I've watched a lot of videos showing how "easy" it is it share files between Windows and Linux but every one of them either left out a critical component or simply did not work. Turning on Network Discovery on Windows computers connected to public networks is *not* a wise thing to do, make sure you're connected to (or set your network as) a private network. Very enlightening video!

To setup static adress on local network i recomend to do it on a router, get a mac adress typing ifconfig in server console and search for the MAC adress after it just bi d an ip to mac adr on your router

I dont have internet access so I can't ping and I can't update the server. I did the static ip configuration on the machine like he did . Maybe configuring the static ip address on the router, with the mac address, like you said , is the solution to my problem .

Frank (or should I call you Oscar?), Wonderful video tutorial. And I happen to be someone that used to make them for a living. I was just telling someone that all the info I find is exactly as you say. Either outdated or wrong. Or in terms of YT videos, in broken English. One thing you did not cover, and it is the thing I and many others have had problems with. While we have this issue with the desktop rather than server, it should be the same. The issue is with EXTERNAL USB drives attached to the Ubuntu server/share. These shared folders or drives are being seen on Windows, but you can't open them. I gather all your examples are folders placed onto the main drive, not external. The "solutions" I find are many and varied and mostly very complex. And mostly, from what I have read, don't resolve the issue. Plus, ultimately, I would like to be streaming to various Firestick like clients. Thanks!

Thanks for this tutorial. It was one of the first linux tutorials I ever followed. Although I came back to this tutorial after diving more into running a linux server and noticed that while the information works, just like you mentioned that some of the information out there was oudated, well some of your information is now outdated or incorrect as well, or simply performed in a long winded fashion. Otherwise its a great quick tutorial. But I personally think it could use some more in depth information on some of the commands being used. Or maybe its just me that prefers to properly understand the commands I'm using rather than just typing in information blindly. I've noticed you havent released any new videos in years it seems. I hope you are doing ok and plan to release more informative videos in the future.

These files are being shared on the LAN the keyword was "Home" I missed that a little lol. I wanted to access the files remotely. I would need a graphical interface on the server end or just setup VNC. I think a good alternative is a proxmox virtual machine server you can run multiple virtual machines on the server or cluster them. They have a web GUI. This way you can see your files and folders, and access them on the fly if needed. The only way into this remotely is to configure ssh and for viewers not proficient in linux that is really hard, I would probably mess something up lol. Or you could use "webmin" it lets you do a raid zero (connecting multiple drives together as one mass storage device) and again gives you a easy to use web GUI. This tutorial was perfect from start to end though, you explained everything in detail at an easy to follow pace and with a pleasant temperament. Plus no annoying theme song , with no audio on the tutorial just a visual usually going way too fast. Always a big + for me. So this video did get me thinking I have an old Dell Optiplex 780sff with a core 2 duo that I will install the proxmox and but I will use Franks method with a Dell Dimension 3000 it has a Pentium 4 lol. If the tower in the beginning of this video can get this done then I am confident the Dimension will too. I was going to throw Lubuntu on there because its so light weight but so is this Samba Server version of Ubuntu,,,, With all this talk about Microsoft buying Ubuntu, I know the container is available on the Microsoft store which is scary.. Should I be concerned about an "invasion of privacy" from Microsoft's new spy lens. I know this video is from a while back so some things have changed with Ubuntu. I saw that you didn't use encryption, with all thats going on with privacy it might not be a bad idea. From the command line users can generate a private and public passkeys pretty easily & there are tons of tutorials on it. I mean unless there are just some kitty videos Microsoft can have fun watching those if they want ; )
