This is the easiest version of a Mug Rug I have seen; I wish I had known about this way last winter when I tried making them. They were so hard the other way. I really am learning a lot from you and appreciate how detailed your instructions are.

I do only straight line quilting so I use painter's tape all the time. It's great. I love making mug rugs; so much fun.

What size squares would you start with for a square mug rug? I’m just now taking sewing lessons.

Square Mug Rugs are basically coasters. I like to use 5" squares because you can use precut fabric that size or use up scraps. You can of course do larger - that's the beauty of sewing! Here's a video showing how easy they are to do - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZeXfGuOnqqlfqM Have fun!
