In this video tutorial I am going to show you how to sew a bowl cozy using 10-1/2" squares of 100% cotton fabric. These bowl cozies are truly a family favorite. They are great for hot foods, cold foods, and are microwave safe. Just be sure to use 100% cotton fabric, batting, and thread if you intend to use the bowl cozies in the microwave.
To use the bowl cozies in the microwave, simply place your bowl of food to be reheated into the bowl cozy and place both in the microwave. Reheat for no more than 2 minutes at a time.

New to your channel and I want to thank you for the tutorial. I have wanted to make some but wasn’t sure about the measurements for the darts and your video made it easy to make. Thank you! 🥰

Thank u for the excellent explanation. I've made some cosies but haven't been happy with them due to bulk. I will try your way as u do it slightly differently 😊.

Very helpful video and you have shown me some things I had not been doing but will start now. I use Wrap and Zap batting and sometimes it seems to be too bulky. Any suggestions for another type of batting. I'm not an expert seamstress - pretty much self taught and by watching videos.. Your suggestion for beginning turning this from the opposite corner works really well. Thank you for demonstrating this cozy!

You are so welcome! You can make this cozy with only one layer of batting. That should help with the bulkiness. There are a couple other microwave safe batting brands online. In fact, you can even by some that are pre-cut specifically for use with bowl cozies.

Would cutting the backing smaller than the fabric make it easier to sew? Don’t have a walking foot would make it easier too but I don’t have one lol
@hooked-on-sewing

By “backing” are you talking about the cotton batting? If so, you can cut the batting slightly smaller than the fabric. This helps to reduce bulk in the seams. If you do cut your batting smaller, be sure to do the two rows of topstitching after turn the fabric right side out. This topstitching will not only close the opening but help to keep the batting in place.

Hi, what kind of sewing machine do you use? I am very new to sewing machines and looking into purchasing one. So far, i know i just need one that can handle layers of fabric. I am looking at a Brother, which only does a straight stitch, which is really all i think i care about. What do you think?
@hooked-on-sewing
@hooked-on-sewing 4 ай бұрын
I'm so sorry that I am just now seeing your comment. So I apologize for the delay in replying. I use a Janome 8200 QCP Memory Craft. I previously used a Brother HC1850. The type of machine you purchase is dependent upon the type of sewing you plan to do. You could visit a quilt shop and talk to someone about your sewing plans and they can give you some great recommendations. Even if you don't buy a machine from them, they are a great resource. So, a machine that only does a straight stitch, does one thing really well - sew a straight stitch. You won't be able to sew a zig zag stitch which is great for finishing seams, sewing knit or stretch fabrics or making buttonholes. I hope this helps!

How do you make the one cozy with no large corners?

I take a round object (lid, bowl, or plate) and mark the curve or arch of the corners. I then cut along the curved lines. Hope this helps!!

How do you measure the fabric for cozy to fit the bowl?
@hooked-on-sewing
@hooked-on-sewing 2 ай бұрын
That’s a good question. The bowls I use are 5” wide at the base and about 6-1/4” at the top. They are also about 2-1/4” high (measured from the flat surface of the table to the rim of the bowl). Basically the bottom of the cozy should measure at least as wide as the base of the bowl. To determine this, measure from the bottom of the dart across to the bottom of the opposite dart. And then you want the sides of the cozy to be high enough so that it comes up the side of your bowl. My finished darts are about 2” high. So 6-1/2 + 2 + 2 = 10-1/2”. That is the total width of my cozy at the darts. From corner to corner the cozy measures 12”. My bowl’s total measurements are 5 + 2-1/2 + 2-1/2 = 10”. Does this make sense? Say your bowl has a 7” base. You would want your cozy to be at least 7” between darts and the sides to be high enough to cover the side of the bowl. If my sides are 3” high, then I will need to make a cozy that is at 14” wide. I came to this conclusion based on 7” for base, 6” for the sides (3+3), 1” for seam allowances. I hope this helps!

Could you use cotton flannel instead of batting?
@nancy9478
@nancy9478 4 ай бұрын
Yes, I just saw a comment on another video and the poster said its not as thick, just use an additional layer. 100 percent cotton is always a must. And they dry faster.

I would assume you could so long as it is 100% cotton.

Yes, I do! If the item I am sewing is going to be used and washed a lot, then I like to wash and dry it first to minimize shrinkage.

You-set your stitch to 3 mm? Why so tiny?
@hooked-on-sewing
@hooked-on-sewing 4 ай бұрын
Actually, I use anywhere between 3-4 for my topstitching. Which is a long stitch. This stitch length lays better on top of the fabric.
