My desk would not have enough space for a 8” sub but I bought a Fostex 5” 50 watt sub (PM-SUB-MINI-2). To help compliment my vans too T0’s. I used the sub out of the Vanatoos at 80hz and that was good but then I used a Mini Dsp 2x4 with both of them and put a curved high pass filter on the sub because it’s only a 5” driver at about 20hz. Something lacking in most of these subwoofer reviews, and in particular, from the T5 is this: 1. Alright, using the R1850's as an example - so they have a subwoofer output (a 3.5 MM output - sigh...). Now, when I connect the T5 to the R1850's via a 3.5 MM to dual male RCA cables, do the R1850's automatically know I have a subwoofer connected, and if so, at what point (if they do it at all) do they automatically choose a low frequency cutoff and at what frequency is chosen? 2. I ask this, because on the T5 I would not know what frequency to turn the dial to. Would I choose a frequency on the T5 of let's say 80 Hz, or do I (as some would suggest), just turn the frequency turnover know all the way to right to 150/160 HZ which somehow automatically syncs the subwoofer with the R1850's. And it would seem that this would be too high a turnover frequency? Am I making sense here. I guess what I'm trying to do is to tune and sync the T5 with the R1850's - is it done automatically, or do I have to set the frequency turnover dial on the rear of the T5 to a specific frequency? And will this just double the effort, meaning, if the R1850's are trying to push 45 Hz, will the subwoofer be doing the same thing, thus doubling the frequency and over-accentuating a particular frequency/instrument? I hope that I'm making some sense here as this is one area that has been driving me bonkers with regards to getting a definitive answer. Thanks... Ben

Hi! Same question here. Same set up. I have the R1850DB speakers and the T5.
@_BrettHamblin_4 жыл бұрын
I am literally no expert by any means, but my understanding is: (and please someone correct me on this if I am way out of the ball park) I'll use your R1850's as an example. I actually just returned my S880DB as there was just not enough low end for my liking (nor do they have a sub out) and I've just ordered the S350DB. The R1850's have a frequency response of 60Hz - 20KHz, these are the frequencies the speakers are going to primarily focus on. The T5 has a Freq response of 40Hz to 160Hz. Now my understanding is that you would configure the LPF on the Sub to max at just under 60Hz so it can produce everything below what the Speakers are not capable of so as not to bring in two frequencies simultaneously and distort the clean sound you're trying to achieve. The speakers will concentrate on what the sub can't do and the sub will concentrate on what the speakers can't do.
@ducttaperulestheworl4 жыл бұрын
for your question 1 iirc the R1850 subwoofer is a direct out loop from your volume control. I could be wrong but that shouldn't affect your tuning since the lower speaker frequency will be blended by your initial sub tuning anyway. If you are worried about phase issues then you probably need a better sub with phase control. Question 2 When you setup your sub you are tuning into the "phantom" crossover point based on your ears. Subs are helping your speakers to achieve a wider range. If you are getting weird midbass peaks then you probably set your crossover too high. Alternatively you can always cut the bass off your R1850DB and let your sub do the work. I would like to say to trust your ears and ignore the numbers. Generally you twist the sub vol/lpf to blend into the fullrange, assuming your fullrange is doing fullrange. Just like what's told in the video. To set the bass level you like and then match the speaker volume or the other way round. So maybe set your speaker to the way you like then introduce the sub to blend into the background. There are times where speaker specs crossover is at say 60Hz but we always forget they don't do a sharp cut there. It's all in a slope and you blend the subwoofer slope to your fullrange. The speaker frequency range can be used as a guide but if you factor in your room acoustics then the frequency is totally off since you don't live in anechoic chamber. If you really want to be technical with numbers then using a phone app like spectoid or go all out with RTA mic with SMAART software to find your crossover point. But nothing beats a custom tuned speaker to match your ears since we are not building a clinical studio room here

@@xayroMS I've got the 1700bts and T5 as desk speakers running though a modi 3E (I know it's a meme tier setup but I'm broke af) and they work great. Gets super loud for desktop and the T5 fills out the low freq nicely. I do keep it right to the right of my desk and can feel it in my seat when it's cranked pretty high. The biggest drawback of this sub by a country mile is the fact that there is no frequency cutoff so the 1700bts speakers are still handling low(as low as they can at least) freqs as well as the sub rather than just letting the sub handle em. That said the speakers feel kinda thin in the bass department with out a sub so it's not a massive drawback. Definitely get a sub if you get the 1700bts. I have noticed that the sub seems slightly quieter? when run through my DAC rather than just straight off the speakers via my computer and I'm not entirely sure why. Perhaps it's just cause the source is just cleaned up. Otherwise, no chuff and my lpf is set around 50hz since that's about where the speakers cutoff is. Hope this helps. EDIT: Disregard what I said about quietness, I'm an absolute brainlet who had a desktop EQ running while comparing. It's absolutely fine.

$130 for a sub that goes down to 38hz and puts out 70 watts RMS seems decent, i'm pretty sure my bigger heavier Edifier S730 sub doesn"t go any deeper

Why do you value everything in sound exept base preformance? Tone, timber, texture, detail, dymanics, speed, and volume all play an essential role into how well a base diver preformes, yet you seem to think (please tell me I'm wrong) the only job of a sub is to go wub wub. Its the exact same logic as saying the only thing a headphone is designed to do is to get loud. Ive heard quite a few, and to put it breif. Up to about $1000, smaller subs of the same cost are going to sound better, and in some cases, even extend lower than larger ones that only perpose was desinged for people that think base is supposed to be loud; blouted, unfrefined, one note, flabby, and all. You always get what you pay for, cheap subs are not designed by engineers, and trial and acoustic lab tested. Their designed to get loud and distort. Get a rel, adam, nubert, b&w, dynaudio (even svs and hsu) or any other manufacture doesn't just put in the cheapest chinese amp they can. This is a pretty salty rant I admit, but I dont get how you can appreciate the qulities of a $4000 speaker yet think base is just base. The driver being the same size has nothing to do with its preformance in any area including extention.

@@En_Joshi-Godrez You are right but also wrong. The limit of a quality sub is about $500, and goes up with regards to output capabilities. Just do not play into the cult of REL and the like. Out of all the companies you listed, only SVS and HSU have valid offerings. Everyone else you mentioned makes overpriced crap. Too many of these "Audiophile" companies make subs that are complete jokes. I say this because you have these companies charging $2000+ for extremely small subs with very small amplifiers. REL wants to charge $1000+ for a 10" sub, when a 12" Rythmik exists for $500. Output is a valid and important aspect of performance. Having output does not mean you have to curtail the quality of the bass you get. On the contrary, a larger sub with more output will result in A LOT less distortion than a smaller "more musical sub" playing at the same volume. Take my favorite bang for buck sub, a DIY Dayton Ultimax 18" sealed subwoofer. This sub can play at 120dB! But it also has lower amounts of distortion than a 12" JL Audio sub. I can guarantee it has less distortion than any REL sub. Not only does it play loud (louder than most ported/passive radiator subs) it plays extremely clean. And it is CHEAP as hell. It would take $10K in REL subs to match the output of one of these subs costing $700. These small sub companies are running scams on the public. The more excursion you get from a woofer, the more distortion you will get. It doesn't matter how much engineering goes into it. If you can see a woofer visibly vibrate back and forth you can bet your ass it is distorting. Smaller subs are also not as efficient as bigger subs. An 18" sub will get a lot louder than a 12" sub if fed the same amount of power. So big subs put less strain on their drivers and their amplifiers.
