I’ve found it easier for me to mark gathered fabric center front and maybe half again. I measure after the seaming and before the gathering to distribute the fullness evenly. Also remind people to keep track of the direction of the print so the peplum goes in the same direction as the bodice. Nice video.

When sewing slinky fabric like rayon I suggest ironing some stiff spray starch to the back of the fabric before starting. This helps it behave a bit better during construction, and it washes right out when you're ready to wear it!

For me it always seems easier to hem sleeves before attaching them to the blouse, so the fabric piece is still flat and you don't have to wrestle the whole garment around and sew in the tiny armhole. Some might also find the peplum easier to hem while flat. To hem the peplum first, it may be best to sew the front and back peplum pieces together into a large circle, so the hem will match at the seams. Then finish the top of the bodice separately, and add the peplum to the bodice as the last step.

@@MADEEveryday If you are going to do that, would you please include information how to wash them properly? I've heard of these things but don't really understand how they can be sanitary. Along the same lines, maybe you would put out a video on how to sew a washable pleated face mask? They might not be "medical filtration" quality, but at least they would send a message about not touching our faces and remembering to take the current crisis seriously. And it would be much nicer to see them made in pretty fabrics than scary medical white or blue.

I bought this pattern this weekend! I can't wait to make this top... But I'm kind of in love with the idea of turning it into a dress! By how much do you think I should increase the length of the rectangle piece? By pattern measurements, I'll be making the size 2, but I'm about 5'8''-5'9'' and I don't want it to be too short (ideal length for me would be to hit at the top of the knee). Any advice would be so appreciated! *extra question: I'm usually a store-bought size 4. Does it seem right that my measurements correspond to the size 2 in this pattern? Thank you!!

I have always heard it helps, when sewing gathered fabric to non-gathered fabric, to put the gathered side down towards the feed dogs so they can help grab and pull it along, while the non-gathered fabric glides under the presser foot.

Can you use cotton? Anything else is just too hot in the summer here.
@MADEEveryday4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes, you can use cotton. I have used it in the other "view/ A-Line" version of this shirt (from the pattern) But for the peplum I find that it looks best in a drapey fabric like rayon. It makes the peplum area less poofy, but that's just my personal preference! You can see more pics in the pattern listing. Scroll through here: shop.madeeveryday.com/products/summer-day-top

I looked thru some of the comments but didn’t look thru all..if making a dress would you just add more material length to the gathered part? I’m plus size and not sure if it would be too much fluff if that long- thank you!!
@MADEEveryday4 жыл бұрын
Hi Belinda, Yes...for a dress you would extend the length of the peplum. Depending on the type of fabric you're using, you can use less or more width for the peplum to get less bulk. Rayon should work great...but I made a dress version with some knit that was a bit too bulky, so I trimmed a lot of the width out. You can see that in my post here: www.madeeveryday.com/strawberry-summer-day-dress/

Yes, you could use that. I like using cotton for the more A-line version of this top (the other look included in the pattern). Hi Neva, you can use TENCEL® (trade name for generic fiber Lyocell). It's an “eco-friendly” counterpart to Rayon. Made from cellulose in wood pulp from tree-farmed trees, Solvent “amine oxide” used to digest the wood pulp; mainly recovered during the manufacturing process.
