SUCH CRITICAL ADVICE. I wish I knew these basic concepts before I started. Foiling is so set up sensitive. When things are right, it is easy. When thing are wrong, it is so frustrating. I have so little patience for sailing things in. I want it to be like my freestyle board. Drop the fin in and go. Foiling feels like setting up a full camber race sail and punishes you if you don't set it up right.

Question: Must the length of the mast and width of the board be proportional? That is to say, would it be ok to get a foil with a mast of 85cm and pair that with a foil board that is 90cm-91cm wide? Many thanks.

This might seem like a silly question but could I put a regular (non-foil) fin on a foil board (like the one shown here) and sail it? I'm curious as to how it would handle a regular/small fin. I ask because I often sail at shallow (and weedy) locations where a deep foil would not work.
