I've actually never sewn a side dart..what's the difference in fit compared to the normal bust darts? (by the way, i love love this pattern) :)

+Ducky Dubz Hi, A side dart serves exactly the same purpose as one positioned in the armscye (arm hole). Both help the shirt to conform more easily to the shape of the body. Some people find that side darts are much easier to adjust if you need to make alterations to the pattern than darts that begin higher up, and require muchless overall work to the pattern.
