Hi Gav, Great advice as usual. The advantage you have is your room is maintained at / near the cool end range so the stats don't have to work too hard to maintain the ideal hot spot. In an situation where the rack is in a spare room then I would follow your advice and use a stat on each shelf. If that's too expensive then at most I would do three shelves per stat with the probe on the middle one of each group of three. I purposely designed a controller which is in effect 8 pulse proportional stats in one unit so I could control each shelf in my DIY rack. I lack the funds to take it from a DIY project to a commercial product (testing alone to CE mark it was almost £30K), but I'm sure there is a market for such a product, and wondered why none of the leading thermostat manufactures haven't produced such a product. I believe Habistat dis bring out a 4 channel stat unit, but retailed it at around £500 back in 2008/9... so yeah, you can see why that was dead in the water. I've just had two Habistat PP stats fail resulting in the mats reaching 45c. Fortunately a change in the snakes behaviour meant we caught it quick enough to prevent any damage to the snake or vivs. My unit has programable alarm points which cut the power to the heater and sounds an alarm should the temps go above or below the range set. It also does this if the controller doesn't receive a reading form a probe, so covers faulty probes too. I'm sure the current digital stats form the two manufactures do something similar, but given their price tags it would be expensive to rig up three or four to a large rack. Oh and a chap on RFUK was after some 70ltr tubs so pointed him in your direction...You can pay me the commission later 🙂

I dunno if u said this in an earlier video but are the heat mats connected to a 10 socket extension cable and then attached to 1 thermostat? My setup is so messy with cables and really needs a tidy up lol
