Just an addition to closing the valve as you leave your gear or for transport, Let the pressure off of the reg set so you SEE the air is turned off.

I recommend you always purge the 2nd stage before simply sucking on it. A friend blew a front tooth out by not firstly purging the reg.

Very helpful. I do have one confusion though. What is the purpose of turning the task valve back off during transport/waiting for the dive?

Inhales on the surface do not assure that the valve is fully opened.

As an instructor, in situations where I give air to one of my dive group by my octopus, i experienced it to be a lot easier to have the octopus hose on the LEFT side, the hose will less get twisted. So there is NO fixe rule what side the octopus should be. You set up the gear by experience. Your dive buddy will notice anyway as you guys do a pre-dive buddy check, right? 😊
