Very cool method. I'm always looking to improve my knowledge and experience. I tested this theory last night on two SADB4 18s on two ampere 9.0s gain matched at 1ohm . 4 Arnold's on an ampere 150.4 bridged at 4 ohm's and on the apocalypse super tweeters off the amplifier as well. Definitely pleased and made this process as easy as it could ever get. Thank you brotha.

He forgot to mention, have your gain levels set to zero before you adjust your LPF or HPF. Play a 0db tone as well, like 50hz 0db. LPF have it turned all the way up, play hz tone you desire for tuning and back down the LPF until you see the voltage reach it's highest point. Then set your gain level to desired wattage... Amp is tuned 👌 Correct me if im mistaken.

I was told to multiply that original voltage by .707. Then turn it until the voltage drops to that calculated voltage. So you multiply your original voltage which was 36. Multiply that times .707 and you get 25.45. Adjust until you get to that 25.45 level. Would this be correct or more accurate? The RMS of a pure sine wave is .707 @ peak power that's why it says to multiply by that number. Makes sense to me. Just want your thoughts

Google "car audio test tones" and you can download them all over the place. You can also make them yourself with a tone generator in audio software like Audacity, like if you wanted something nonstandard like an 82.7Hz crossover point.

Great vid Derrick. I do th3 same thing. However when setting a crossover, between midbass and subs for example, where you want a flat frequency response th3 amount of that drop will change depending on the slope of the crossovers/filters. This is a more advanced/sq nitpicky thing tho. Btw...what are the slopes on the filters in the SFB amps?

would be nice if more manufactures amps had accurate dials, some are terrible, some are pretty close. In my exp Alpine amps are fairly on point by a notch or two from sa 80hz setting. JL amps are dead on from testing mine. I would assume audio control is also, no exp with their amps. Had a SKAR 2 channel that was wayyyyyyyyy off, i sold that a few years ago
@nicklumbard3431
@nicklumbard3431 4 жыл бұрын
love the channel, although seem like i remember (it's been a long time) that when a crossover is set a specific hz, that is know typically as the "3db down" point, wich electrically means .707 of the voltage produced with no filter. so to set crossover at certain hz, measure output voltage of amp with no filter, multiply by .707, set amp output to value you get? am i remembering this wrong?
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 4 жыл бұрын
For a six decibel per octave crossover you are correct.
@JoshM7
@JoshM7 3 жыл бұрын
My findings are .707 works for any slope of a Butterworth filter. (That's -3dB at the target frequency) Bessel is only .707 when using a 1st order. For 2-4 it works as follows. 1st order Bessel = .707 2nd order Bessel = .58 (About 4.8dB down at the target frequency) 3rd order Bessel = .487ish (About 6.2dB down at the target frequency) 4th order Bessel =.42 (About 7.5dB down at the target frequency) For Linkwitz-riley it's about .499 regardless of the slope. It's always -6dB at the target frequency. I'm not sure if all car amps use Bessel but my Hifonics ZEUS ZRX1216.1D seems to use a Bessel Highpass. Assuming the Lowpass is also a Bessel filter.

I've seen this advice on a couple different channels, and I feel like it's close, but not quite right. I thought the crossover frequency was where the output was 3dB down from reference. So, measuring the unfiltered output, then turning the knob just until the voltage changes isn't accurately setting the crossover to the tuned frequency. This shouldn't affect the health of larger drivers like subs and mids, but could be destructive for smaller drivers like tweeters. To get -3dB, you'd multiply the reference voltage by 0.707, then dial the knob to that level. So, when measuring 36VAC, you'd want to dial the knob until the DMM reads 25.4VAC.

Old school heads know this stuff! This is highly critical in an SQ system when trying to get a good sub-satellite transition. -3 corner freq on the lp and matching -3 corner freq on hp creates a theoretical perfect 0db ripple at crossover pt. This concept is universal in crossover design. Not so critical for subsonic filtering. Not so critical for SPL systems either. Peace.

Mark, so I would play a 50hz 0db tone at head unit clip point and have the LPF set max and multiple that voltage number by .707 and that new voltage number is my key point to set at 50hz? Example, play 50hz 0db, set LPF at max = 70.23v now multiple 70.23 x .707 = 49.65 for 50hz LPF.

Does every Hz tone have a different voltage you had to bring it down to. For example if 40 Hz you bring it down to 36 V then does 50 Hz have a different voltage you have to bring it down to or is it the same?

Wrong method Sir. For a butterworth 12db/oct crossover with an unfiltered 37v your target voltage is 3db down at 80hz (assuming thats the frequency you choose) which is actually 26v. So play a 80hz tone with the crossover wide open if you see 37v on your dmm keep turning the knob until you see 26v , that is 80hz on a 12db/oct crossover. If its a 24db/oct crossover then you want about 18.5 volts.

Jeff Klein that’s a false statement. And his equipment isn’t crap. I’ve used both a DMM, and the DD1-HV and crossover calibrator for years. When used correctly, they all are accurate. I’m really getting tired of the people out here in the audio world trashing guys making devices to make your job easier, and quicker. Also, makes for an easy check for someone who is a gain and crossover toucher. The DMM is a math thing that most new audio guys don’t know how to do for wattage to your subs, or bass, or mid bass, or midrange, etc. the problem with only using just the DMM, is it doesn’t give you distortion reading. That’s what an O-scope does. For crossovers, this is possible, but not as accurate, and hard to match crossovers for multiple amps, which could throw off tuning, causing subs to work against each other in a common chamber enclosure. That’s the benefit of the crossover calibrater over the multimeter. You can match all amps to the T with efficiency and accuracy with less chance of error.
