Triangles quilts are absolutely beautiful, but they can also be intimidating. Getting your blocks to turn out the right size with all of your points in the right place can be a bit of a challenge.
That’s why we created the Triangle Masterclass, a collection of eight videos focusing on different types of triangle units that are commonly used in quilts.
In today's video we're making double pinwheels. We're starting out with two squares that are 1.25 inches larger than your finished block for the quarter square triangles and two squares that are 1 inch larger than your finished block for the half square triangle.
This technique creates four double pinwheels at a time, two sets that are mirror images of each other. That means for some patterns, you'll only be able to use half of the blocks because the quarter square triangle will only be in the right spot for half of the blocks.
But our pattern uses ALL of the double pinwheels, so you won't have any waste!
We cover the process in detail of making double pinwheels from squares, including how to check you're seam is correct BEFORE you cut the triangles apart, how trim to make sure your seams go right out into the corner and some common mistakes to look out for.
You can use each tutorial on its own to learn the techniques for whatever quilt you are working on. Or you can get our pattern Raspberry Sherbet which uses all of the techniques we cover in the series. It comes in four sizes, but we made the lap version for this tutorial series.
Raspberry Sherbet is fat quarter friendly and we have quilt kits using the fabrics I used while supplies last. You’ll get the same fat quarters I used and get to pick your own background to customize it to your tastes.
We also have created a Triangle Masterclass category on our website that has in-stock fat quarter bundles that would work for this quilt in the lap size. Just add background and you’ll be good to go.
I can’t wait to make this quilt with you!

Hi, I really love your video. Great directions and explanations. I’m sure I did something wrong, but I was trying to make a finished size of 3 1/2( for a different quilt pattern) . I used your formulas of adding 1 1/4 “to my fished size for 2 squares and 1” for the 3rd square. The blocks finished at 4”, before trimming. Yours were so much closer to the finished size. Any thoughts?

It was probably the seam allowance. Everyone's 1/4" seam allowance is slightly different and tiny differences can result in things like what you experienced. That's why we leave wiggle room to trim!

Sorry to ask...why do you say "FQ square" for size of your pieces to be sewn into HST's??? They look approx 5" square/or charm square size. As far as I know...FQ's are MUCH larger. Right?

Great question! The pattern is written for fat quarters and when we say "fat quarter square", we're differentiating it from the background pieces.

@@QuiltAddictsAnonymous I'm not sure that makes any sense. But, If you think it does, that's ok. As far as I know..."FQ square" is NOT a size. A charm square is usually 5" square (that's a size)!
