Tutorial on how to sew a chair pad using an antique Singer 27 and homemade stuffing. Ideal for wooden chairs, or even scatter cushions, this project uses #repurposed fabric from a thrift store and #homemade stuffing from fabric scraps.
Let me know in the comments if you have a go at making seat pads of your own and how you got on. Or even any projects you make using sustainable materials like homemade stuffing or recycled fabric. You can share pictures of your projects with me on Instagram using the hashtag #SimplySustainableStitchy. I'd love to see them!

I agree! Charity shops are amazing! I always leave with some new treasure. Great find with the upholstery fabric. I like how you use chalk to mark the seam allowance on the cushion since Grandma doesn't have markings. Sometimes I use masking tape on my sewing machine to mark seam allowances greater than the manufactured markings but I couldn't imagine using tape on yours. She's too lovely.

Thanks! :D I haven't used masking tape, although I did try an elastic band around the base on Jerome, my Janome. Getting a band big enough can be a challenge though. Thanks so much for watching!

Ive heard that long bobbin treadle sewing machines "vibrate" and are somewhat louder but, my gosh its so shocking how much louder than my handcrank singer99! Hahaha, it was a great video and now i have another project on my list :) thanks!

hello love the video do you think you could have sewed it closed using the sewing machine?

Using the sewing machine to close the gap is possible, but - you'd be able to see the stitches. It would be a lot like the top stitching on the wings - on full view and would cause a bit of a ridge. Hand sewing it closed keeps the gap hidden so it just looks like part of the seam. I'll do a video on sewing gaps shut with a sewing machine so you can see the difference. Thanks for watching :D
