The selvage is so wide on these fabrics that you would end up having to cut two half circle skirts. You would end up using way more fabric. Plus, I like the gathers at the top that you get from this method because it adds a little more volume.

So what measurements would I do if I wanted the back of the train longer and how many yards would I need

If your fabric is wider, then just leave the extra length in the back. If it’s not wide enough, then you’ll have to measure lengthwise. For example, if your fabric is only 58 inches wide but you want a 70” train, you will need 2 more yards and just turn it clockwise so the 70” length is running vertically and the width is running horizontally. Add an extra yard to make your godets a little wider too to accommodate the change in length from the side seams to the back. Hope that makes sense

TailoredByDom for some stuff it is but there are ways to work around not having a serger.

I don’t think a serger is ever necessary. Good shears and a zigzag stitch with stitch length at the lowest and needle position at the highest will mimic an overlock and prevent possible unraveling. I have a serger but it’s a headache so I rarely use it.
