Thank you so much for this video. I adapted your technique and used it for a 70"x76" cotton quilt already backed and quilted with minky. Since the three layers were already secured together (quilt top+batting+minky) I trimmed everything but left a 1" minky backing bigger than the quilt. Did the mitered corners as you demonstrated than flipped the minky to the front and secured with a zigzag all around. It worked so well, the mitered corners and the minky self-binding look great and give the quilt a luxurious feel. Per your suggestion I used a stretch needle, a walking foot, and clips+pins, which made the process fairly painless. This video was very useful and I learned something new. :)

I work for The Handmade Heifer! The best advice I have to ANYONE starting with minky is keep a vacumn handy! Every time you cut, vacumn up the fluff before it wisps into the air like dandelion seeds. But these fabrics are to die for soft! This is a great video!!! 🙂

Fantastic camera work when sewing!! I learned a lot today! It took away my skeptical attitude towards non cotton fabrics. (read: everything that is shifting everywhere when sewing, except where I want it to go ;-)...).

Hi! Shannon, I'm watching from Fort Worth, TX. So happy to be learning about cuddle fabric and Minky. I bought some for a cute baby blanket for my boss never having sewn Minky before. What a nightmare! I spent forever trying to cut it straight and then sewing it even on each side. It turned out just awful & wonky looking. I was so frustrated because I spent so much time on it. Your lessons have been extremely helpful. I'm going to start over and see if I can make this work! Thanks so much!
@barbaraflowers2361

Teresa, I found a solution for no more wonkiness along the edges. I was using the 90/14 stretch needle and the walking foot. I was securing the edges by pins, clips and Bohin double faced tape that I got on Etsy but was unable to get smooth side edges of the blanket. Now I secure the edges with the Bohin tape and ---- HAND BASTE at the edge with a moderately long running stitch. This keeps the fabric from moving. I then use a wide zig zag machine stitch over the edge and the result is great!!!! I wanted to pass this tip on to others. I tried first with contrasting thread that I pulled out later and the next time I just used the same color thread for the blanket and left it in.

Thank you so much for this video! I just finished a large--34 x 58--blanket for my grandson's birthday using the Luxe Cuddle Rose as the backing and regular minky for the top and it turned out so well. I was very intimidated at first because I didn't want to have miss-measured and ruined my fabric. Anyway, your video made the entire project rather simple and easy. So, thanks very much!!

Thank you Teresa for presenting such outstanding instructional videos. Could you present a video on how to attach appliqué pieces to Cuddle fabrics? For example, there’s a Shannon Fabrics free pattern for a monster pillow that has appliqué pieces to attach, plus I’ve seen some Cuddle blankets that have small appliqués. Im wondering if the appliqué can be temporarily attached with a fusible like Mistyfuse? And, I’m wondering if it’s better to sew around the appliqué with a satin stitch/tight zig zag stitch or a looser zig zag stitch? Thank you!

I bought a lux cuddle for the first time. I have never worked with it before. I of course went big. I had a super hard time figuring out how to cut a perfect square of this material. Plus, I had fuzzies all over the place? My question to anyone would be, how do your cut such a large piece of material "lux" in a perfect square? And how do you keep it from making such a mess. I had the hardest time! And when I went to check my corners, one corner was way off. I was so frustrated. this project has to be much easier, then what I had, yes?

@ShannonFabrics
@ShannonFabrics 3 жыл бұрын
This can be caused by a couple of things. Have you made your stitches longer? We recommend a 3.5-5mm stitch length. Can you reduce the presser foot pressure? Check out your machine's manual. Are you holding tension on the fabric as it goes under the foot? I keep a hand at the front and the back to help it feed through nicely. -teresa

Could you add a cotton batting for this self binding method?
@teresacoates2195
@teresacoates2195 4 жыл бұрын
yvonne trujillo Absolutely, you’d just want to quilt it a little so the batting doesn’t come apart.

First off...I really wish you guys sold your fabric on your site to the public 😫 I’ve been obsessed with your fabric for so long! I have eczema and very sensitive skin so soft fabric is best for me. I saw this video awhile back and decided I needed to try this! I went to my local fabric store and I found two fabrics that look super cute together. I really was hoping I’d find the unicorn fabric that has the stars. So I was a little bummed but that’s ok. I’ve been wanting to feel your minky fabrics since I discovered Shannon Fabrics. I got my black and white minky home and refolded it and found that it was by Shannon Fabrics. I can’t even tell you how excited I was. I’m even more excited for the project! Bye I’m new to sewing lol. So....In some tutorials they say to sew lines along the outside fabric. Do I need to do that if I’m making a 50x60 with the minky on the outside and cuddle on the out? I’m so excited for this project! I don’t know if the fabric changes the need for the extra stitching. It’s just for me and I’m gentle with my blankets.

PLEASE HELP! I’d super appreciate any help! I lined my backing fabric up I did my 3inch lines and then I did my 45degree lines (which took me forever because I’m making a 54x60 blanket 😫) and when I folded the edges over none of the lines matched up! Some were off a few centimeters and other off by quite a bit more. What do I need to do? I use the island in my kitchen which is huge! It also has grout lines. So I lined the fabric up against the long side of the island and one of the grout lines. Ugh! I need help! I really want to get this blanket made! I’m super excited about this project but I have to get those corners lined up first.

Which way do you cut it? Along stretch or no?
@ShannonFabrics
@ShannonFabrics 6 ай бұрын
It depends on what you are doing with the fabric. Usually you end up cutting it both directions. The stretch is widthwise. Please feel free to reach out to education@shannonfabrics.com for individual assistance. --teresa

Thanks Teresa, love all your videos. Can you please send a link for the tutorial for actually cutting the fabric for the self-binding blanket? I am working on one that should be about 65" X 48" and don't know how much minky for the back/binding piece. Thank you!

It is not treated with fire-retardant, so should not be used for sleepwear. Its safe to use for blankets, toys, etc. that will not be worn on them when sleeping. --teresa

will this method work using cotton for the frame?
@ShannonFabrics
@ShannonFabrics 4 жыл бұрын
No, this works for Cuddle minky because it is a knit and will not fray. If you use cotton for the frame, it will fray along the edges. You can absolutely use cotton for the inside piece (the raw edges are under the frame) and is a fun way to use panels and novelty prints. -teresa

What sewing machine do you recommend for sew minky blankets
@ShannonFabrics
@ShannonFabrics 2 жыл бұрын
Many machines will work well for sewing Cuddle minky. I use a Baby Lock Crescendo, which uses a digital dual feed. You'll want a machine that has a walking foot or dual feed, for sure. Check out your local dealer and try out a variety to see what you like best. --teresa
