This is a slightly different zipper installation technique that I thought I'd try using one piece for the outer fabric, and one for the lining. Here we'll install two recessed zippers, and an internal pocket.
I'd love to know what you think. Is this something you'd try?

2 weeks ago today, at this exact time (Wisconsin) I was taken into open heart mitral valve repair and what better way to celebrate 2 weeks post op than to watch you create a bag with contrasting zips that is so lovely. Guess I’d hide the top zips. Thank you. Feel better Christine

For a hidden zipper - maybe cut the rectangle on both pieces press seam allowance under. With wrong sides facing each other insert zipper between layers and top stitch around rectangle.

I like this bag very much. Yes, I think the straps need to be in a bit further to the centre. I like the two different pockets as well. I like the ease with which the top zip goes in -- it would be very fiddly to put it in between the lining and outside of the bag and I couldn't be bothered doing that. I like the pen pocket -- all bags should have one of those! The only other thing I might add is a key ring on the inside of the bag, perhaps beside the inside pocket -- I always lose my keys in the bottom of the bag or pocket :( Thank you for the excellent tutorial.

Using that zipper technique on the top, was what I thought would work, when you started talking about the "different" way to add the top zipper. WOW, was I happy about that. It was the ONLY alternate way I could think of, and had you not done it, I was going to try it. I was thinking about how to do it before you reveled the option was being used. 🥰 YEA...I actually figured it out.

Hi Christine! This is really cute! I think you could sew a narrow binding around the top zipper to get a finished look. Otherwise, you can set the zipper in the lining first with the correct orientation, and stitch it with the raw edges under. That would mean the back of the zipper goes to the face of the lining. Then place the entire zipper and lining under the outer fabric. You may need very lightweight facings to accomplish this technique. You are basially making the boxes twice with facings, and the back of the zipper has 2 rows of stitching. Or youcould hand baste it to eliminate some steps. Let me know what you think!❤
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs 3 ай бұрын

I really like this bag, and the idea. I was looking for a new bag idea and I think I have found it. I don't often have yardage, so I'm particular with it's use. Just when I was going to ask how close to the edge are you with the zip, you corrected your original instructions. I was concerned it could get bunchy. And the handles moved in just a bit may be a good idea, though it looks fine. I just wondered if it would droop in the center. I see my daughter cramming everything in her bags, that's the only reason I went with the thought. My bags, I purposely make some of my zips pull either direction. My ex-husband and I are ambidextrous, and my daughter, though left handed with some things, she uses her right for other things. I don't have any labels, yet. I will have them shortly. I never sign my artwork either! I will write a title and the date, and simply print my name on the back. I've had my art hijacked for gallery shows. I wanted to die. It was like my soul was on display. I didn't know they were out until I got a call from someone wanting to purchase a picture. I was confused, then horrified which picture! I guess that's why I don't have my labels on my sewing. I have cards that people can take if they want to place an order. I'm a fickle one, I guess.😊

@@ChristinesHomeAffairs Oh geeze... I've been following your measurements exactly. I haven't had time to sew for 2+ months as we had to move. I'm down to hanging a few pictures. I got my sewing area nearly set up, and my daughter piled her beads around it. If there's any free space, she piles. I put a smaller end table next to her "nest" on the couch... it's just piled taller. We're going to have a talk 😬😅

@@ChristinesHomeAffairs The bag looks great. I don't think it's a time saver though. It's interesting though. I would never have remember not to stitch the top. I would have had a bunch up mess. If the zip pocket was a little smaller, could the straps could go up a bit farther. Nah, it would be too small, it was a good size.

Agree, great bag shape but don’t like the zip tape finish. Would like to see this using your normal zip insertion. Oh and I’d love to see your heat press and how you stick the interfacing, when I iron mine it distorts.

I agree about hiding the edges of the zip. To me it’s a more “finished” look. Here’s my brain again thinking of changes. I’m not sure I can accurately describe what I’m seeing in my head, but here goes. I’d make the bag with a recessed zipper area, so think say a 2” strip of fabric where all layers a folded together and then stitched as a top stitch close to the edge, or not if you want it deeper, but I think this would require more pieces and more math. But basically the top would have a squared off kind of recessed area where the zipper sits a little below the top edge. On the back pocket, I’d not want the zipper to be wider than the straps, so I might make that smaller or move it to the inside front with the zipper and put an outside pocket that could hold the pen and maybe phone on the back. The technique you’re doing for the zipper is also used for making welted button holes and pockets. And maybe using that technique the zipper could also be hidden. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thank you for another fantastic video tutorial!

Thanks for your thoughts Barbara, and good point about the zip not being wider. Though if I bring the handles in even further, it may not work. I'm planning on doing this with the zip hidden hopefully this week😀

I’ve watched a lot of bag making videos and never seen that method. I wonder why but am guessing it’s because of the exposed zipper tape which I would not be happy with either. I wonder if you could bind them like a bound seam finish? I am hoping you come up with a solution. But the simplicity of the bag construction makes me want to give it a go.

I'm from the US (Texas). When you say cotton interfacing, do you mean woven? Is it more like cotton that goes between the layers of a quilt? Can you give a brand name and style so I can find an example? Thanks.
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs 14 күн бұрын
There are several brands of interfacings that you can use, and really any will be fine. The one I used is made of cotton rather than synthetic like what is used in dressmaking, but it has fusible product on one side. The cotton quilt batting is thicker, but that would give you a more padded bag😀

Newbie to the channel: do you not fear breaking a needle when sewing over the zipper teeth? I do not have an industrial Juki sewing machine and am terrifies of knocking my Bernina out of timing if I ran over zipper teeth. Thanks!!!

if you cut and fold back the flaps of lining fabric zip hole in the way you did, but put wrong side of zipper to wrong side of lining fabric stitch/tack in place. Then do the outer, fold back flaps and lay over the zip (and lining) it will be sandwiched between the lining and outer. then top stitch as normal around the zip on the outer fabric.
