What was the purpose behind the initial stitching on the inside of the belt?

I can't understand exactly what you are talking about. If it is a seam around the waistband, then this is necessary to secure the form of belt. Otherwise, the belt will wrinkle.

@@sewway Referring to the stitch you did while the belt was turned inside-out. Im brand new to sewing so don’t quite understand the need to work inside-out

Well, now I understand. This is the simplest sewing operation, first the contour of the product is sewn inside, then it is turned inside out, ironed and a finishing line is made.
