Your tutorials are simply the most detailed and comprehensive. Such wonderful quality. I am so grateful to have found them! Thank you so much! I have been struggling with lining a bodice that has sleeves. I simply want to add lining to the bodice and not the sleeves. Please let me know how this is done so that it hides the sleeve seams in between the bodice and bodice-lining. Thank you XO
@MadetoSew8 жыл бұрын
Hi Nora, thank you for your lovely comment. I am so pleased you enjoy my tutorials. There are 2 methods you could do here: 1. Is to add interlining / underlining to your garment fabric. Basically you will use your lining fabric and position this against the main fabric once they have been cut out (WRONG sides together) before you begin sewing. Attach them with basting / tacking stitches or spray adhesive (if this works for your fabric). Then you will treat the bodice layers as one, this won't hide the seam allowances at the armhole but there are situations when this will work better than the method below. 2. Is to line the bodice as normal, attach it at the neck edge etc. Then you will have to send the armhole seam allowances from the garment in the opposite direction (towards the body of the garment). As I mention in the tutorial the general rule is to send sleeve seam allowances towards the sleeve but if you want them hidden they must go the other way. You will probably need to trim and clip them to make sure they lie flat and don't pull. By pushing these towards the body you will have a flatter sleeve cap, if you think this is too flat you could add some extra fabric such as silk organza as a sleeve head to fill out the top of the sleeve. Once you have the seam allowances towards the body of the garment you will press under the seam allowance of the lining, again this may need trimming and clipping and position the folded edge of the lining over the seam allowances to hide them. Hand stitch with a invisible slip stitch in position. Does this make sense? I think I will film a tutorial as it sounds like a great idea! Thank you for the inspiration. Best, Aneka x

thank you, this is the best video I've seen for sewing sleeves. I wondered why my pattern has two notches on one side of the sleeve, but no corresponding notches on the bodice as the pattern doesn't explain this; it's assumed knowledge, so thanks for mentioning this! I was also interested to note that you pin parallel to the seam rather than at right angles like most. It seems like you need less pins. I'll try this next time.

Hi Yasmin, you are so kind. Glad you like my videos. I would suggest maybe the Beginners Series to go through techniques that you don't know first? kzbin.info/aero/PLfxTlKMr7TsDHyZv7_dKMEzbNiuGV8Ilu And then dressmaking wise I have a class for a dress: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4SunqqvbN2eos0 and a skirt: kzbin.info/www/bejne/goTbooyDptN1eJo and on my website www.madetosew.com I teach pattern drafting. 😊

Thank you so much for all your tutorials, your teaching style is so easy to understand, it really feels like I'm in a classroom with a great teacher! I have a question regarding adding sleeves to patterns that don't have sleeves on them. Is it possible to borrow sleeves from other patterns that are similar and adding them to the sleeveless pattern? Is it possible that you might be able to address this in a future video? I can't seem to find much information about this, other than people saying it's easy to do, but not many directions on what to look for to avoid making mistakes. Thank you much x

Hi Jennifer, thank you for your lovely words, I am so pleased that you enjoy my tutorials. Thank you. I will be doing some videos on drafting sleeve patterns etc. with my free Copen pattern. These will hopefully help you. The first issue you have to think about is whether the pattern has the armhole in the correct place for a sleeve to be inserted? Sometimes sleeveless garments have the armhole cut in deeper for a nicer look. If the armhole can have a sleeve inserted then you will need to measure the sleeve and armhole (stitching lines) to look at the difference, to see whether they can work together. In my opinion the sleeve can have up to 1" (2.5cm) of extra room (ease) than the armhole (this large amount of ease is often seen in the big four pattern companies). However I prefer a smaller amount of ease say 3/8" - 1/2" (1cm). Even if you get the size correct you may still have some shaping issues, you could try and test in calico? It might be easier to draft the sleeve from scratch to fit the new bodice? Aneka x

Made to Sew Thank you o much Aneka, your explanation is so helpful. I was considering changing out the short sleeve variation on Simplicity 1418 for an elbow length one. I wasn't sure if changing out the sleeve would be possible. Or even somehow elongating the sleeve they've provided? I'm definitely going to watch out for your video on drafting, very interested in that. And combined with your easy to understand teaching method, should be very informative, thank you!

I would try and lengthen the current sleeve, then the cap shape will work with the armhole. Hope this helps. Thank you, Aneka
