How to Sew a Bowl Cozy with Crafty Gemini

Welcome to Day 11 of 12 Days of Last Minute DIY Gifts! I have received hundreds of requests for a soup bowl cozy tutorial. So, here it is!
This bowl cozy features 9" x 9" square pieces of fabric and round edges for a look I prefer. These bowl cozies can be used pretty much every time you are eating something in a bowl whether it be hot or cold. The fabric and batting layers will keep the heat or cold away from your hands so you can comfortably hold your bowl and continue eating.
Note: If you plan to put your bowl cozy in the microwave to reheat soup or something similar please make sure your fabrics, batting and thread are all 100% cotton as synthetic fibers can melt at high temps.
Feel free to change up the dimensions and make some different sized bowl cozies!

I love this tutorial. Very easy to follow and understand. For bigger or smaller bowls, my rule of thumb is to measure across the top of the bowl and add three inches. So if the bowl measures 7 inches across, I would cut 10" squares. For an 8.5" bowl, I would cut an 11.5" square and so on... The darts stay the same measurements for all.

I made a few of these some time ago. I am now sewing 10 sets of 2 sizes, a 10 inch square and a 11 inch square. A one inch step up in size fits a larger bowl. Love this tutorial, really did an excellent job. Just a hint as to how I make the rounded corners: I mark the corners with a saucer on all four corners of just one of the bowl pieces. I pin the right sides of the bowl together. Then using my corner markings as my guide I sew my bowl together with a scant 1/2 inch seam. This eliminates the need to match up the rounded corners, the sewing machine does that for you!!!! I can't wait to view your other 11 videos of Last Minute Gifts. For making the rounded corners, I've found it's much simpler to use the template of your choice to trace the curved corners onto your batting BEFORE sewing the darts, as it's still flat at that point. Very helpful video!

Sue Ob Try turning your flywheel by hand to get through the thick seam allowances. Also, as already noted, use a larger needle. I would also press the seam allowances open if your machine is having a very difficult time handling the bulk.

Even though this little bowl cozy has been around for quite a long time, I continue to whip them up for a variety of gifts: stocking stuffers, new-to-college young people (assuming they eat a lot of Ramen cooked in microwaves) door prizes at our ladies' church meetings.....the list goes on and on. I especially like the petal type sides instead of squared off corners. My 92 year young Dad lives in Assisted Living and these bowl cozies helps him to not get burned when heating soup, etc. (Sorry, this has turned into quite a narrative.....) I conceded myself a pretty good seamstress until I tried to follow along with one of these bowel cover videos. THE NUMBER ONE STEP that isn't included is the amount of timing that really needs to be explained. It would have made this project so much easier. Iam not criticizing anyone. I've made several of these and never thought to round the corners! A tip: If the batting or wrap n zap is cut smaller than the fabric, the edges aren't as bulky when top stitching.

I LOVE this tutorial. 😁Just finished making 22 cozies for Christmas gifts. I used 10-inch squares to accomodate larger bowls. Instead of using the spray baster I quilted my fabric to the batting with 2-inch rows and a dedcorative wave stitch - this took some time but I like the look and wanted the batting to stay secured to the fabric after washing. I love your videos. You make sewing so much easier. I have made bowl cozies, but my problem is your cozies look so much neater and easier to sew. I have been using the warm and something cotton batting. It seems so thick and I have a hard time sewing it even with the walking foot. I am fairly new to sewing. Instead of using any batting, I just use one piece of cotton fabric and one of a cute colour polar fleece. Makes it much simpler and easier to sew, and still works just as well

An idea for the opening so it closes better. Start sewing at the edge of the fabric at a 90 degree angle from where your 1/4” seam will be. Sew in 1/4”, (probably 2-3 stitches),leave the needle down and rotate your fabric to the edge you will sew, and Stitch your seam1/4” from the edge as usual. When you come to the spot you want to finish, lift the presser foot with your needle down and rotate towards the edge of the fabric and sew off the fabric. This will help your unsewn sections to turn in so you won’t see where you left it open. Topstitch as usual.

I have discovered that you can not use spray adhesive if you are going to use these in the microwave and if you do not round the edges you can se the flaps to pull out of the microwave. I prefer to leave the corners square so I have something to hold on to when removing a hot bowl from the microwave. I like that you use 9 inch squares since I use a microwave batting that comes in a 36-inch width. Nine inch bowls will give me 4 bowls, cutting across. Most tutorials use 10-inch squares, leaving me with only 3 bowls across with lots of wasted batting. GREAT JOB!

Thanks for showing the rounded parts, I made us some a couple of years ago and we use them a lot, but I don't put them in the microwave, we heat up our soup or whatever and then I use those little hot pads for hands and open the microwave and put the bowl in the cozy after I put it on the tray next to the hot bowl and then take it out. I just don't want a fire or scorching. It probably wouldn't, but I have heard so many stories and I don't trust the batting to not have scrim and the other kind costs so much. Great tutorial! Unfortunately, it was to small for my soup bowls. Mine are square and the bottom measured 4". This 9x9 finished had a bottom that measured 3" so my question is, should I add 1 inch to my starting square? Dumb question I know but I'm really bad at math!

Great tutorial. I really like the rounded corners and will have to give them a try. I've made several using a different tutorial, but basically the same. To make them, I used Wrap & Zap (it even states on the packaging that it can be used for microwaveable projects), 100% cotton thread and 100% cotton fabric (I prewash, NO FABRIC SOFTENER). I have not had an issue with using them in the microwave at all. I wash them frequently and I even toss them in the dryer.

DONT use spray baste, or batting with scrim if you are microwaving these. You must use a scrim free batting, like Pelon wrap and zap, and spray baste will also catch fire in the microwave.

I'm sure you noticed, Livinnpjs, that the spray basting she used is environmentally friendly, odorless and does not contain flammable propellant. The more "nonnatural" things we can keep out of the microwave the better. If using a regular basting spray just wash it before use.

I am so sad!! I made 8 bowl cozies to give to my children today for Christmas. I used 100% cotton thread and fabric. I used Wrap and Zap. I used the same non-flammable spray Vanessa used. This morning, before wrapping them up to give as gifts, I put one in the microwave, just to be sure it was safe. It burned!! Throw them all away?? And now my children don't have Christmas gifts! I could just cry.

Sorry to hear that! We don’t use the microwave so I just use them to hold hot or cold bowls. How long did you put it in for? Was there an actual bowl with soup in it or did you just place the bowl cozy in there by itself. I’m sure there are several factors that contributed to it. I wouldn’t throw them away. Just include a note that says don’t heat in microwave, etc.

Please don't microwave regular cotton batting. It still has synthetic scrim in it. Use a microwave safe batting like Wrap and Zap.

Not all cotton battings have a synthetic scrim. I use Quilter's Dream Cotton Batting and it has no scrim or synthetic fibers in it.

Love the rounded corners. I make a secon "x" making a star. This keeps the two layers together when washing.
