 Yeah, I bought it for4k sold it for 11k. I spent more time fixing it and modding it than playing it. I am looking forward to the Pinball FX3 version. It does fit the bill on playing pinball. And to have $30,000 + wrapped up in arcade machines in my basement when I had mortgage to pay and I was the only one playing them. I still have a few machines but not the big ones like Voltaire, Theatre, Indy.

Hi! Press F2 in game to see the keymappings. In-table volume should be 9 to increase and 0 to decrease. Hope it helps!

Everything works fine except that I get no music, only sound effects. I probably need to get the music files somewhere, but what format are they in and how do I recognize them?

Hi! Music files are in the Visual Pinball/Music folder. Files should be put directly into this folder, or a sub-folder if required by the table's designer. If the Music folder doesn't already exist you can create it with no issues. Music files are It is usually pointed out and explained in instructions on the table webpage and in separate folders in the table zip. Formats are any sound files (mp3, ogg, snd, wav etc.). Do you have any advice to sort through all the different versions? There is VP 8, VP 9, VP X... And then all the different tables need to run on different versions? Nothing is backwards compatible or anything or any kind of hub to just run things?

Hi Jon, yes the various versions are all included in the latest installer because there are many tables which were made for earlier versions, but were never updated. You should find that most are VPX compatible or it should say otherwise on the table's download pages. If you're having trouble with a specific table, let me know which one and I'll try to help. Take a look at PinballX front end to make selecting and running tables easier and more attractive. I have a video on this on here already. Cheers!

Hi Kaelan, run the setup program in the VPinMame folder, choose Setup Defaults, enable cabinet mode and click ok, which should disable the check - try the table again and let me know if it is ok. Cheers!

I have a question. I have downloaded two VPX tables and the roms for them and when I start them up, they start to work at first, but before the table is loaded, a message appears on screen saying “Machine terminated before initialized, check the rom path or rom file” do you know how to fix that?

Hi Grant, I think the issue could be related to the use of Exclusive Full Screen Mode setting in the Video preferences options. Try disabling it to see if that is the case. It's argued that this option should be left enabled, but can be disabled for troubleshooting, and the correct method to overcome this issue with some tables is to disable DirectDraw for those troublesome tables in the registry entry for each. Personally, I just disable this setting... Try it and see if it helps. Cheers!

Hi, the object controller refers to the controller for the backglass. Tables with a backglass require this to be installed when you installed the program (it was an option perhaps you didn't select if you are only running on a single screen). Exactly. The software supports features like vertical orientaiton, multiple screens etc., for example for a backglass display, so it's ideal if you want to recreate a pinball experience in a cabinet (basically just a pinball-shaped box - I have a video on putting one together), or just install and play it on a pc. @@messiahshow Hi mate, correct ye,s the software is proprietary, but free, and the tables are fan developed. Future pinball is another similar program, but was abandoned some years ago. Other proprietary, similar software is PinballFX3 (latest), on steam free but pay for tables, and Pinball Arcade, which was available until recently not sure now (neither of which are liked by the hardcore enthusiasts). Visual Pinball is mainly the one for the enthusiasts though...

@@arnoldj.rimmer5116 Thx, yes I have Pinball FX3 and I just bought almost all Williams Tables for Pinball FX on Epic. It was quite cheap so I went for it. I actually also have Pinball Arcade, kinda regret not getting all the tables before they pulled the plug. It was Williams not wanting their tables there anymore and giving the rights to Zen Studios instead. I will look into this Virtual Pinball more if it's that good. Sure seem cool with so many tables. Hi man, I'm just not getting the setup of the control keys. Even if you change a key for coin or start it doesn't work? And the drop down menu with 16 keys?? What I'm lost lol Any help appreciated, I read you have to change the keys in the config file as well or something but that never worked for me either.

Hi mate you shouldn'thave to change any settings from default to get it working. Reasons why it might not recognise keypresses are that the program lost focus - try movinf the mouse and clicking on the main playfield and then see if it recognizes the default keys (F5 F1 Return, ctrl etc.). Also try disabling the "Exclusive Full Screen Mode" in the graphics options in the editor - this can also cause similar problems. Hope it helps.

Hi, when the table is running, press F1 and enable "ShowDMD/Display Window", click ok, escape the editor and restart the table. You should see the dmd scoreboard... Cheers!

Hi I believe the controller is referring to the backglass controller which you have the option of install or not during main installation. The first thing I would suggest is to reinstall and include the backglass controller option, even if you are not using a second/backglass monitor (so the controller is there when looked for in the table script). Try and let me know if you still have problems.

It's all placed in the pinmame "roms" folder. I went to pinmame setup, check the directory, and it's all right but I don't know what's wrong.

I have become very familiar with the likes of MAME and other emulation software, so I thought this would be a cinch to set up, but I've hit a snag in my very first attempt. I have "procured" the table and ROM set for Genie (1979), but the VPinMAME setup keeps saying that the ROM set isn't detected, even though it definitely is the correct set, and is in the roms folder. Do I have a version mismatch? Is it possible to use the 10.6.0 version of VPX instead of 10.5.0 in conjunction with the beta? I'm just not sure what I'm doing wrong here.

@@arnoldj.rimmer5116 Hello, thanks fore getting back to me, I appreciate the upload, unfortunately, after I exchanged the incomplete ROM for this one, I received a dialogue box that said: "Machine 'genie' (Genie) terminated before initialized, check the rom path or file!" and then the program proceeded to do the same thing it did before the swap. I saw someone have the same problem, but nobody seems to have responded to him.

Hi F5 toggles double sized DMD. You can also right click the mouse pointer on the DMD, enable window border and resize like a normal window just remember to move the window around before disabling the border and drag it to where you want it. Hope it helps!

Hi mate the key assignments are defined on the Preferences Menu [Configure Keys, Nudge and DOF...]. Restart the table after the initial start. Make sure the correct ROM is correctly located as detailed in the clip. You might have to run the VPX program as Administrator (find program .exe and open properties to change this setting). Try disabling "Force exclusive Fullscreen Mode" in Preferences Menu [Video/Graphics Options...]. Hope it helps!

Also remember to insert several coins (key "5" by default), as sometimes several coins are needed to get a single credit, and if all is well you should hear the game become playable (like a loud clunk) then hit start (key "1" by default), to start a single player game (same system as used in MAME).

I've tried this table and it worked straight away. Is this the only table with this problem? Try some other tables to see if they work ok. Did you use the same Visual Pinball installer as in my video? You shouldn't need to do anything else after installing to get this table to work so you could try reinstalling Visual Pinball again. Or try running the Mame Setup file (or Setup64 depending on your system) in the VPinMame folder, leaving all settings default. Cheers!

Hi mate no I haven't, but I just looked at the wiki and it looks pretty cool so I might take a look. It claims smooth 4K video playback so it might be worth reading through that for some advice. It also mentions OBS, which is the screen recorder I use and is very good - are you using that to encode your videos?

@@arnoldj.rimmer5116 Hey so the issue was the intel 530 graphics i was using I installed a gt 1030 that was on sale for good price and just changed some of the visual prefences and now the pup packs run fine....so I would recommend a decent video card to run these tables.

Hi David there's no real reason why things might go wrong - just recheck again might have missed something minor. Make sure that ROMs are kept Zipped in the PinMame/ROMs folder. If you still can't get it running read through the comments in case anyone else had your problem, or give me more details as to what exactly is (or isn't happening), compared with mine. Cheers!

Hi I wish I had seen this vid a year ago I have really struggled to get my head around all the older versions of VP and other app's like pinmame etc. have you ever set this up on windows 10 pro 64 bit at all? I have just upgraded my cabinet from win 7 to win 10, 32 bit and pinball X is running so slow. I think it might be due to win 10 32 bit only addressing 2 GB of memory. Any advise would be really appreciated.

Hi mate I haven't set this up on Windows 10 yet but I do have a W10 machine so I might take a look. W10 32-bit can use 4GB of RAM, but 32-bit is inherently slower irrespective of how much RAM you are using - you should be using a 64-bit OS unless your hardware is so old it isn't supported. The cabinet I made specifically to a low-spec (64-bit) computer & OS and it runs "acceptably", but a faster processor and for sure a higher spec GPU would make a massive difference. Some questions. What CPU and GPU do you have? Was the speed ok under W7? Is the hardware fully compatible with W10 (i.e., did W10 advise possible hardware incompatibility issues when installing)? Can you install W10 64-bit version?

Hi, I checked my settings and 4xAA is selectable, so I'm unsure why it isn't on yours. There are other antialias settings in the drop down box, which might help, and possibly try some of the other settings too like Set For High-End PC (down at the bottom) of the video/graphics options window and see what happens.

@@arnoldj.rimmer5116 if i click twice on the tables to open them, there are fewer video options and 4xAA is grey and ALL the tables look low res/details and some things like ramps in all the tables or the gun in Dirty Harry are flat, 2D instead of 3D... If i open the tables through VPinbalX there are more video options and i can select the 4xAA and other options but it doesn't do nothing and the same table is very bright... I can play the tables and i have no problems with the sound just with the visual part... So i think it's some kind of rendering problem cos only the playfield is messed up and in Flinstones the balls fall through the table and the flippers are flat/2D...

@@arnoldj.rimmer5116 i found out what was the problem - i was using very old table versions that i got from old torrent, i now download tables from the vpinballforums site and they look better but still not perfect (like they should). Also, i was using VP 10.2, but when i uninstalled it and installed the all-in-1 VP 10.6 now the same tables have render errors and the ball is either too light or too heavy, lol. I am now downloading the 18gb torrent with 10.6 and 350 tables, but it's very slow, i'll try that, and if i have the same problems i'll install again the 10.21 version wich didn't had any problem with the ball physics... ...aaargh....it's driving me crazy! :(

@@arnoldj.rimmer5116 i downloaded the 18gb torrent and now finally the tables look like they should :))) yay!, not too bright or blurry, i can now see every detail on the playfield. I had crashes on 2 tables, lol, but it happened only once. I had to turn on AltDepthBuffer to fix render error with 1 flasher dome on the X-men table, it was above the pf anyway so it didn't had effect on the gameplay, but still... Also on some tables, like X-files or 24, if i dont turn on AA the wire ramps look a little strange, i don't know how to describe it, like dotted lines instead of solid (?) On the newer tables, like AMH or Transformers, only the UltraDmd is showing, i don't know how to enable the other (video/pup?) screens

Hi, that's an automatically generated dialogue which pops up to show the ROM error but isn't available on the VPX menu. If you want detailed info for a table run PinMAME32 in the Visual Pinball\VPinMAME folder. The interface is the same as MAME (if you use that) and the ROMs are the files listed in the Directory column - right-click on a listing and choose Properties for more info. Hope it helps!

@@mrk_builder551 If you see the "Game Info" screen when you try to run a table check:- The name of the "ROM set name" VP is looking for is listed (avr_200 in this case) Where it is looking for the ROM (Visual Pinball\VPinMame\Roms\ in my case and by default) Additional details in the main body of the dialogue - Specific error encountered "The ROM set was not found" (if I hide the ROM.zip file to test) State" "ROM set is missing: VPinMame can't run the game." Table I used is here: www.vpforums.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=14294 ROM I used is here: vpuniverse.com/forums/files/file/3441-avatar-v20/ Don't unzip the ROM file - keep it as the Zip file in the ROMs directory "Visual Pinball\VPinMame\Roms\avr_200.zip" I just went through it again with new table file and ROM with no problem. If it still won't run go through the installation again in case you missed anything.

Hi Steven 10.5 is the full installer which installs all the necessary files to run VPX. 10.6 is a beta update to certain files (not an installer), unzip these files into the 10.5 install directory and overwrite the original files. Really, 10.6 is not strictly necessary but many tables have been revised to take advantage of the update, so this step just allows those tables to run without issue. Hope it helps!

Some of the table/artwork graphics that I've seen displayed here on you tube have very low lighting, and in some cases it's hard to see the graphics. Is there a way of adjusting the lighting of each game, or were some designed to look that way?

Hi mate yes some look dark especially in daylight and there's not much you can do to brighten them individually other than increasing the brightness on the screen. In low light though they are easier to see and are likely designed that way for 'atmosphere'!

Hi you can increase a table's overall brightness in Visual Pinball by use of the day/night slider in the table editor. This appears to be the only simple option and yes it does make a huge difference. Otherwise (as suggested on forums), export the play field picture and brighten it in an editor such as photo shop seems to be the only other option. Could you give me the name of an example table which is too dark?

Hi mate yes that is dark, but it definitely seems to be by design. If you load the table into the editor and adjust the night->day cycle slider all the way to the right and enable the check mark it does make a difference. Hope it helps!

For Rocky (Gottlieb 1982) vpinball.com/VPBdownloads/rocky-gottlieb-1982/ if this is the version you're trying to run, the ROM is also called Rocky". Trying to load Bride of Pinbot Basically vpx association, 995 "Cannot Load this file", 921 just loads the editor, 995 Physix mod updated loads editor then sits there, Visual Pinball.exe loads editor and sits there. So you have your VPX files associated with something other than the 1.0.6 VPX installer (latest version including the BETA mod in the video. Help would be nice please if possible.

Hi Olias, yes the Windows message means it hasn't found a program capable of opening that file. I just downloaded this table and ROM to test. Table from here: www.vpforums.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=12435 ROM from here: www.vpforums.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=5442 Table unzipped into the Visual Pinball/Tables folder ROM still zipped into the Visual Pinball/VPinMAME/ROMs folder Double click on the table to start and it should start the editor and ask if you have permission to play this table - click yes. The table should start and initialise for some seconds. It can't be played yet though - it needs to be exited by ESCAPE and return to editor, then restart either within the editor or exiting and double-clicking the table file again. Press 5 to add credits and 1 to start 1 player game. The file suffix determines which version of Visual Pinball will start. The version for this table is VPX and it shouldn't require any changes or additonal setting up. For me it just kicked in straight away. If you're sure Visual Pinball installed ok, then is it an older version of the table? 995 and 921 are older versions of the program included in the install, but possibly have issues with this version of Windows. Also, a couple of commenters with issues were using old table versions from torrents they found, which were resolved by getting newer table versions. I suggest downloading the files I link to above and try those (you need to sign up on the website if you haven't already, but you can downloads any tables for free once you have). Hope it helps. Hi. Followed your great instructions but still have slight problem. Installed VP and did settings for running on PC. Set up VPX and beta version. Got Addams family table and rom and put in right folders. . Tried running table and it says VB script - taf_l7 terminated before initialized, check rom path or rom file. This is happening on every table. On Back to the Future table, it says error on line 216, and line 216 says - run getplayer HWnd . I know I am nearly there in getting the table to work, but this error is stopping me playing the tables. Please can you help cure this error, so I can play the table. Thanks friend.

Hi Martin, make sure that the roms are still zipped i.e., keep them as .zip files in the roms directory. The Adams family rom is actually more than 1 file however, so unzip the "adams family" zip file, and place the several smaller TAF_l* zip files into the roms directory without unzipping them further. To help, I have uploaded this file (adams family & indiana jones) to google drive:- drive.google.com/open?id=1jH64jvv-NDYHQz7UL70pujec5r__lE7r Download and unzip it into a temporary folder and then copy the entire folder structure into the directory within which "Future Pinball" was installed (look at the file structure and you will understand). Or, copy the files individually as they are, without unzipping, if you find that easier. Do that first and let me know how you get on with those tables.

Another possible solution to this issue Martin is that you are running in "Exclusive Fullscreen" mode, which causes similar issues on some tables. If the above makes no difference, enter the Pinballx editor without running a table (start pinballx and cancel the dialogue to load a table), then on the Preferences menu, choose video/graphics options and uncheck "Force exclusive Fullscreen mode" on the right, which will run the program in a window rather than full screen. Try again and see if that resolves it.

Hi my friend To me, you are the virtual pinball guru The problem was down to the graphics mod you gave. I unchecked the forced full screen and every table is working just as I remember. Regaining your youth is so empowering lol. So, I just need to go through the preferences, and change the brightness, as the tables are a little dark and then I can begin transferring it all to a mini cabinet, for the ultimate experience. Hi! I'm really not sure why it has that. I think it's just something silly some table makers like to include... If you open the table script in the editor, look for this line (if you saw the "You Suck" comment): .SplashInfoLine = ""&chr(13)&"You Suck" You can edit the text in parenthesis to something nicer or even more vampiric! :) Remember to save the table when you exit the editor. Hope it helps!

Hi! Some tables initialize their settings the first time they are opened, but will only accept coins but not start as you say. If that happens, please exit the program and restart the table - it should then work. So try it again now and see what happens. Hope it helps!

Hi Mika, if you've followed the instructions, using the same files I did in the same way, it should work. Try another table first in case it's the table file corrupted (if you haven't already), then try disabling "Force exclusive Fullscreen Mode" in Visual Pinball Video/Graphics Options on the VPX program's Preferences menu. If still no joy -- uninstall and reinstall again make sure you have the same files I used. Let me know. Cheers! (Edit - also check the keys to use on the preferences menu - the defaults may not be what you expect.)

Please check that the ROM you have installed in the PinMame/Roms folder is the correct one - the names can appear similar but they will not work unless they are the exact one required.
